9/26/99 I'd kinda be lying if I said Progress

Some progress. I messed around with DJGPP tonight and really accomplished nothing. I WOULD have gotten to it today, but I was being dicked around by the people of Office Max when it came to memory. So, I go in there, and I find the type of memory I want. The guy goes in the back to find it, and I look around for other stuff. When he comes back, he gives me something totally different than what I selected. I ask him, and he says some guy said it was what I needed. I marvel at this guy's telepathy, and go to find the offender. I find him, then explain exactly what I need, and he agress with me, and goes to get the RAM I need. When he comes back, he says that this is the last one, but on my mother board, you need to add SIMMs two at a time, and this is 'the last one.' Son of a BITCH! They advertise this shit with enormous rebates, and then they DON'T HAVE THE STUFF IN STOCK! Pisses me off! Oh well, later all.

9/24/99 Cool!

Did you all know that pre-owned software kicks ass? You turn in old software you own, get store credit, and other people get to buy it for like $8 at Electronics Boutique. I just bought Terminal Velocity for $8, and Abuse for $5. Both wonderful games, and I can buy a shitload of this stuff and still not break the $50 I spent for C&C2 (good game btw). Hmm, it appears I updated, how about that? :)

-Steve

9/22/99 Aw man

So, alot has happened since my last update. Still no progress, but what do you expect? Band, cross-country, Tiberian Sun, etc. Heheh. Anyway, I have a homecoming date, I shaved my head (teammate had to have brain surgery, we all did it in support and stuff), and other stuff. I forget why exactly I wanted to update. Oh, yeah, I remember, I told myself I was going to update for once. I also said I was gonna clean out my mailbox, but that ain't gonna happen.

-Steve

9/7/99 wh33p

So that word in the title means nothing, but I don't care. Damn I like these Cross Country sweats, I'm gonna buy a pair. Alright, so I feel the need to brag a bit. I got a 19:40 which is about a minute behind my last time on the three mile course. Then, after that, we all headed to Ganzo's for 75 cent taco night, only to be told by the mother of this friend who's in the hospital that we can all visit him. So, after quickly downing three tacos and several Pepsis, we all head over to the hospital in Blues Brothers style (as fast and as recklessly as we could) because visiting hours were almost up. So we get in a good 25 minutes of visitng time and stuff, then we go back and finish the tacos and everything (we had told the waitresses not to clean up because we'd be back, heh). So, after I take a few people home, I do my homework in about a half hour, then work on more programming. Programming is fun when it works, and when its cool. And I think I'll stay up for a while and work on it because I'm all pumped up because of Pepsi (which I shouldn't be drinking, and you shouldn't too if you're in a sport, but then again, I deserve it, heh), and because of my good mood, and because of adrenalin which I've still got leftover from the race. Later all.

8/31/99 Progress - Yes!

Cool, well, I actually got something done. In order to learn pointers, I created a little prog that gets the size of a file, allocates memory, loads the file into memory, and reads it. Alright, it doesn't seem like, much, but using this new information, I can create file loading code that will be able to use either lump or file input, and will be able to well, read it and do stuff. So, that's progress.
In case you people want to hear about my life (yeah, right :), Band has started in earnest, which means that we're learning field positions (that reminds me, I need drill markers)(and another notebook)(and to return that slip...)( heh :), in Cross Country the season just got 'under way' because we ran the first 'hills' practice (yeah, hills, bad deal). Academics are still like, there, and kinda easy... Well, that's about it. Oh, yeah, I've got the house to myself for four days while my parents take my sister to Florida. Cool stuff :)

-Steve

8/29/99 Bah

Progres? Bah, I laugh at the prospect. Homework? Yes. Yes, very much. I have it done tho. Half-Life? Yes, also very much. I finished it for a 4th time on hard, then I downloaded some SP maps and played them. Tomorrow, I go back to school for the first full day of hell, and why won'tthis damn fly stop bugging me? Oh well, I'm sitting here watching 'Who want to be a millionaire?', and this guy is pretty smart, the Indonesian guy. When asked what color Tinky-Winky was, he remembered 'gay', and immediately said purple, 'Because it's a gay color.' I really like this guy. Someday, I may work on PrjDoom. However, Ling has just told me (from on high of course, or was that, while high? I forget :) that he needs quote, "CGI! CGI! CGI CGI CGI!" Okay, so that's NOT a quote, but it'd be funny.

-Steve

8/27/99 School, School, School

Okay, well, school started yesterday, and I assume they're trying to 'break us in' with half-days. I'm a man, I can take it, just sock it to me. Anyway, our school is a complete mess. The scheduling software they installed destroyed their entire computer system, and they had to do all of the schedules by hand. LOTS of them weren't done on the first day of school, and people simply had to go home if they didn't have one. Also because of this, everyone has to go to one room for study hall, and the main hallway is so damn crowded after everyone is let out that I must have been 10 minutes late to my class after that. If you all don't mind my saying, everything is FUCKED. But then again, that's our school system. People (students) they had employed told them, "DON'T INSTALL THAT SCHEDULING SOFTWARE!!!!" But they're like, "You all suck, you're just students, you did all this computer work, but we don't care about your opinion, we're doing it. Oops, it didn't work, can you all come back and fix it?" Did I mention that our school has 2500 lockers and (so far) 2650 students. I believe their plan is to 'wait for the dropouts.' This is my third year at the school, and I must say, I don't blame the dropouts.
Meanwhile, my computer has been fixed. Bad conflicts with all of my other cards. Now I can play Half-Life again, but I've also got homework like mad to do...
Later.

-Steve

8/22/99 StatusWorld

Well, not actually status, but I did do something. Not only did I create a code snippet to find the size of a file (it works!), but I'm working on code to dynamically allocate memory to hold that file in memory, so I can work with it. Alright, it's corny, and it's stuff that I shoulda learned a long time ago, but it's never too late to mend.
I also did another thing. I've got this computer that I just made from parts, well today I got it a few things, a network card, and a sound card so that I can use this old CD-Rom of mine. I love this little self-made wonder. I shall call him... Mini-Me.
Other than that, my sis is moving out and going to college in a few days, so she's going through the millions of things she owns and deciding what to take and what not to take. Hence, there is a huge pile of 'Seventeen' magazines just sitting in the hall. I dunno how I'm gonna do this when it's my turn for college. I've got so much stuff, not to mention my two computers, all my electronics stuff, my stereo (it's kinda crappy, but I think i'll take it), and lots of other stuff.
I'm also sitting here listening to cool music that I finally put on my Rio. Rios rock. They're small, they don't skip, you can take them anywhere, and best of all, they play MP3's, so you can get them anywhere...
Speaking of which, ever seen one of these things that's supposed to be a CD-Player to car stereo adapter? Well, the thing is, most of them hook into the tape player, but this one transmits on the radio, and because of crappy FCC regulations, it's the wussiest transmitter in the world, which means static and crap. Not good. Neither good is the fact that it costs $50.00, and the ones the hook into the tape player are like $20. Needless to say, I dumped the transmitter and bought the other today. I've fulfilled my job of updating today, I'm off all, later.

