| Jagged
Edges is a rather nice and well balanced level. Utilising the ever popular
Gothictx textures, Jagged Edges unsurprisingly looks rather professional.
The medieval gothic theme found thoughtout the level is consistent, achieved
not only by the Gothic textures, but also by the meticulously detailed
architecture found throughtout the level.
Upon starting the level its not hard to arrive at the conclusion that the author who made this level is an expert level maker. If you look hard enough when you play, you'll see what I mean. Its all those small things that most other authors leave out or simply forget, that this author includes in his work. Things like simple light bricks, pillars jutting out from walls and even minor elevation changes to the ground and ceiling, depending on whether they're there or not, are what separates a good wad from a great one. This might sound silly and downright obvious, but believe me this is a pitfall which many authors have fell into. Corresponding with the professionalism of the level, is the placement of monsters and the availability of equipment and weapons. The amount of monsters found in UV is definitely not excessive. In fact, in some areas you get the feeling that the place is deserted. For me, it made the level all the more atmospheric. Pity their was no new music to supplement this. The easier difficulty settings provide the player with less monsters to deal with, as well as weaker ones to replace their tougher counterparts. As far as weapons and ammo are concerned, you do get enough ammo on UV, and more than enough on the easier difficulty settings. You are denied however, the plasma gun and the BFG weapon, which in my opinion is good. The level, when you look around, though it may have many, many sectors, isn't all that big as far as area is concerned. When you have a small level like this the plasma weapons should be left out, unless its an end level for a TC. And besides the plasma weapons fit in more with futuristic city and space type levels, and not medieval gothic ones. I recommend this level for any potential level makers to look at. It does show the kind of standard today in the Doom community. Highs : Consistent texture theme. Meticulous architecture detail. Not too many monsters. Adequate weapons and enough ammo. Deadly traps, especially if you have sound turned off. Nice lighting. Lows : The level lacks something special, ie airfield, multi-level bridge, railway network, light posts, shops, just to name a few which I've seen, to distinguish it from the horde of other levels. After all... all things considered, the level is only of above average quality when compared to nowaday standards. Its a great level, but it doesn't shock. |
