His Inferno series contains nine levels for Ultimate Doom which took approximately
two years to create and are a masterpiece of level designing. They
cater for those of you who like to explore the surrounds and marvel at
the architecture
(including 3D bridges). The buildings and layout are second to none and do a great job of setting the moody atmosphere which continues throughout the episode. As Chris says... "I am a very visual person, and these levels reflect that. There is a lot of detail and lovingly crafted atmosphere, sometimes to the point that it eclipses pure lightning-response action. Not that there isn't anything to maim, but if you all you desire to do is blow the living hell out of animated imps, then you may wish to look elsewhere (or at least skip to the second level of the episode). However, if you appreciate looking at your surroundings and thinking that the level could be a real place...well, I believe that I have achieved that, and rather admirably in certain places." In terms of difficulty, its actually quite easy when it comes to your health, but it takes a lot of wandering and head scratching to reach the end. The texture use is perfect, as nothing seems out of place, and any texture misalignment was unnoticable. Lighting was of a high standard, but not 'the' best. Chris has a remarkable ability to make torches, corpses etc significantly add to the level's appearance. I didn't notice the 'missing' monsters, but I would have liked the Double-barrel to take out the odd Baron of Hell. This wad is another example of Ultimate Doom's prowess when it comes to 'the best' levels. I couldn't resist in awarding the magical 10/10, well done Chris! |