-Steve

8/20/99 More Status

So why not udpate every day? Hell, why not, my time is practically worthless, I keep giving it to other people (band teacher, x-country coach, employer). So, I've learned lots of things about pointers. Aur is right when he says that they're the hardest part about C. Did you know that an array is really just a pointer? Yeah, the entries in the array are found by incrementing the address of the index (array[0]). Just knowing that opens up a whole new world, you can do lots of stuff.
So, anyone interested about this Daggerfall random quest generator? Yeah, me too, I wish I knew how to do it. The specs for the .qbn and .qrc files are of course, on the web, but the actual problem I'm finding is how the hell do you make a quest random without having it be name shuffling (ie, Indiana Jones' Desktop Adventures - "Find my precious poodle!" - "Find my precious archaeological artifact!" - "Find my Precious!")? Well, what I figure is that there are a bunch of basic goals in DF: kill thing, take thing, deliver thing, etc. Even tho these quests are all basically the same, they're still interesting (witness several DF quest packs based on these simple goals, with each quest using different words to describe it). Now, switching words isn't the only way to make it interesting, you can also add plot twists. A 'basic' quest would be, take letter to man. More advanced quest would be if another group offers you bitchass money for that letter. Dual-ending, what do you do? Cool huh? Well, I figure that's the basic way to do it.
So what else? I'm going through Half-Life for a 3rd time on Hard, so that takes up time. Yeah, I lead a full life, so don't blame me if PrjDoom is late :)

-Steve

8/19/99 Status Report

Not much. Cross-Country is eating at me twice a day, Band is boring me for at least 3 hours every day, and to top it off, I've still got chores to do.
However, I have made SOME progress in the coding area. I've come up with a new project that I can waste my time with. I'm going to design a Daggerfall random quest generator, and hopefully write it too. I have figured out my problem with pointers, and have decided that I should probably stay at remedial C school for a few more chapters. School Time: T-1 week....

-Steve

7/14/99 Okay, auto pilot, check, brakes, check, wings, uh, wings?

Alright, I got the code from one computer to another by uploading it onto DWFTP and redownloading it on this other computer, and I've also got my term paper done, so that means programming should replace philosiphy for awhile. I've also decided to try out for the SkullTag coding position. Anything I do will be merged with PrjDoom. Welps, bye.

-Steve

7/12/99 Sorry

Okay, I was a bit evil yesterday, there are a good number of reasons that I haven't been working yet. Apart from going to summer school till noon each day, and then working til at least 6pm every night, I have a number of 'procedures' I must go through in order to get free time.
Every night I run 3.2 miles to 'stay in shape' (Track coach who's taking too much control over the off season, and for that matter the cross country season: You should run 20-30 miles a week. Me: argh), I have to cut out newspaper clippings so I can have an extemp box for the fall NFL season, and I've also got homework every night, and I've either gotta read philosiphy or write about philosiphy for my term paper every night. So, at about 8:30 (the time right now) I get Free Time, and I'd rather play than work. Also, DJGPP isn't set up on this computer yet, even tho this is technically my 'crap' computer, it's also my 'work' computer (my kickass computer I oddly enough, only use for games). Maybe later (during the school year nonetheless) I may get some free time (argh).

-Steve

7/10/99 Ack!

Did you know that your productivity is inversely related to the number of computers on your home network (I've got 4, and look at me!)? Well, it's true, and, well, I got one thing done in the past, oh 3 or 4 months. CD-Audio is done, so rejoice (if you still care, quite frankly I don't care if you do or don't!). Don't expect miracles though, I'm still enrolled in summer school, and working 8 hour days starting at noon everyday (those damn child labor laws don't apply to farms!). Apart from that, I'm 1. Screwing off, 2. Reading Philosiphy, 3. Doing homework, 4. Etc. I'm not really likely to do anything for at least, oh, WEEKS. In fact, I don't know why I'm making this update, cept that it's late and I've nothing better to do (sleep? ha!).

-Steve

3/13/99 I'm not dead

How weirdly odd it is that the doom community is the community that invented the "I'm not dead" update, huh? :) Anyway, I'm not, and to prove it to you, I'm typing this, right now, as I speak. Anyway work will contine on PrjDOOM when I damn well feel like it, I've still got the State Sci-Fair to go, and it IS track season, so, maybe soon I'll get back to work.

-Steve

1/26/99 Are we defeated?

Lately, things have been getting hard for the Doom community. Many issues have been nagging at our community, causing the edges to become frayed, and ultimately, untied. The Doom community is falling apart, I will not be the first to admit that. Yet, we must realize that. But I think we're all forgetting what exactly a community is. We only get out of it what we put in, and quite frankly, I'm disgusted with the defeatest attitude that's been going around our community lately (read: aurikan and prower). The community isnt' simply something that we can pick up one day, drop the next and forget about. To have a successful community, we must have a long-term stake in what happens here. In aurikan's case, it would be his source projects, for prower, it would have been frad.org. Yet, both of these people have proven to us that they care nothing about the community by simply shafting everyone whom supported them, and treating the community like something that was only worthy of being thrown away. And why? Both have cited as reasons that they were tired of a childlike attitude from some of the members of the community. That's it, right there. My friends, if our community can't even survive a simple, minor problem such as this, what does it say about all of us? What does it say about all we've built? DoomWorld, DoomNation, Boom, do these things mean absolutely nothing to the people who created them? Do they mean so little that just because of the actions of a MINORITY of people in our community, we must destroy all of them? This would seem to be the precedent set by aurikan and prower. I for one cannot tolerate this attitude. If we are a community, we must endure. If we're not, why even bother? Let's all just disband now, obviously, none of what we've done means very much to anyone, it's better we just let it die now, right?
Wrong. I for one will stay here to the death. I happen to like Doom. I know more people happen to like Doom. I refuse to be bothered by a few people whom are too stupid to see the wrong in their own actions, and even go so far as to (*groan) post their stupidity on the DN forums. I pay no attention to them, easy enough. They can come talk to me when they grow up. But, in the meantime, realize this: Your leaving this community symbolizes nothing except your own failure. If you leave, you are weak. If our community is ever to endure, we must pull together, not fall apart. Now is the time, do you have any stake whatsoever in this community?

-Steve

1/16/99 Um, Progress?

Lately, not much has been done, I'm out of my 'programming mood' it would seem. What I *HAVE* done is somewhat interesting. I've added support for a /base directory in PrjDoom. This is basically, all those files that clutter up your DOOM folder will be put in /base, like screenshots, save games, configs, etc. You can even put IWADs and PWADs in there too. CD-Audio is coming along nicely, but overall progress is slowed because I've been really busy lately. NFL, science fair project, school, gawd, sometimes I wish I could NOT do some of this stuff...

