Review - Mike
Lately the author of this level has been making levels that are big, bad, and use the Gothic texture .wad, but now he has made something different. How? Well, this time around he made it small enough to work even on the normal doom2 engine, plus it uses only regular Doom2 textures. Never have I seen a level with regular Doom2 textures have an excellent and consistent gothic feel to it.

You start out with a double barrel close-by with 4 imps and 2 hell knights surrounding you. I had a lot of trouble getting out of this one, but common sense took me over and I found some ammo were I was supposed to go =) Anyway, once you get through that you go down a small tight hallway with more hell knights, until you finally stumble into a huge outdoor area which is nicely detailed, yet it still doesn’t give doom2 a hard time at all! Well done I must say.

The good things about this level is…well….just about everything! The level provided an incredibly hard, but fair challenge that stayed constant throughout the level. The monsters couldn’t have been placed better, and there were a lot of nice surpises, including a hell knight that sneaks up behind you. Very nice touch indeed. The lighting was excellently done. Probably one of the best, if not best, lighting I have ever seen that works on the doom2 engine, and the textures were excellently done, especially for only doom2 textures. There were also some nice special effects as well, such as…Well you can find out yourself.

There were a few bad things in the level though. One is that there are only to my knowledge two weapons in the entire level, the super shotgun and the chaingun. With barely no chaingun ammo at all, you were pretty much stuck with the super shotgun the whole time, which isn’t too bad, but the level could have had a little more variety in the weapons department. Another thing that lacked was health. The level was so freakin hard cause it had tough monsters that are tough to dodge and there were only 3 stimpacks that I can think of from the top of my head. At least there are lower skill levels for the single player impared =)

To sum it up, even though there could have been more weapon variety, and the health was a little low, this level is just about perfect compared to today’s standard of modern doom2 maps, and beyond for a map that works with the original engine. This is definitely a level that will be looked upon by people that want to learn how to edit levels. A must download, especially with the small size that comes with it.
