| Kurt Kesler's
Khills
2 has quality written all over it. Set in his trademark 'base'
theme, Kurt has produced in quick time, a masterpiece.
3D Bridges are exploited in this level, and they're everywhere. They have been used extremely well, and in such a way that they fit in with the overall setting. Despite the fact that Kurt was not the first to discover 3D bridges, he is the first to use them in an ID Software type proffesional way. This wad could be downloaded just as a lesson on how to create 3D bridges... But not only is it a 'complete guide to 3D bridges', it is also a guide to texture use, monster placement, and level progression. Kurt has a nack for texture use. Nothing ever seems out of place, and all areas of the base gel together. Monsters are extremely well placed, and Kurt know's all the triicks in regard to making monsters appear out of nowhere. Keep an eye out for the 'magically appearing' arachnotrons too. Despite the fact that Khills 2 is quite a linear level, it does a good job of disguising this through the use of a clever starting position. Every wad has its faults right? True, and unfortunately KHills 2 does have a few negatives that drag it down from a perfect 10 score. Firstly, the difficulty levels aren't integrated enough. I found little difference between Ultra Violence and I'm too young to die. There were differences, such as the absence of the soul sphere, and a few more monsters etc.. But not enough to make a distinct difference between the lower and higher difficulties. Becuase of this, I don't think it catered for different levels of Doom players. The second annoyance, or to some, a bonus, was the size of the level. Too short in my opinion. The level took under or around 5 minutes most of the time. As I said, some Doomers may like it's shortness, but I think that at least two keys should have been utilised. And as a final rant, I was annoyed at the lack of Boom only features. This is not exacltly Kurt's fault, as he was almost extorted into a non Boom level. But with conveyor belts, silent teleports, and perhaps in some areas, undernukage, K Hills 2 could have become the *perfect* level. If you haven't played this level yet, you are missing out on a fantastic wad. And if you want to learn what a good wad is, and how to make one, here is your chance to see the best in action. |