-Steve

1/6/99 Lee

I'm updating because many people are not 'getting' or not even caring about the reasons he left.
I know why he left. He left because of me, because of you, because of everyone who ever expected anything out of him, and never told him 'Thank You.' He wasn't a robot, he was a person. Things weighed on him, he had a nervous breakdown totally because of DOOM, and the DOOM community.
But, in a broader sense, it was anyone who ever dispareged a source port, or someone who seriously ragged on any site, either DoomWorld or DoomNation. It was when some guy stole code, and giving no, or small credit to the author. It was anyone who made a big deal of something that was really small. In other words, it was the shit that went on. It keeps going on, in the DoomNation Forums, on people's sites. Worthless ranting, and blatant stupidity. What does DoomNation hurt? Nothing. DoomNation hurts nothing, yet some people continue to by zealots against it, for no good reason. I know about this kind of stuff, and I can say, there is nothing wrong with DoomNation, or hanif.
Lee saw what few people saw or knew. The Doom community's going in the shitter, and fast. Moreoever, it's going in the shitter for stupid reasons. If you've ever ranted, for or against whatever on the DN forums, or posted a rant 'in the heat of the moment' on your page, YOU are part of the problem. 'Is this the hill you want to die on?' That is the decision that we in the community must make. Whether we want to be ripped apart by stupid things like Doom Legacy and its refusal to release source, or how often DoomNation might (if at all) steals news from DoomWorld.
We're showing infantile behavior in more ways than one. Right now, lots of people want Lee's pages to get put back up, irregardless of his wishes. My friends, why don't you just go find him and spit in his face? It'd have the same effect. Yes, they were a great resource, but have you even thought of why he took them down because of our behavior once again. Leaving them up would have been an approval of our behavior. It would be saying that, 'I am leaving because I am disgusted with your behavior, but not disgusted enough to fully remove myself from the community.' Anyway, don't touch his web page. Don't try to put it back up if you've got copies. I know *I* do, but it'll be a cold day in hell before you see them on the web in any form. If you feel that you are entitled to the information on his pages, come visit me in #doomroom on XNet (doomroom.ml.org), I'll change your opinion.
In the end, what we should all be saying is not, 'Look what Lee did to us!' but we should be saying something like, 'Look what he did for us, why were we so stupid?' I suppose you only think about things once you've lost them. Bottom Line: Lee means so much to us now, why didn't we ever think about him when he was participating in our community?

1/2/99 PrjDoom Report

Man, New Years Eve was fun. Friend and I did co-op in DOOM for like, ever. This means I am definitely looking to put in those multiplayer features for the next version, but, in the mean time...
DoomWiz gave this one to me. CD-Audio. It didn't work for him, and I got it to work. Goody for me. Now finish it Steve, finish it! Hehe, well I guess I will, considering that Doomy is moving PrjDoom to the newest version of Allegro. Man, I'm gonna have to move the codebase AGAIN. /me grumbles a bit more

-Steve

12/31/98 Bugs and stuff

PrjDoom has been put on the download page. Please report bugs to prjdoom@doomworld.com.

-Steve

12/30/98 Recant

Ever notice how recant kinda is like the word rant? Oh well, I take back most of my rant yesterday. Why? I've got it on good advice from above that it's not really worth it. Legacy, is a non-port, it really doesn't matter. They don't hurt us, and it should command our interest that they don't release their source, or are full of hacks, or try to upstage someone. Legacy people are always gonna like Legacy, ZDOOM people are gonna like ZDOOM, and hopefully, PrjDoom people will always like PrjDoom. :) If Legacy wants to slowly kill itself by not releasing the source, or anything else, fine. I shouldn't hate them for something that doesn't affect me. So, I retract my former rant. Fab, Boris, good luck, hope you can find luck with your port. Goodbye.
(BTW, yes I AM STEVE, no one stole my update password or anything :)

-Steve

12/29/98 PrjDoom released!

Here is the link. Enjoy as always. The main feature is of course, the ChaseCam. Bye Bye.

-Steve

12/29/98 WOOF!

Alright, officially, the project name is PrjDoom. Ty and I reached an agreemnent through email, because PrjBoom sound a bit too much like just plain 'ol Boom for him, and I respect that. As it stands, most of the issues that were mentioned that held back the release of PrjDoom v0.1 have been resolved, and once DoomWiz fixes the ENDOOM he made (new name and all), I will release it. One note: DEH in WADs is *NOT* supported in this release, that code is going through some changes, and still needs to be debugged, but everyone seems to be wanting a ChaseCam in BOOM and quick, and this version is quite stable and feature-full, that I'm gonna release it.
Next version will either have more multiplayer crap, such as player names, teamplay, etc, or that MAPINFO crap I've talked about, and it WILL have DEH in WADs.

-Steve

12/28/98 Help me! Please?

I'll be your friend? Er, no. Anyway, I forgot to put in my last update that I need people to go here and fill this CGI with dumb, fake updates, but keep it somewhat clean. You see, the DW news updating CGI needs to go through stress-testing before I can put it into use, and there's no better way than having it open to the public, so have at it. For the past history of the DWBS (Doomworld Bullshit), go see mystican, it's in his Misc section. The password is 'pass', just use any username, have fun, don't stay up too late, TTFN.

-Steve

12/28/98 Stuff

Alright, a few things.
Read the DukRant. I was gonna rant today, but I felt that we've had enough, eh?
Somehow, there was no bug with prjboom.wad and loose files. It's something that Windows '95 is doing. As always, blame Bill.
I've been pouring over the 'Pure Doom' thing that's been happening with source ports (witness MBF). And, after playing Half-Life, I can't argue that things like jumping and crouching can really add for infinitely more puzzles and fun in levels. So, I've come to a comprimise. Things like jumping and MLOOK will only be turned on when you're using a modified game. Of course, there WILL be a global option for those things too.

-Steve

12/27/98 Just a LITTLE more...

Hmm, two updates in one day. Blah, anyway, I'm NOT going to release PrjBoom v0.1 yet. There's just too many things left to do. Here's a list of things that are little, and annoying, and are NOT done yet: That's all, don't forget to read the below update!

-Steve

12/25/98 Merry Christmas of course...

Work on PrjBoom going well. Coded two menus today, they dont' LOOK very good yet (no gfx, bad background flat, etc), but they work. One for the ChaseCam, and one for Misc. options. DoomWiz is looking at some updated code for DEH in WADs that I made. Nice and clean now, doesn't need an external file. Too bad it also produces Sigmentation Violations and normal deh including doesn't work under it. I think I'll have a look at the bug with some good old CGI debugging techniques. What the hell, it's only 11:00pm, eh? I'm also looking into a MAPINFO lump to hold things like sky textures (although IMO, the current system I have is better, simplicity), and containing intermission text. That's all so far, if I think of anyting else, I'll add it. If YOU think of anything else, tell me :)
Aur's nbot looks to be cool, can't wait.
20 megs and several hours later, the Alpha Centauri demo has a bad CRC. Hmm, I'm reminded of SiN...
Kudos to Dukrous for electing to put the smack down, and opening his own DukRant site. If you're not pissed off yet, you will be, oh you will be :)

-Steve

12/22/98 Ah, Christmas

Yes, just as the headline says, ah, Christmas Break. I'm gonna get some more work done on the programming. I think I can get player names done quite easily. That is, once I figure out how to add menus in BOOM :( I've gotta do that for the ChaseCam, might as well learn I guess. I hope to get nice and caught up, and hopefully release PrjBoom for Christmas. Yes, I'm dropping SteveBOOM and moving right into PrjBoom because the whole team (DoomWiz and I) have helped on this version. That's about all I can think of for now. Getting the new codebase ready right now...

