| Dead Soul,
by Dave Johnson, is specifically designed for co-op (or so the text file
says). However, despite that fact, this wad is not restrained to simply
co-op play. It also makes for a rather enjoyable single player wad as well.
The name of the wad is based around the music that it uses (Nine Inch Nails music, to be precise) and has nothing to do with lots of lost souls, or anything like that. However, not only has the music changed for this level, but the majority of weapon sounds have also changed. The SB shotgun has changed, along with the plasma rifle, chaingun, pistol and the rocket launcher (which has a cool new firing sound). Dead Soul is also a very well designed level. There are some classic Doom elements that are used (ie - monsters rising out of holes in the ground), and a big outdoor area that makes for some hectic fighting (especially on UV). The architecture is generally pretty good and the texutres are used wisely, and there doesn't seem to be many which are out of place. One surprising aspect of Dead Soul is that the difficulty settings are well implemented. It is rare these days to find someone who bothers to take the time to implement difficulty settings well, if at all. The level should be able to be completed by everyone on the easiest difficulty setting, where as UV is probably more suited to two players (or Doom Gods who want to go it alone). When playing Doom, there is almost nothing as annoying as having a level overloaded with traps so that there is always something sniping at you from behind. Thankfully, traps are few and far between in this level and the monsters are well placed, which makes the level enjoyable to play. The monster difficulty starts off low, and increases as the level progresses, which is always a good sign. Overall, Dead Soul, is a wad which should please the majority of Doomers out there. If you like it rough, then play it on UV. If you are a little more conservative (or perhaps scared) try it on one of the lower difficulty levels. Co-op players should also find this map enjoyable and because of its design, running miles for weapons when you die is not a problem. In fact it is one of the more enjoyable co-op maps I have played... |
