Before playing Derek's Jägermörder I knew him as the guy with the brown homepage with all those texture packs...  but he's definitely an accomplished level designer, who is currently working on more projects than anyone else on the planet :-)

Three years of studying German and I'm still not sure how to pronounce Jägermörder, thankfully it's much easier to play.  When you first load the level up and have a look at your surroundings you can just tell it's going to be a kick arse level, and indeed it is.

There is a nice short storyline to read if for some reason you need any motivation to kill all those pesky Doom monsters - although, it will give the level's exit meaning.

I don't think I've ever seen a wad which captures the entire Doom 2 theme so well, but, there aren't really any Doom 2 levels as good as this one.  Texture use, alignment, lighting is all top notch.  Small details like acid flowing down a drain and half closed entry gates are the icing on the cake.

After getting through the blue key door and killing a couple of Hell Knights I thought Derek may have made the level far too easy.  But luckily with some clever monster placement and teleportation some skill was required.  Keep close to the Pain Elemental when you see him (or he sees you) and you'll be fine.  There is also a sneaky arch-vile to watch out for.  At first you can only hear him, and I never did work out where he came from.

If you do have troub le on UV go to the lower skill levels where you can find some more health and armour, and even if you just stood there firing shells into the wall you probably wouldn't run out...

There's a new music track thrown in by midi superstar Mark Klem, but I didn't have the music on... hehe. The only new graphics in the level would be the changed sky texture - straight from Doom's first episode.

My only complaint would be that Derek made Jägermörder rely on a port that supports boom, when the only Boom effect I can remember was a bit of undernukage - might have been better to allow the level to run using doom2.exe?? Jägermörder is an instant classic in my opinion. It was a featured pick on Ricrob's, and received 5/5 at Colin Philips Doom underground, now I'm giving it a perfect score since I can't find anything wrong with it. Download it now, and then start harassing Derek for Jägermörder 2!!