-Steve

12/19/98 BoomCam

Yeah, it's true, just like it says on Nexus. Doomwiz and I got Aur's Chasecam to fit into Boom. I'd have screenies, but uh, they wouldn't really tell you anything :)
It's based on Boom 2.02. Currently we've totally gotten rid of cam.cfg, and the special Chasecam menu. The ChaseCam settings are within Boom's .cfg file. You can bind the ChaseCam toggle key in the Boom key binding menus. I've renamed the .cfg file also, so regular Boom won't over write the ChaseCam settings if you keep both ports in the same directory (like I do).
It'll be out soon, once I get the rest of my current code in there.

-Steve

12/16/98 Me pisses Ola off

Yikes, Ola musta been pissed when he left IRC (right after a 'spirited' session of discussion about meat eating between the two of us..), considering this was his quit message:

*** citrus has quit IRC (FUCK AMERICA, BLOW THAT SHIT UP, ERASE IT)

I think it was all because of attitude. I was saying things like, "I'm prepared to accept apes as 'not animals'," or, "I'm willing to accept the fact that homosexuality is determined by nature, not nurtur." Ola, if you're reading this, I wasn't trying to display an attitude. I was simply trying to keep the debate focused. If we got on into other subjects such as those, we would have been on IRC forever. I hope you understand. I always considered it good debating...
Then again, it may have been because of my answers to questions like this, "Do you think animals are just machines?" with an unequivocal 'Yes', not a 'No, of course not, lemme explain!' I know that if I accepted something as gospel, I would expect everyone else not to believe diametrically opposite of that belief. Once again, Ola, if you're reading this, I'm sorry, that's just what I believe. Debate wouldn't be very fun if everyone agreed, would it?
In retrospect, I prolly made a few moves that angered you, I prolly made a few in the update up there. But, hell, I can't escape my own opinion, and I'm sure as hell not going to change it, or make believe it's something else just to make someone else happy, or comfortable. So, Ola, I know we didn't leave on the best of terms, but if you want to try to start discussing it again (preferably this time with a few ground rules), we can get back together, just email me.

-Steve

12/13/98 Sadness...

A very sad thing happened today, Lee Killough (the DOOM God as far as I'm concerned), left the DOOM community in search of other arcane things to study (math, IMO, ugh :).
Lee, if you're reading this, lemme tell you, I was considering not updating right now. But when I saw everyone else updating, I thought, "What if Lee is actually reading these things?" And I get to thinking, damn, Lee was a pretty nice guy to me, considering the first time I ever talked to him was when I was acting like a total lamer and sent him an email PLEADING for the DOOM beta (unreleased at that time). He was even a nice guy when I had many many problems with zip files, and downloads. He helped me through them, even when I (an obviously lesser person) would have snuffed off such a 'lamer'.
But Lee didn't think that way. He was courteous, pleasant, and not mean. The loss of his site is akin to the burning of the library at Alexandria for the DOOM community. I almost want to cry when I think of all those pages of notes on the betas, just lost (one of them had my name on it too!). Hopefully, someone has them stored somewhere on their hard drive.
Then, there is also the matter of MBF, which I call Lee BOOM to help people who aren't familiar with it (and then most people go, 'Oh, yeah, that..'). MBF is a wonderful port, much better than BOOM IMO. I won't go incessantly on about features, but it's got lots. MBF will be THE engine for a while, considering both BOOM and DosDOOM don't look to be having releases anytime soon.
Therefore, I have finally come to a decision about which port to base SteveBOOM off of. Steve BOOM will use BOOM 2.02. I figure, if I use MBF, it's more like cheating. I want to have a source port that I can look at and say, "*I* (and DoomWiz) did that." But if I use MBF, I'll have to scrap most of my exisitng stuff (DEH's in WADs, Sky-For-Every-Level, etc). I'm not saying I won't be INFLUENCED by the MBF source, but I won't just cut/paste. I'll figure this crap out on my own. Lee, you'll be proud of me, I assure you.

Meanwhile, Half-Life, GO BUY IT NOW!

-Steve

12/10/98 Happy Birthday DOOM

Well, you guys would kill me if I failed to update on DOOM's birthday, so here goes. Sadly, I don't have anything to release, and not much to say, but bear with me.
First of all, go look at the DOOM Bible. Seriously, you MUST read this thing. The very beginnings of DOOM. Once you've read that thing, the level design and textures in the DOOM betas all make sense
So, DOOM's 5 years old? That's pretty damn old. I can remember the first time I played DOOM. It was on my neighbor's (what passes for neighbor out here in the country, about a mile or two) computer. Most of that experience consisted of trying to make that darn door open (the one door on every level that doesn't open nonetheless, the one at the beginning), my friend telling me, "Here, let me press this for you," and me wondering why all these new places I was visiting all looked like the same place :(
So, after that, he and I get together in this game trading thing (and YES, it DID consist of retail games :). At first, I had a choice between "Descent", or "DOOM". Both names being totally unfamiliar to me, I chose the one that had demons on the box.
That was a pretty damn good choice.
One week later: having learned the ins and outs of the game, I was cruisin. The game scared me. The game scared me even when I wasn't the person playing it. I remember late nights with my brother and sister, running through E1M5, hearing those demons growling, and while he played, I sat in the seat next to him, scared out of my wits because of that.
I liked this game.
I mean, a GAME that can scare you, truly. I had adrenalin pumping through me. Everytime I went through the ambush after the two lowering pillars in E1M5, I was sweating, cause I knew it was coming. Slowly, I would get my courage up, and charge the bastards. Sometimes I needed a BREAK, but not because of eye strain, or tiredness, but because I was SHAKING from fear. This is THE GAME, whenever I was away from it, I began to think of it, of the dark, moody corridors, the growls and grunts of the monsters, and of the vast, uncharted regions of the registered version. What could lay beyond the walls of the shareware version? What kinds of new weapons and monsters would I have to face?
No other game has done that to me since. Not Quake, not Heretic (okay, a BIT), not Hexen. DOOM was the one and only, it still is.
Happy Birthday good buddy.

12/9/98 What happened to DOOM?

Alright, point one:
What... is the deal... with the 'Uber-port"?

So, now we've got OGRE, and I'm not even going to link to it, cause it's just too weird. Suddenly, after months of expecting a DOOM port, they tell us that they're gonna make on Open Source 3D Engine and base it on DOOM. Umm, okay, good, I guess, but what happened to DOOM? Yeah, I *guess* on Open Source engine would be good, but I wanted DOOM!
I won't go into the reasons that DOOM is so good, because everyone knows it. Basically, this engine will have to compete with engines like Quake, and play against games like Half-Life (are you all gonna kill me if I say I don't have it yet? :). Therefore, they have to change the engine to make it more competative. You know sprites? Whoops, they're not competative anymore, we need models. You remember sector based editing (quite possibly the easiest meathod of editing for the power it brings)? That's not competative anymore, everyone wants 3D. Oh, yeah, you know what Open Source means? It means that people who might not care about DOOM (they might love *shudder* Quake) will be putting crap in the engine. Maybe they'll give us lots of 'features' we don't really want, oh great!
Bottom line: watch DOOM go right out the window. It's gone, bye bye. This engine has no chance of being anything even remotely DOOM-like, save the fact it will be a 3DFP engine.

