Review #1:
"The wad is short, centralized, and tough. Unless you're a
DOOM god, UV should pose a good challenge for most." On the
contrary, I found this level to be a breeze. Except for the
occasional arch-vile, there is hardly any problem getting places in
this level. You just have to do a lot of hiding behind corners to
clear scenes up but that is it. It was refreshing to play a level
intended for doom gods instead of the amateur player.
Ammo and monster placement was fairly poor. Especially the ammo and
powerups. Monsters weren't too bad, but the rooms with 4 boxes of
shells, 4 boxes of rockets, 4 boxes of bullets and 4 cell packs made
dealing with them far too easy.
Architecture and texturing were extremely bad. With the exception of
the start room, which I have to admit was fairly well done, the level
seems like a first or second attempt at a map. Lots of bright rooms
with no light sources, dark hallways with lights, skin textures
scrolling into metal walls, some oddly impassable lines and extreme
lack of detail in general.
Overall, the only redeeming quality here is the playability. The
layout of the map is classic, and could have been really cool if done
by somebody who knew what they were doing. This level is OK for a
quick challenge, but nothing else.
Overall: 3.5/10

Review #2:
In ultra Violence mode, you start off in a room full of imps. Act
really quickly, as you only have a short time to grab the shotgun to
your left before the imps flood you. Not that it will do you any
good, as there are so many, the only way to escape is to run away and
shoot at them. Outside, rooms full of stronger enemies await you.
It's ridiculous. I mean, does the guy who made this actually expect
you to beat it!? On the other hand, it is a refreshing change from
the sickeningly easy wads some people make...
Anyway, if you cheat, you can have some real fun. Using the Zdoom
Notarget cheat you can shoot one monster, then run behind a different
monster. When one shoots at you and hits the other, they will fight
it out. In fact, considering how few weapons lie around, your only
chance is to get monsters to fight. The level is very very basic,
it's just that he has it set up so anything that looks like it would
help you ends up not being worth it. Like when you get the super
shotgun, a wall opens up and some mancabuses come to get you. Or when
you find and use the blue key, cacodemons and pain elementals
teleport in to "Play" with you.
Personally, I think that if the guy was going for lots of monsters,
he should have included a room full of cyberdemons and spider-minds :-)
For actual gameplay, it sucks, as there is not much you can even
survive to do, but for fooling around with cheats, it is a 12/10,
because it is fun to get monsters fighting!!

Comment - Lack of actual gameplay makes it suffer, but the monster
positioning makes it fun to get them fighting.
Last Remarks - Should have more than one player start. As this
would make a great deathmatch/co-op level to play in. |
