Dammit is a set of three levels which were released ages ago for Doom 2.
However, the author, Harq, has decided that it is time to update them with
some of Boom's new features and re-release them as Boom only levels. It's
probably not a bad decision in the end...
Despite being a set of three levels, for I couldn't get the third level to work due to a missing texture which Boom can't find, so my review will have to be based on the first two. Firstly, let me say that this level contains some pretty cool effects, not all of them to do with Boom, however. There are plenty of spiffy lighting effects (ie - lighting that seems to "blend"), and also some pretty cool effects with the switches. There are also the Boom only effects, which I'm glad to say have been used judiciously (ie - to create lakes that actually flow). The two levels that I was able to play all have a certain non-linearity associated with them, which is definitely a good thing. For instance, the first level can be finished in three different ways by following three different paths that lead to the same switch. The second level isn't quite as non-linear, but at least you have some choices as to which way you can go. On the same note, the levels are all pretty well designed and there are some pretty good architectural effects in each. The textures on this level constitute some of the best, and worst parts. In some parts there are very strange texture choices which just don't seem to fit in with the rest of the level. Maybe it's just me, but some of the textures looked quite out of place. The levels are quite difficult and this is compounded by the fact that the difficulty settings are not implemented. However, monster placement in most instances is justified, even if it seems like there are too many of them, at times. All in all, these levels are pretty fun to play and the lack of linearity means that you can keep coming back to them in order to find new ways to finish them. Also due to the inherent difficulty it will take you a while to finish each level. This is probably a wad that newbies should pass on, but for those who like their levels a little tougher (and some pretty scenic bits) this should provide an adequate challenge... |
