| When
I first started to play this wad I found many things similar to the original
Doom and not Doom2, but most people these days play Doom2 and not the original
so I can see why the author chose to design it for Doom2. I always
start out playing at Ultraviolence because I love the challenge...but in
this case there was a slight disappointment because in a few of the levels
I started I would find little or no monsters to challenge me, except for
the one level that had a Cyberdemon right smack dab in the middle of the
arena! There was one level that you started out and then you hit
the booby-trapped switch and bam!...Hell Knights! That particular
level had some good lighting to it. Level design was pretty simple
and basic but you could tell the author just didn't slap the levels together
and actually gave it some thought. The author said there were new
graphics but they were very sparse. The new music was okay and there
was a couple of tunes I actually enjoyed. Sounds were okay, but alot
of them were rips from Duke Nukem and Heretic\Hexen, the BFG startup sound
was pretty cool. The usage of textures throughout the 10 levels had
alot to be desired, texture alignment was way off which really hurt my
eyes at times, but I've seen worse. Numerous textures just ran into
each other with no break in between them, a little more attention to detail
in these levels could have added some extra depth and gave the levels a
much better feel. What really is gonna give this set of levels a
low score is the major bug in map 7, this only happens if you move forward
into the arena, then hop on the lifts to get out, go hit the switches in
the four corners and then go to the center arena and you can see the Spider
Mastermind and when you drop into the area major HOM, probably from a bad
switch Make sure that before you release a set of levels that you playtest
them extensively. I've included a screenshot of this for your enjoyment.
Highs: Decent playability and some good usage of lighting. Lows: Bad texture alignment (x & y offsets) and skill settings not properly utilized. Not enough playtesting to find bugs. Final Note: If you just like playing some good old fashioned Doom then this is for you. If you want more of a challenge then look to other levels. |
