| Hellish doesn't
actually live up to its name until you get right to the end of this rather
long and somewhat laborious level. It's clear that the author of this level
has tried to create something different, and well, it hasn't really worked.
One of the main reasons for this is that there are a majority of perplexing
texture choices. There are numerous examples of doors that, well, look nothing like a door. The only reason you know that it could be a door is that the texture is totally different from everything around it. On the bright side, however, there are very few misaligned textures. Another factor that contributes to this level not being very good, is the fact that it isn't really that much fun to play. There are a few areas where basically there are no monsters, and then there are areas which are ridiculous because they have too many monsters (e.g. - the winding stairs crammed with lost souls). The DB is hidden in an area at the start, which you have to backtrack to find. If you don't manage to find it, then you are in for a long, slow grind with many of the monsters. I also found the ending rather irritating. A very long and very slow elevator ride takes you into a pit where you fight it out against everyone's favourite "big mutha", the good ol' cyber. One problem, the pit is pitch black, and if you don't get those light amp. goggles quick, you're toast !! The exit door out of this room is also hidden, with no visible markings (apart from on the map), which made it rather annoying. All in all, Hellish does have its good parts. However, they tend to be outweighed and overwhelmed by its irritating and plain bad bits. Basically, this wad would be good for beginners to practice on, but hard-core doomers might be better off finding something else. |
