Misc. Author Info: author's "first and last megawad".

The World Of Deth is a recently released megawad for Doom2, featuring the usual 30 maps and 2 secret levels.

This was begun in '96 and it shows. There are many of those "typical newbie" downfalls in the maps (i.e. water that causes major health damage, nukage that doesnt, etc.) but not enough that it becomes a major pain. The levels do get better as the game moves on, but even at best, the most I would give any map's overall rating is a 3. Nothing in these maps hasn't been seen millions of times before, and usually carried out much better. "Detail" is often composed of multiple lines of 4-sided pillars and large staircases. The level themes do vary but most are all-brown wood/metal combos with some green and gray thrown in for good measure.

The first few maps were fairly difficult for me, and I was under the impression that this might be the next "Hell Revealed" in terms of difficulty after coming across a Baron of Hell in the second room of map01, but after map03 I was quickly proven wrong. It would appear the author didn't take into account the ammo your enemies drop after being killed. (That, or he decided only the first few maps needed to be hard.) The number of enemies increases sufficiently as the maps progress, but there isn't much difference between taking on 100 imps with 50 rockets and 10 imps with 70 bullets in terms of challenge, so the increase in monsters goes hand in hand with the increase in available ammo and they basically cancel eachother out.

What all this means is that the gameplay gets extremely reduntant extremely fast. But it's an OK way to kill a dull weekend, provided the boredom of playing more than 4 maps at a time doesn't kill you first.

Rating 2.5/10
