Review - Sacha
Everyone who has ever downloaded wads from cdrom.com has surely come across wads known as "newby" wads. These are, more or less, highly crappy wads and usually someone's first attempt at wad designing. However, Dimiter Georgiev, has broken this trend of crap first-release wads with 'My First Attempts'.

Despite the amateurish sounding name, these levels are far from amateur in style and design. My First Attempts is a collection of 4 levels, all of which are well designed and are all pretty good looking. According to Dimiter, these levels took over a year to make, and in some instances it really shows. There are some highly original ideas in these levels including a couple of upside down rooms, complete with upside down textures (!).

However, there are also some particularly annoying parts as well. There are certain traps that you have no way of getting out of, and sometimes you feel as though the author might have been a little too clever for his own good. Despite this the monsters are well placed, and there are plenty of them on each level. There are also a multitude of traps relying on monsters popping out from previously closed doors. Needless to say, the watching ones back is an essential skill in playing these levels.

The difficulty settings have been fully implemented, although these levels are really pretty tough even on HMP. UV is defintely for those elite doomers among us, with plenty of 'bigger' monsters springing out of the many aforementioned traps. Saving is essential on these levels, as is ammo conservation, especially as you never know what is around the next corner.

These levels should appeal to the vast majority of doomers. There are some minor puzzle elements in some of the levels, as well as plenty of action. The difficulty settings should also make these levels a challenge, even for some of the most seasoned doomers. As a first release wad, My First Attempts is really something pretty special. It breaks away from the traditional crappy first wad, and proves that if enough effort is put into designing some levels they really can be pretty good.

    Overall: 8/10
