must say that when I heard I was reviewing the Batman TC demo, I was less
than impressed. Not being a big fan of either the comics or the cartoon
series, I thought that this TC would have absolutely nothing to even moderately
excite me. Boy, was I WRONG...
If this demo version is any indication of things to come, then the folks working on this TC are on a sure fire winner. Firstly, there are many new enemies. None of them are of the alien kind, which is a good thing, because that is not what this TC is about. The new foes include a couple of big "slum lord" kind of dudes, and plenty of tall, skinny blokes with guns. All are impressively drawn, and fit in well with the overall theme. New weapons are on offer, and although you don't see a lot of them in this demo version, using IDKFA gives you some idea of what to expect. You start off with some "bat boomerang" thingies, which replace the pistol. Basically, you throw then at the baddies and watch them fall in agony. Also on offer in the demo version, are smoke bombs (I assume that is what they are meant to be) which replace the rocket launcher. The level design of the 3 levels is what really impressed me. Hundreds of new textures have been created and implemented in these levels. They all look superb and, once again, fit in well with the Batman theme. The first level actually looks like Gotham city, and is pretty well designed. The second level is more of an intermission, where you are standing inside the Batcave. Wander over to the Bat mobile, and you're onto the next level. Not only does this look pretty cool, but I thought it was also a good idea. The third level is another city level (with a touch of country) and has plenty of stuff for you to explore. I was particularly impressed with the train section in the first level. The train looks cool, and the designers have implemented ambient sounds of a moving train, once you jump on board. Not only that, but when you get off the train, you are at a different station !! Other cool ideas that have been implemented include chairs that can be destroyed, and cars which you can actually walk around and see all the angles. Pretty impressive stuff !! Overall, this TC is looking the goods. If the designers can keep up this kind of standard, then this TC should become an instant hit within the Doom community. I did find one strange thing within this TC, however. When you get up close to the enemies, Batman looks like he is about 3 feet tall. It appears like you are staring straight at the enemies waist line. This is something that I think the guys working on this project need to take into account before the full release comes out. Despite that minor gripe, however, this demo version is a must download for any Batman fan. It won't offer you hours and hours of playing, but I think you will all be impressed by it... |
