About This File

Vanilla mod, changing the player's basic weapon.

You start with double pistols instead of one, so that you can fire significantly faster, only 50% slower than with the chaingun. It's supposed to improve gameplay balance, since the single pistol normally becomes useless after you find chaingun.

The mod is realized via custom sprites and a vanilla compatible DEHACKED patch. Run it along with the IWAD/PWAD you're playing. Also you can feel free to add contents of this mod to your own Doom wad you're making.

These dual pistol sprites are not just a mirrored pistol graphic, the shading is fixed so that both pistols have a shadow on the same side. It should make the pistols look more natural, and it's the difference from other dual pistol sprites.

If you dislike the fire sound replacement, feel free to remove or replace it.

Side effects of this mod (they are given by the restrictions of vanilla DEHACKED): -You always fire both pistols consequently, so that 2 bullets are used. -The chaingun spins and flashes faster now, but gameplay-wise it behaves like a normal chaingun. -SS Nazi has been altered in a couple states, and as a result, he fires a bit faster and shares most of his gibbing animation with shotgun guy, but it's not very noticeable.

By "not very noticeable" you mean "very really noticeable"? Except that, it's exactly what the title says.

This is a cool vanilla mod, I always loved mods that gave the player 2 pistols. I would have never noticed the SS gib if it wasn't pointed out, not that it matters anyway.

The fire sound's too loud but the mod's pretty cool and I like how you made the light on the other hand to appear in the same direction. The chaingun is now a minigun! Muhaha!! I would rate this 6/5 for the chaingun replacement.

I respect the endeavour (one-man megawads are a herculean feat, no matter how you spin it) and the author's dedication to showcase his love for the classic FPS games of the nineties through a swath of references, but unfortunately, despite the occasional glimpses of brilliance, the combat in Hellbound is an absolute slog. For better experience, play with a mod - one that preferably makes your arsenal a bit deadlier, so you can enjoy both the fights and the sights. Without enhanced armaments, however, you might just end up quitting early over the tediousness of clearing the gobs of meat thrown your way one stunningly decorated rectangular hallway/square-shaped room after another.

Quite honestly just painfully dull. I played up to about map11 and all of the maps were nice-looking but vaguely city shaped beige things. Monster placement seemed scattered and random and combat mostly devolved into slow rolling everything with the super shotgun because you barely get ammo for anything else.

Did I write a review of this last time it popped up? Dunno...   Anyway, PAR-LUTZ has been a repeat play for me many times over the last - OMFG! - 20 odd years. Compared to most of the dross that was available at the time, this mapset was a revelation. Because of it's size and complexity, it was never boring to replay, 'cos there was always more to see.  The influence and impact it had was, I guess, somewhat like Breach, many years later.   And, yes, it might not always be 'Doomy' but I loved the tricks that were done in some of the maps, which set it apart from much of the stuff at the time.
