Named after a British composer's orchestral suite, this wad is a variation
on a long standing theme -the "marble" theme. The walls and floors are
textured very similar to some levels of Doom I, with the marble green walls
and dirty floors and ceilings.
The fact that this theme has been done to death does not detract from this wad's appeal, infact it sort of adds to it -it's like visiting an old friend. I found myself comparing it to original Doom I levels and I think that this wad could easily have made it into a commercial release, perhaps with a little minor tweaking. The actual point of the wad is to recapture the Abdelazer gun, represented by the BFG. The rooms are complex and there are many trigger traps that can easily fool the beginner. I played this wad on Ultra Violence, and it took me about 45 minutes. A better player could probably complete it within 20 minutes, but I had go back through certain parts of the level; it certainly does not play linear. I also liked it's catwalk about 1/5th of the way through the level and some of the secret areas were pretty well thought out. There was not any silly secrets, such as a plasma rifle as soon as you start, all the secrets were as metered out as the rest of the level. The weapons placement is reasonable, taking you up the weapons as you progress through the level. You know you have completed a 'sub-section' of the wad, everytime you have obtained that higher weapon. Health is also metered out in reasonable doses, even the impulsive player can regain some health if they play hard enough. Enemy placement is extremely good, as soon as you fully enter the main arena part of the level you are greeted by a barrage of imps, firing at you from a distance. The fact that the wad is designed for single player really does show. It also shows that the author spent alot of time thinking the level out. The build time of April - June 1998, shows how long the author spent getting this level to it's perfection. The only thing that probably could have been changed is it's lack of support for multiplayer, co-op design would have been cool, deathmatch would probably have been unnecessary -there are plenty of decent DM wads out there already. All in all, I give this wad my personal 8/10. |
