| The
'In Most Corpses' by Martin Firberg is meant to be the sequel his earlier
two level wad, UAC Corporation. Although I have not played UAC Corporation
for a long time, my memories of it do not match well with this newer level.
The original levels were far too easy on UV, but this time it seems Martin has overcompensated with too many monsters (you just can't win can you?) as UV is very hard, perhaps too hard. Hurt Me Plenty appears to be perfect for the average Doomer, but definitely too easy for the Doom Gods out there. The lower difficulty levels are embarrassingly easy - I distinictively remember one trap that opened to reveal....wait for it... nothing at all. The quality of the architecture is quite inconsistent, varying from average to excellent. Once you reach the sewer section on the level you do catch a glimpse of Martin's level desgining talent. The sewer tunnels, and the varying floor heights, manage to portray a 3D feeling, which in my view was the highlight of the level. Unfortunately, the initial stages of the level are below par in comparison to Martin's past work. The detail in UAC Corporation is nowhere to be found this time which is a real pity. UAC Corporation's detail and lifelike structures were what many found to be its main strengths. Admittedly, the theme does not fit well with 'tables and chairs', but it does not compensate for the lack of detail. Martin is usually great with lighting effects, but once again there are inconsistencies in quality. Some areas have multi sectored lighting effects which work great. Although, I have ghastly images of large slabs of light with crooked edges - ouch! I can't help but think that fans on the original UAC Corporation will be some what dissappointed with this level (level 3). It would work better as a stand alone level, and not such a bad level at that. I'll give it a 7.5, but I doubt that Martin himself would score it that high. |
