| After a self-imposed
exile from the Doom community and almost total abstinence from Doom playing,
Yonatan Donner, level designer for Hell Revealed (amongst other things)
and Doom player extraordinaire, has released two levels in honour of Doom's
5th birthday. The two level set is entitled "Dead Perfect", and as an added
bonus, Yonatan kindly includes demos of himself finishing both levels on
UV.
If you've played Hell Revealed, then you should already know what to expect from these levels. If you haven't, then you'll probably get the shock of your life. Although the 2 levels are very reminiscent of Hell Revealed (ie - damn close to impossible for the ordinary player on UV), they are actually based on deathmatch levels created for Pursuit (a Team TNT DM megawad). The fact that they are based on DM
levels would explain the small size of these levels. Even though they may
be tiny in comparison to many levels today, these levels are some of the
most intense ever seen outside of Hell Revealed. At first glance, they
may appear to be impossible, but, rest assured, they CAN be completed (hell,
just look at the demos !!). The architecture
Yonatan's previous levels have a reputation
for being some of the most intense out there, and these two are no exception.
Right from the word go, you are besieged by monsters at every turn, which
sometimes makes for a lot of fun, and at other times a lot of frustration.
Monster placement is very good, although, you don't really notice it because
they tend to come after you so
The levels in Dead Perfect are shining examples of how to design tough, but playable small levels. I dare say these levels should appeal to just about anyone, mainly because of the full implementation of skill levels, and the fact that they are quick to play. So if you're after a quick, intense, and challenging couple of levels, then these are definitely for you... |
