| "YOU
HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY SELECTED TO TERMINATE THE OVERLORD ROMERO...YOUR MISSION
BEGINS WITHIN A SPACE POD WHERE YOUR TARGET, ACCORDING TO OUR CONTACTS,
AWAITS YOU BEHIND THREE SEALED DOORS...IT IS HERE YOU WILL ALSO FIND THE
PORTAL THAT WILL TAKE YOU TO A LARGE COURTYARD WHICH CONTAINS ACCESS TO
THE THREE KEYS THAT WILL OPEN THE SEALED DOORS."
More levels had this theme, but most weren't as interesting as this level, Mediator. The author paid very much attention to detail, gameplay and made sure the level wasn't a "thirteen in a dozen" level. This level is exciting from beginning to end and is a great example of non-linearity. Most places have to be visited more than once, with new monsters showing up every time. The level isn't big at all, but finding the exit isn't easy for a level this size. People who liked Eternal Doom, will definitely like this Mediator wad. Health, ammo and monsters are well balanced and skill levels are implemented, to make sure every Doomer finds a good challenge. Some monsters come quite unexpected, but you will always be able to kill them, if you picked up enough ammo and weapons. No extreme monsters in this level, just enough to make it possible to reach the exit alive. There are some nice tricks, like monsters that rise from beneath the floor, teleporting monsters and of course the Romero head at the end. Nothing very special, but these tricks help to make this level great to play. There is new music and some new sounds in the wad. Some of the sounds become a bit annoying after a while, but that's the problem with most new sounds in wads. Only one error can be found in the level, a wall texture that should be transparant, somewhere in the central courtyard. Most people won't even notice it, so it's no big deal. Conclusion: this level is one of the best of 1998, so please download it now! |