CGI Progress

Eh, some. I think I'll try to do some work tonight after my homework is done. I've found a way to make sure that it alwasy finds and replaces the text it needs to. A few other problems are: That's that progress so far.

PrjDOOM Progress

None. I've emailed Lee Killough about some stuff, maybe something will happen.

Science Fair Project

Some. I finally started to figure out some stuff. AI is pretty complicated, and I'm only doing simple stuff. Maping is next!

-Steve

12/5/98 Why Does This Suck So Much?

Okay, back from speech tournament, don't ask how I did, it's another one of those 'first time' things :(
Progress on PrjDoom: None. BWAHAHAHA! Self-Governed projects are the best, I only have to meet my own expectations! HAHAHAHA!
Alright, so I'm lazy, so sue me. I've also got a lot of other things to do. That DOES remind me, I managed to fix the HTML error on the DW CGI, so I've also gotta fix a few more bugs in the CGI, and modify the DW shit for compatibility, all that crap, could take me awhile.
I do have a few ideas for PrjDoom. The BEX-Based intermission screens are not working at all and Doomwiz and I have frowned all we can at the code, so I've decided to change the intermissions, skies, and several other things to a MAPINFO lump type structure.
That is all for now, do not turn off your television. Don't attempt to change the picture, we are in control. For the next hour, we will control your thoughts and... Hey, wait, that's the thing at the start of every Outer Limits episode! My bad definitely! Hehehe.

-Steve

11/24/98 Must... Sleep...

Uh oh! I left the site in disrepair because I didn't update once! *GASP* /me chastizes himself. In fact, updates will be sparse for a while. Covaro and I are trying to weed out an HTML error in the updating CGI, maybe take a while, maybe not. But, even after that, I regret to inform everyone, that in planning my long-term goals for this winter, I failed to put in PrjDOOM.
Another thing's also been eating at me. LeeBOOM. It seems like one hell of a port, and substantially more than a simple BOOM update. I get the feeling that it's gonna knock the socks off of the source port world (unless of course, DosDOOM gets DDF out first :). I can tell you, big things are happening in the source port world. Mainly, the people who make source ports are actually listening to the people who make the levels, and putting in the features they want! ;)
At this point, I must say that I don't think it would pain me to see PrjDOOM become part of a larger group, whether it be Lee's group (if he will continue his port, anyone?), or Matt Denham's 'BOOM-Next' type port. It'd certainly take some load off me, and my winter is gonna be chock-full.
In fact, after the CGI is totally debugged, in addition to the regular homework, I'll have: Jazz Band, Pep Band, NFL, TubaChristmas, and the science fair. And I don't even think that's a complete list!
Maybe I need a break, a break from doing no work on SteveBOOM nonetheless :)

-Steve

11/21/98 AAAAAH!

Those evil people on cyberspace.org are trying to get to me again. No matter, I've got math homework to do.
And it's also almost done. Those 5 months of planning really helped, i've only got minor (well, minor compared to the errors I had last time!) errors to contend with. I should be able to move it to Doomworld for final testing if needed (I hope not, debugging mode is a Godsend).
This whole experience has scared me a bit, so I'm seeking out some proper CGI testing space after this. I know someone who runs a linux server, free. It's a good deal, I think I'll sign up.

-Steve

11/20/98 Oh man

Man, this CGI debugging thing is getting scary. Technically, you're not supposed to have CGI on cyberspace.org. But, ever since Telnet access was cut off to DW (now who caused THAT, hmm?) I've needed a place to practice my black arts.
So, I think to myself, "Self, cyberspace.org is free, and has telnet access, what could be cooler?" So I do it, I get an account, and it works out for a while. The finger CGI, and a few others, all tested out and debugged out first on cyberspace.org.
But, only recently, this guy has been messing me whenever I start to debug CGI. It's starting to scare me, so, if anyone knows of a place where I can get telnet access for CGI debugging, send me a note, and tell me about it. Oh, and it has to be free ;)
Meanwhile, the CGI appears to have only two show-stoppid (Read: Error 500 type) errors, so we're all good there.

-Steve

11/18/98 Oh man...

Man, just when I get to liking this NFL thing, everything starts sucking by happening on Saturdays. First this parade in which our band is participating, decides to make itself on a Saturday. First of all, it's a Christmas tournament, and it hasn't even been Thanksgiving yet. Secondy, it sucks, I hate it. Okay, not much of a point, but it does suck. I mean, I have the opporotunity to do something IMPORTANT, not just parade around to jack up the 'it's only 145245253435 weeks before Christmas' "spirit".
I hate that too, 'It's only 5 weeks until Christmas.' Fuck that's annoying. 'Look, Halloween is over, start pumping the public for massive Christmas buying so we can capitalize on the holiday and make people forget what it's actually about!' GRRRRRR! Whatever happened to singing carols, and egg nog, and snowball fights. I'll tell ya what happened, it's all El Nino's fault. Yep, I'm blaming it on El Nino.
Think about it, not as much snow as before years, therefore, no snowalls, no big fires in fireplaces, because it's not as cold, no more feeling of warmth from inside house, because it's not that cold. Hey, yeah, I'm insane, but damnit, it's ALL EL NINO'S FAULT!

The other tournament I'm missing is one I'd like to get to, but I'm not so mad about the reason I'm missing it. I've got a big concert, for like, only Baritones, Tubas, and Sousaphones. Lots of us get together and play Christmas Carols. Perhpas you've got one in your region, it's call TubaChristmas.
I'd like to get to it, because it's at our school, but it's also on Dec. 12, which is closer to Christmas.. so I'm happy ;)

-Steve

11/17/98 Oh!

Oh, and the suggestion CGI has been fixed, it's in the EXE Changes section, under User Suggested suggestions.
And the voting page results thingy now works. *sigh* Vote page, need new vote...

-Steve

11/17/98 Yawn

Alright, finger updated yet again...
Man, Twilight Warrior is a cool thing, a goodness even. The only real problem is lack of mission briefings. Other than that, goal oriented missions work well, except that when the hostages die, the mission shouldn't end normally. Mike Gummelt once told me about a little trick he figured out with Dehacked.
Basically, the hostage walks towards you, and you pick him up, he gives you a key (actually, he IS the key). That is, if he survives, if he gets killed, then his body turns into a different key. One key goes to a 'good' exit, the other may send you to a secret exit, which sends you to the secret level. Of course, that only works in DOOM if i remember, not DOOM2 :(
I thought it was a neat idea anyway...

-Steve

11/16/98 Uh oh...

DoomNation has given CGI updating to all its sites. The CGI war is now on, take no prisoners....

