Title: DAVES2ND.WAD
Filename: levels/doom/d-f/daves2nd.zip
Size: 58.38 KB
Date: 10/18/94
Author: Dave Cameron
Description: This is my second WAD, hence the catchy title. It's smaller than I would have liked, but most of the construction was done in DEU 5 and I started running out of RAM. It's subsequently been tidied-up in V5.2. I've tried to set it up as an alternative to E1M1 that can be played through, i.e. you won't start E1M2 with any advantages over the original in terms of usable weapons etc.

Finalist in PC Zone Magazine WAD Contest!
Credits: Dawn, Ross and Michael for playtesting
Base: New level from scratch
Build time: SUCH a long time Editor(s) used DEU 5/5.2, BSP 1/1.2
Editor(s) used: DEU 5/5.2, BSP 1/1.2
Bugs: Occasionally bombs out in the pit room near the end, too much going on perhaps?

Well, it's not bad, making allowances for age. It kept me amused for fifteen minutes, which is more than can be said for many other vices. The bit with the holes near the end is irritating and unintuitive (the yellow key is hidden behind a little piece of wall). As the other reviewer notes it seems very disjointed. The alcoves in the room with the goat head looked nice in JDoom, though. It would be interesting to know who won the PC Zone WAD contest.x

I'm very indecisive. On the one hand, this level has a lot going for it.. there are some clever traps and - for its time - some fairly interesting architecture. On the other hand, although individual areas are sometimes good, the map as a whole feels randomly thrown together. This, along with the feeling of not knowing (nor caring) what to do to proceed, the at times completely random texturing, the grotesque bugs and some stupid annoyances, brings down the grade. --1/5x
