| It's
everyone's nightmare to have Doom monsters running rampant throughout their
house. Well, some doomers may actually like it, but you can see what
it might be like, with Steve Noonan's Boom House of Doom.
The thought of a doom level based inside and around a house, isn't very gameplay friendly in my opinion. But Steve has somehow kept the gameplay intact as Boom House of Doom is a thrill to play. The reason this level is so successful is its monster placement. For starters, there are almost 200 monsters in the level, which is a lot of monsters in one house!! In order to prolong the action the monsters are split into two waves. That is, the initial hordes which have already invaded the house. And then, after finding the yellow key another onslaught begins. Monsters teleport into every area that has already been cleared out, and the action starts again. The architecture of the house is nothing special. But it is more than adequate with chairs, tables, verandahs, and even a stove. There is a new wall paper texture which is annoyingingly plain to the eye. But you don't get much time to stand still in this level. This version is apparently release 7, which is a lot of releases in anyone's book. This new version has some neat Boom features including the "lame attempt at a car". Those are Steve's words, and at least he is honest. There is a car sprite that scrolls repeatedly across the screen, and only really looks good from a distance. Another Boom feature, which this time is used effectively is the silent teleporter linedef. It unknowingly teleports the player so that the house can be two storied. Although the teleport is definitely noticable, it's still a great part of the level. A final warning, this level is very hard on Ultra Violence. Despite the first 6 weapons being available almost right from the start, it's still a challenge. The problem is that you will have used up all the health after the first wave, and there will be none for the second. Pretend it's your own house and kick those bastards out!! |
