Review - David
Crestfallen is a very interesting wad, it plays extremely tight and difficult. As soon as I started this wad, I put Ultra Violence on -I shouldn't have, as I was soon massacred by a group of about 6-8 imps. I soon worked down to a more managable difficulty (Hurt Me Plenty) and set about trying to survive. Any Doom God who can complete all of DoomII within an hour on ultra v may want to take notice of this wad -it certainly is a challenge and would make for extremely good demo recordings.

The Weapons placement is reasonable, taking you right up to the Plasma rifle, which is a real preferable item to have on this wad. You are given Berserk straight away, which is a real boon, as it's excellent for making those Imps turn into red paste.

The enemy placement is pretty good, and you soon learn to be quick on the trigger. But trigger happy playing will land you in trouble, so be careful not to blast all your ammo away. Teleportation also rears it's fearsome face, with enemies following you through gates to tear you into shreds.

Health placement is sparse, but I get the feeling that this was done to keep the player on his/her toes. A supercharge about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through the level replenishes you to live another day, if you can hold out long enough you won't be disappointed.

The architecture of the wad is amazing -it's what really makes it come alive. My friend and fellow Team Insanity member, Simon Varszeghy, was on the playtesting team for this wad and I remember him saying that the wad's architecture was Quakelike in places. He wasn't wrong. If you like Quake, you'll love Crestfallen's Quake similarities. If you don't like Quake then you'll love the wad anyway, because it uses original doom textures in extremely clever ways. There is also a series of switches, and pressing these is helpful but also summons forth more hordes to smash you down.

The playability of the wad is extremely good, it is short but fun -a drag through the mud but not for too long. If the wad was longer, I think it would have lost it's appeal -personally I like tough wads, but not when I have to spend hours and hours trying to complete them, that just drives me crazy.

The first point that lets this wad down is that it can be a little too hard -but difficulties are implented and so it is just a matter of learning that there are other difficulties besides Ultra V. The second (and only other) point that lets this wad down is it's lack of multiplayer starts, the next time I am playing serial link DoomII I will probably stick a load of deathmatch starts in Crestfallen myself and frag away -I think this level would be excellent on deathmatch!

So I recommend that all doom players play this wad, and all authors play it and gain insight from it's excellent architecture.