-Steve

11/15/98 -Worthless Text-

I've decided to give myself a finger, and I've revamped PrjDOOM's finger service. First, it looks better. Second, I added the tracker you see above.
Since I'm not gonna put programming stuff here anymore, I might as well put worthless things here. Yesterday: NFL tournament. I swear, those things remind me of track meets in a weird way. In both, you go a long way on a bus with lots of other people. When you get there, you sit around for a long time, your free time seperated by moments of terror when you actually have to DO stuff! Anyway, I got third place in L-D (Lincoln-Douglas) Novice. Definitely not bad, for my first time, ever. Plus, my speeches really, really sucked. Didn't even follow the form of how they're supposed to go. I also believe I lost all my rounds. Don't ask ME how I won ;)

-Steve

11/12/98 Lemme get, right on that, no, wait...

Man, it seems like everytime I try to do one source change, I find some other facet in the source and go h4x0r away on that...
Well, if you hadn't guessed what that meant, it means I haven't got ambient sounds done (or teamplay for that matter :(). But, I did make a rather interesting change. It's based on the stats screen that Rethcir used in his SLIGE-DosDOOM prog. (I don't know whether he released that or not, anyone?)
Basically, it doesn't display the interpic during the stats showing at the end of the level. That means that whatever was last on the screen stays there (usually just a picture of you pushing a button). One thing that's NOT so good is that anything displayed on the screen while in this mode stays there, so I had to alter the placings of a few things so that nothing would be displayed at the same coordinates.
The effect still doesn't look very good for normal levels, but I got an idea when I was playing MAP30 with it on. I think,"Man, I get to see myself kicking the brain's ass, what with the explosions and all. So, I added checks to enable it on MAP30, and every boss level for DOOM 1, thereby providing for you a pic of you killing a boss.
The only thing that could make it better would be if I could get my hands on the chasecam source, and activate it right before the end of the level, so you get a cool third person pic, not a crummy first person one.

Also, I changed the source so that the port now uses it's own config file, sboom.cfg. I was getting tired of the original BOOM overwriting and removing my new vars.

-Steve

11/1/98 More Changes

Man, if you've in debate, I wouldn't advise taking Lincoln-Douglas debates as an event. This is my first year in speech, and my coach supplied me with some reading material and tapes and so forth. I read the stuff, and thought, hey, this is really cool! Then I watched the tapes. Man, even though it probably IS fun, it's also a lot of work. Those people are up there talking at a thousand miles an hour just to get all their points in, and talking about stuff that I don't understand somewhat.
I don't care of course. I'm going to the tournaments, and if i make a fool of myself, I make a fool of myself, if I lose, I lose, not the end of the world. There's always next year ;)

Alright, some PrjDOOM stuff. I've decided to take a crack at ambient sounds. AFAIK right now, this isn't so hard. A few new objects, new frames for them, new sounds, and a new sub to handle playing the sounds. Change a few things in info.c, and I'm off! I also plan to do intermittent sounds that play a random sound from a set of three sounds, randomly. Should be interesting ;)

-Steve

10/26/98 WTF?

Alright, this is just about it. If you didn't believe that Doomnation was just chock full of Quake-heads, take a look at this. Doom Clans? There are no such things. Clans are for the pitiful Quake community, we don't need them. What gross assumptions. What does hanif think? That the only way that the DOOM community can be 'saved' is to become more like Quake? Oh, let's all thank hanif, without him DOOM would die! And with him DOOM will also die. Forget the community we've got now, forget a group of loyal people dedicated to worshipping a great game, we need to be more like QUAKE! Of course, let's all thank hanif for showing us the way! More lamers! More cheaters! More people who whine! What we've got now is worthless because we're not like QUAKE! It's ALL clearer to me now.
If you can't tell, this truly pisses me off. This should be a message to all old-time true DOOM players: DOOMNation is not here for the benifit of the DOOM community, it's here to change the community into something worse. Be weary.

-Steve

10/24/98 Decisions decisions...

An interesting decision has come to my attention. I just saw on the Twice Risen page that they have obtained the use of Lee Killough's enhanced BOOM engine.
Now, we (actually, I had, since I don't ask anyone else before the 'group' makes decisions ;) had decided to implement the 2.02 source into Steve BOOM. But, if Lee's version is not only the same, but superior to 2.02, then I'll just say, screw 2.02, and go totally with Lee's. If not, I can attempt to mish mash the two.
Having worked with the BOOM source for a long time, however, I don't doubt Lee's ability, or thouroughness (sp?), so I suspect that we may only use his version.

-Steve

10/22/98 Excellent

Alright, the new BOOM source base is out. I'll put it into Steve BOOM when I get the chance.
In other news, I hear Heretic2's demo is supposed to be out tonight.

-Steve

10/19/98 Hmm

It's been a bit since I updated. Well, things are going slowly, if at all. Cross Country is almost over, so that's good. Not gonna go out for basketball this year, trying out NFL (speech) club and working on my science fair project again. My goal is to have it work this year, so, now wires, only programming ;) As far as I know, none of my programs have ever caused something to catch on fire, but you might want to ask Raven about that ;) DoomWiz has joined the team which you might already know. He says he'll be busy for a bit with DoomNation stuff (ugh). I don't know about the progress of Reth on player names/colors, so I'll try to get to him.

-Steve

10/11/98 Yay!
Alright! Thanks to my ingenuity (and dumb luck) my updating CGI now works... So, I'll get things back to 'normal' around here. One good note, Doomwiz signed up as a programmer, check him out on the members page.

-Steve

-Steve

9/29/98 Steve Comes Through Again!
Well, it's been a cool # of days. First, a new version of Steve BOOM is up, Dehacked patches in WADfiles this time, check it out, it's rather cool.
Second, I'm working on revamping the pages, they look MUCH better now, I'm 'borrowing' ideas from other source pages, and I'm gonna have mystican, the all-purpose web page god check out the HTML, do some graphics, etc.
Third, I might be getting a German. Exchange student that is, I think it'd be cool...

-Steve

9/24/98 Whew!
Alright, the Computer Wipe went well, and the internet works well now. However, one of my DJGPP files was damaged somehow, so I have to re-download it before I can get back to work.
A few more planned things I've been thinking about: Intermission screen for every level, cutscenes (okay, demos) before levels, and picture after levels (like the pictures used after each episode in DOOM 1). Since I've had nothing to do in Band each morning, I spent an inordinate amount of time deciding whether demos should go before or after levels. I don't know why I just put this, except that I'm weird. More on this later...

-Steve

9/17/98 Ack!
Oh damn, I hate it when stuff like this happens. Well, the deal is, that MY computer, the horribly tweaked-out registry patched ini file changed super-kickass computer can't connect to the internet, and my PARENT's computer, the 16-mb-of-RAM-haven't-defragged-in-2-years-we-play-solitaire-and-do-bookwork-on computer, connects fine :( Anyway, this means that I'm going to do one of my favorite things, which is to totally wipe both md HD's and reinstall everything from scratch. Thank God for a ZIP drive... Anyway, before I take the plunge, I've uploaded Steve BOOM which has an interesting feature. Other than tweaking the falling damage, it is now turned off for demo compatibility, and can be turned on and off in the boom.cfg file. I've yet to come to a decision about multiplayer, but I will probably turn it off for multiplayer. The other feature is "Sky for Every Level." A texture called sky_1 will be used on level 1, sky_2 for level 2, etc. A sky_def texture is used instead of the original skies, but not the level sky. It's kinda complicated, but it's all explained in the text file, enjoy!

