Prower's community project... heard of it?? Well, it was supposedly going to be the
megawad that would get done... yeah right. Anyway, Tomi Rajala knows a dead project
when he sees one, and has decided to release the level he made for it.
The level has a hi-tech/base theme, and right from the start you're plunged into the
action. Grab that shotgun and kick some arse, marine!! Most of the time the base
will have you feeling a little cramped - no time to be claustrophobic.
With an extremely linear design, you have to stick to the path that the author has set you.
Do what your told by pressing all the right switches and before you know it you'll have the
first key and be well on your way. Omega 01 is a small level, so enjoy it while it lasts.
There are a nice variety of fights to be had - the most original area being the extremely
quick moving conveyor belt that you will have to fight on. It was almost humourous to see
a baron sliding down the conveyor, being on top of you before you can react. One room at
first may seem a little tough, but there are some handy windows/slits you can make use of.
As the level is so short, weapons seem to be handed out quite often. The Rocket Launcher being
the most powerful weapon - I am not sure why it was put in since you definitely do not
need it. Tomi has packed 90 monsters into the level on UV, which a decent amount of them
teleporting in, or appearing behind trap doors. You couldn't really say the level has any
dull moments because of this.
Texture use is well done, and the lighting is even better. Quite impressive considering
the build time of 'two days'. Omega 01 isn't going to provide you with an original
Doom experience, or even keep you playing for that long (5-6 minutes maybe). But it's
still a nice, small, and fun Boom level.
