hell keep (author unknown)

As I don't have a Playstation or PSX Doom, I don't know how good the conversion
is at all, and I am just reviewing this map as if it is any other.
The construction of this map is nothing fantastic, but by the same count it's
nothing dreadful either. It's built-up and compact; a bit blocky perhaps but
realistically functional.
This map runs on map21, and requires an advanced port (?!) because there are
some extra player starts for co-op which DOOM2.EXE doesn't recognise as being
proper things. These are unnecessary, as you probably wouldn't want to play
co-op on this map with more than two players. The gameplay itself is nice and
explanatory (unlike the map reviewed in 027). There are a lot of monsters,
especially in UV, and not quite enough ammo to get rid of them all. This
is annoying, and means that the map requires more thought and sense to
tackle than E3M1 ever did. There is also a bug/design quirk with the
red key; just try getting it while it's on its pedestal....

Errors: none.
The æsthetics are good; the map is convincingly hellish. It is more than
slightly bare in parts though. There is good use of new textures; a convincing
skin texture is the most noticable of these. The details is about on a par
with E3M1. However, there are some bad texture-alignments; x-alignments
too! You can just about see them in the top picture.
The thing placement makes the map feel very desolate.

verdict
Pros: Very hellish and oppressive. Won't slow your machine down.
Cons: Won't run on doom2.exe
More on the right track, but the extra player starts are unnecessary!