-Steve

9/12/98 Steve BOOM Source Released
Alright, since right now I actually have FREE TIME (an idea unknown to most people of my age this time of year), I've decided to catch up on a few things that I've been meaning to do. One of them was to release the Steve BOOM source. So, go grab yourself a copy here. If you want to use this source in a TC or something, email me and I'll give you instructions on what you should do to credit me, cause I'm too lazy to figure out what should be done while I'm typing this. If you use such code w/o my knowledge and I find out, umm, well, ph33r my wrath ;)

-Steve

9/7/98 PrjBOOM 0wnz j00 4ss
I've got a new version of Steve BOOM. Nothing MAJOR in this version, just falling damage, don't forget to fully read the text file, it's fascinating ;)

-Steve

9/1/98 PrjDoom Updates(!)
My god, first thing, I HATE school. Getting more specific, I hate band. Field positions, suck! Not to mention, that our band teacher is the self-styled band teacher from hell (he even has a t-shirt that says that, swear to God). Up every morning at 6:00, into school at 7:00, and out of school at 7:00, 12 hour days. On the plus side, I don't ever have to bring homework home.
Oh, yeah, another thing, cross country is starting to suck too. If it weren't for the chicks in sports bras, I might quit, but I doubt it. To give you an idea of how much it's starting to suck, five of us ran 6 miles. When we get back, we learn that we only had to run 5 miles. At least there were popsicles... And then, there's the infamous 'Hill-Day', when we run nothing but hills all practice. Fun.
But, on to some REAL news, a new version of Steve BOOM is up. The only new feature that this adds is sloshing sounds in water, which is kinda kickass. I've agreed to do some work for TC's after this, so the next version of Steve BOOM might take a while. Also, Rethcir, one of our programmers, has almost finished player names, and once I merge that with My current sources, you won't have the gay 'Player' get killed by something, but, your very own name! And multiplayer death messages too! j00 just wait ;)

-Steve

8/22/98 oops...
Alright, the link to the zip in the last update was bad, but I fixed it, so go download it now ;) I've mailed some members from whom I've not heard ina long time, maybe it'll wake them up...

-Steve

8/20/98 Next!
A new version of Steve BOOM is up, and today's newest addition is single player death messages! Stuff like Player was killed by a Cacodemon, or, Player got shot by a Trooper, stuff like that. Next up, Rethcir will do player names, and I will broaden the scope of death messages to include multiplayer, ie, player1 killed player 2, only, not so gay ;)

-Steve

8/17/98 TCP/IP BOOM, Released
Alright, my TCP/IP BOOM mod is now on the doomworld ftp at ftp://ftp.doomworld.com/prjdoom/PrjBoom.zip. So, go get your fill of internet play!

-Steve

8/16/98 I'm running out of cool things to put here
Alright, this is kinda cool. In my efforts to learn C and the DOOM source, I managed to do something useful. I merged BOOM's source w/Doomworld's source, and it appears to have worked! So, we can now play BOOM on the internet, for whatever purpose that server, little if any if you ask me, except that you can now play BOOM maps in dm over the internet, to which I say, umm, KAZOL!? Also, I added a cheatcode, prjshot, which gives you a shotgun ;) My h4x0ring skillz are almost complete... I'll put the exe up here when I make a text file w/the proper credits given to everyone and such, and when I get some FTP space....

-Steve

8/13/98 Wh00p
A cool, but sad thing happened today, vmlinuz (creator of Doomworld, the only internet capable DOOM port) has quit his work, but has released the source. As sad as this is (his next version was going to kick ass), PrjDOOM will most likely use his source as a base for our TCP/IP. We will of course, make changes depending on what we need.
Also, let's welcome another member to the team, jason.

-Steve

8/7/98 I don't fell so.. *BAAARF*!
Well, the day at Great America went somewhat well. After paying the $34.00 to get in, we immediately went to the biggest scariest roller-coaster that they could find. Being my first time, they judged it sufficient for my use. Of course, I loved it, and didn't get sick. After that, we went to more, and more, and more. Every single roller-coaster, and The DROP. The DROP takes you 200ft up, and then drops you. So, you're sitting up there, in a chair attached to basically a big pole, then the thing that carried you up there, let's go. I don't care who you are, or how brave you are, YOU WILL SCREAM YOUR FREAKING HEAD OFF.. for the three seconds or so it lasts, then, it's over. After the 17 hour day, we went home, got lost about 10 times, and ended up taking 4 hours to make a 3 hour drive. after the 5 hours of sleep I got that night, I somehow managed through band, and brought my hogs into the fair. Hogs are a LOT better than sheep.... After quite a late night, and more lack of sleep, we come to today, when I am a walking zombie, that is all for right now....

-Steve

8/4/98 j00 h4x0r fr4d
Ahh, nice day at the local fair. Rained like NO OTHER.... And tomorrow, I get to go w/friends to Great America, WHERE THE WEATHER FROM HERE IS GOING! *sob* Note to self, take several pairs of clothes.... Kinda interesting, but today I helped someone to show sheep at the fair. Hehe, oh well, I suppose you've gotta be in #doom2 often to get it....
In misc news, Aurican gave us a new version of the Chasecam mod, with a source so easy to merge I could do it! I just may, if I get BOOM to compile correctly for once....

-Steve

8/3/98 Looks Great, Less Filling!
By now you should learn to ignore the headers completely ;) At the DoomWorld Mailbag the people's opinions were weighed in on the current 'Uber-Port'. %84 - %16 in favor of the 'Uber-Port'. IMO, pitiful. Everyone whining about 'great features, a mesh of two leading ports!' when the first thing you have to do is to have it done... Oh, sure the PREMISE is okay, but so is the premise for Communism. So, I ask you to give me your vote, click here if you are against the 'Uber-Port', and click here if you are against it. Now, be nice, and only vote once or twice so we have something for a fair vote ;)
Also, the fingers page is up, go track the progress of the source port.

-Steve

8/2/98 Hehe, well...
It seems that public response to the new 'Uber-Port' is mixed at best, for a full list of site, visit DoomWorld has a list of sites that have updated for/against it, it's worth a look. Also, they ask you for YOUR opinions, so mail them what you think, have your opinion be heard.
Wow, this updating thing could really take hold with me, so far, we've had three days in a row. Not much groundbreaking stuff is going on in the project, people still plugging away at the source. I could still use on or two more programmers, so, if you think you fit the bill, just give me a mail. In non-DOOM related stuff, I'll take a minute to point out something I feel is a bit odd. At our school, band practice has started before football practice has. I'm not talking about time of the day, but time of the year. Just so we can play at the football games in half-time, we've gotta have more training than the players themselves. I dunno, but I find that odd... Also, local fair time has come around, and I took my Finger CGI in as a program, got a champion on it, hmmm, and people complain ;)

-Steve

8/1/98 BOOM in trouble?
Before reading this update, I suggest that you read Lee Killough's page for background. Lee was a programmer on BOOM, and his insight into the 'Uber-Port' matter is very helpful (and Lee, if you are reading this, take off the Hotmail filter on your email!). Now that you've read that, lemme fill you in on a theory of mine. The makers of BOOM, (TeamTNT), stated early on in the making of the port, something to the effect of 'we're not gonna have hacks, we're gonna do this right.' And that's all well and good. In fact, they made entirely new translucency code when there was already existing code, to avoid having a 'hack' in their code. At the time, DosDOOM, and DOOM Legacy had the said translucency code. Now, months later, after BOOM phase one, we hear that BOOM will MERGE it's codebase with DosDOOM's. But wait, I thought we wanted no 'hacks'! Surely, if there was reason enough to throw away already made transluency code in favor of making your own, can you really trust code from the same place that had the bad translucency code? My theory: TNT either lost, or never had a meaning, a will, a purpose in creating BOOM. It also occurs to me, that internal conflict could have added to this. Lee himself even says that near the end of the making of BOOM, making simple decisions was hard. -Side rant- For some odd reason, TNT felt the need to 'discuss' each and every change it made to the source. I've often thought of a certain scenario I created for their decision making process:
Leader: Alright, here's a change to discuss, MLOOK, suggestions?
Peon1: Shall we put that to committee?
Leader thinks for a second.
Leader: Okay, committee it is. Next, Hicolor modes, suggestions?
Peon2: Umm, committe?
Leader: NOW we're getting things done (starts to write committe very many times on a piece of paper...)
Heh, anyway, I always thought it was funny. I also find it odd that BOOM would ally with the largely spontaneous DosDOOM. As Lee has said to me before, they should call the end product DoomMesh ;) So, pretend you're TeamTNT, and you're in trouble, the people on the source port have lost their will, people are leaving, what do you do to make people regain interest? That's right, DOOMMesh! Let's give everyone big news that we're sacrificing the engine we wanted to save our credibility! Although I've not been in this community too long, TNT do not seem like the people whom would sell out just to stay in business. So, that's my theory about this whole mess. Do you have one?

7/31/98 Source Ports Collide!
In a major news story today, BOOM, DOSDoom, WinDOOM, and PRBOOM (whatever it is) joined forces to create the fabled 'Uber-Port', the name given to the super port that everyone loves and has everything that everyone wants. To get the full scoop, go to DoomWorld for the full story plus a mailing. At this point, I must say, I'm weary of it. I much better liked a 'free market' when it comes to source ports. Someone thinks up a good idea, adds it in. If people like, it, they copy it, put it in their own, plus their own ideas, thus making every port better, while maintaining an environment that urges bringing the best, quickest, and most wanted code to the people sooner, better, whatever. But now, we've lost a few choices. Now, instead of several smaller, more efficient source teams, we've got a large bueracracy (sp?). I may be different than you, but I don't want to have every single change that you're gonna make to a source base going through a committe, or having a major source group leave a cool feature out to meet a deadline, or becuase not enough people wanted it, or whatever. I'm sure that at a few of us see this, becuase several projects, namely DOOM Legacy and ZDOOM, aren't taking part in the new 'Uber-Port'. I can tell you, w/o a good reason, I see no reason to take part either. I may have more on this.

7/24/98 Cool!
Since the CGI (not the maker, CGI) screwed up, I'll repost that last update.
Something really cool happened today! Actual work got done! Yep! No, I'm not kidding, work. The first ground has been overturned! Also, I redid the pages, things should be easier for newbies now. And, there's also a special surprise which I will tell you all about soon, but, not now. I'll just tell you this: It will kick ass!

Well, during a re-upload, the news file got mangled, so, hopefully, this will help it along...

7/19/98 Cool Stuff
I was going through my trust E: drive when I found something cool. ZDOOM was a pretty kickass DOOM port (maybe the project's still going on, but I dunno). It has lots of cool stuff. Basically, you take DosDOOM, WinDOOM, and ATBDOOM (Andy Bay's ill-fated Windows port), plus a few level features (ambient noise, a level 'scripting' language to control things like sky tex, etc), and you've got it. It's truly good, I suggest that you keep it from dying, if it's not already dead.

7/15/98 Bam
Okay, the Windows Team is now fired, be prepared for the best. Here's the new plan: The engine is now based on Boom made by TeamTNT. It will now be an all DOS engine. Subsequently, I will need DOS DGJPP programmers, so send in yo freakin applications ;) Also, I will be redoing the pages soon.

7/8/98 Hopefully....
Alright, the first big step in getting work done has been well, done. The job selection CGI is now in place. No, I won't tell you where it is, because it's hidden and secure, so don't bother. Now, the harder part is getting the programmers to take jobs and program stuff. And quite frankly, I think that they think that people don't care about the project anymore. Now, first of all, I KNOW this isn't true. I've got people who post regularly to the suggestion page, I've got people who still bug me about updating the page on IRC, I've still got people sending me inane questions about DOOM because they think I'm some kind of DOOM god. So, the Project DOOM name is out there, and people know it, and some of them still care. So, don't tell me NOW that, when there's a chance that real work could be done, that everything will conk out on me. I know that I didn't work to get this far, and I know I'm not going to quit now. So, if the current programmers don't add up, I'll fire them all and get a new batch. I'll move the engine platform to DOS if I must, but I'll do it. Project DOOM gets off the fucking ground NOW.

6/11/98 Ahhh, Better
Ah, three days, one CGI, life is good, .plan CGI is all up and running, and that's .plans for all of Doomworld. For everyone who's interested, here is a sample output.

6/8/98 Hey!
Hey, whaddya know, this stuff actually works. That's odd because most of my stuff never seems to.... But, I digress. I'm going to make an actual update, or at least try. Maybe a progress report on my CGI would be in order? As of now I'd say that the CGI is 90% done. Ling and Cov are still asking "Is it done?!?" everytime they see me on IRC, and that sucks. Oddly, since I turned off the flashing on the taskbar for new messages, I've gotten a lot more done. I also got Perl for Windows 95, and it's been quite the help. It automatically debugs, and, er, uh, that's the most beneficial part of it anyway. Lemme tell ya, this stuff used to take hours to resovle, but now it only takes minutes. It's been a wonderful help to me. After this CGI for Doomworld, I've got two others to do. One is a shorthand HTML script, which just searches HTML files for certain custom tags and replaces them with the real tags. The second is a general finger script which shouldn't take too long. Even though I'm building these from scratch, they shouldn't take too long since now I've got a nice knowledge of Perl in me. Gawd this is nice, I don't have to fuck around with uploading shit anymore, I just type the whole update into the text box, and BAM! Instant update. Man, I really wish I could do something about this cough. Anyway, that's the lowdown if everyone wants to know. After the CGI is done, I get to work on the project, and put it on what I call "cruise control" for a while, because, let's face it, the summer is almost always a busier time than school is....
