DooM The Movie: To Be? OR... Not To Be?

Who's ever wondered about DooM becoming an 'All Time' Blockbuster Motion Picture?

I read in some game magazine last year that a Doom movie was in the works w/ Bruce Campbell. Seeing as I've read nothing about it since then, its probably scrapped.

I read about it in wizard magizine. Todd McFarlane is making the bad guys or some thing.

There'd better not be any really bad words in it, or I'm not seeing it. I still haven't watched the South Park movie, and I probably never will...

I'm sure the first thing he's gonna say when he sees all the zombified space marines and demons and imps is "Hello there!"

Tomb raider: run, shoot, run, run, jump, run, slow, run, shoot..........
Doom : slow, shoot, shoot, shoot, run, run, shoot, shoot, shoot, die, restart, slow, slow, shoot, shoot, shoot, ................

I was a little worried about that when I was 13 and Quake was about to come out (this was around the time that the development of the DOOM movie became known), but now I'm 17 and I figure that if the movie even comes out I'll easily be 18 by then. The movie is probably not coming out for another two years so I doubt you'll have much to worry about either.

Now that d3 is in the pan someone is most surely gonna try (at least) to make a DOOM movie. I'm not worried about cussing at all. They couldn't put in anything worse than what I can find in my head, if I search well enough :). Really, a DOOM movie without hard words sounds funny; maybe Walt Disney should work on it. It would matter, though, if it sucked. It would have to be better than Aliens to be worthy, IMO.

Well, as long as there are scenes of: zombies getting their brains splattered everywhere, decapitations, imps ripping people limb from limb, demons chewing faces off marines, and cyberdemons blowing individuals into a mist of fine chunks with their rockets, I don't really care if there is any swearing or not :)

This is the most recent entry on the cinescape.com rumor page for Doom:

August 16, 1999
It sounds as if the big screen version of the Doom computer game has gone belly up. According to the IGN SciFi website, John Carmack
owner of Id Software and one of the programmers of the game revealed at the QuakeCon gaming convention that the project is kaput.
The site quotes Carmack as saying that the company looked at "at a couple of scripts" which were described as "awful." Carmack also
revealed that TriStar let the film option on the project lapse and no one else has come looking to pick them up. One of the scripts
mentioned may have been the script to have been written by Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, as reported in the Insider way back on
December 21, 1998.

Makes sense to me.. What could a movie about DOOM be other than plain "awful"?! Face it, DOOM is a computer game, and there's no way you can turn it into any kind of decent movie. I'd rather be spared the embarrassment of having a movie like that associated with the computer game I am so loyal to. :-b

But unlike Aliens their FX shots and stunts should last more than a few frames.

WERD. Remember the Wing Commander movie?

I don't know what the deal was with the Wing Commander movie... Wing Commander actually had a story that could make a good movie, and the games definitely seemed to have higher production values than the movie. Frankly, whoever was responsible for that movie should be ashamed of themselves for destroying what could have been an excellent franchise. They probably just thought "Hey, it's based off a popular video game, so it will be huge no matter what we do..."

AndrewB: You will play games with blood and guts flying everywhere, but you won't watch a movie with bad words? I don't get it. I mean, swearing isn't required in a movie, but you can't change it unless you're making the movie yourself.
I have noticed in your many posts to the forum and comment threads that you do not use curse words, but I'm sure you are mature enough to watch a movie with some bad words in it and not freak out because it bruised your ears. :)

This is what I've been following in relation to the Doom movie:

Aftershock is right. Wing Commander did have at least some kind of a story. And even still, the movie turned out horrible. There is absolutely no plot to DOOM. Opening doors, searching for keys and switches, and blasting away monsters.. Really now. Hey, remember the MARIO BROS. movie?? Haven't we learned our lesson from that movie? You cannot turn a video game into a movie. It's just a basic law of physics. :-b

Absolutely not. I've watched My Cousin Vinnie. I've watched Speed. I've even watched Casino (although to this day I wish I hadn't) ... Don't get me wrong! Bad words are okay in character, but the thing is, besides the basic words that are often deemed required when in dark red hot lava-like situations, DOOM never had any bad words in it. The space marine never did scream out explicitives while charging at the monsters with a chaingun. The same reason why I refuse to watch the South Park movie. In the TV show, bad words were replaced with loud beep sounds, and that added to humor, really. South Park without beeps is really out of character. So you see, I'm really not a crazy freak extremist against swear words. They're OK in movies and TV shows that are designed for them. When there is a movie on with bad words in it, I don't freak out when I hear them, I just avoid watching the movie altogether.

And another thing. I don't play any games with flying blood and guts. DOOM does not have any flying blood and guts. If you pay attention, they all stay neatly in one little pile. That's another thing. I don't freak out when I see games like Half-Life with flying guts like that. I simply don't buy the game, which I haven't. It's all the same principle with me.. :-b

I use foul language from time to time, but I gotta admire someone that has values and sticks to 'em, and not second guess their moral/ethical decision...but that's just me. :) It shows you got character, so ignore those who would have you conform to their way of thinking.

If you shoot a tropper with the rocket lancher and his splattered corpse sails over the edge of a cliff or something, that's considered flying, I think. Gore is gore, whether it's airborne or not. :)

The space marine never says anything besides grunts of pain and death screams. The text between episodes has some bad words, though not horribly bad.

Out of the original three text messages in Doom...

"Once you beat the big badasses..."
"What the hell is this?"
"...you'll make the bastards sorry..."
"...has had its ass kicked for all time."

The Doom space marine never used explitives, because he was never given the power of speech. Frankly the thought of a battle hardened space marine that wouldn't swear in the face of hellspawn makes me laugh.

I will agree that if Hollywood were to make a Doom movie, they would overdo the swearing, but that's a different issue all together.

And Andrew, what's with the puritanical thing? You say that bad words are okay as long as they are f--king bleeped, like in Southpark? I don't watch Southpark because I fail to see the humor in a bunch of potty-mouthed gradeschoolers, bleeps or not.

And finally, Doom had the best (goriest) blood and guts effects of its time. The reason it didn't have flying gibs was because they hadn't been invented in games yet (besides the fact that most of the time they just look cartoony...)

But in the end, if you don't want to read or hear bad words, that is fully up to you, but don't be upset if the rest of us don't agree, and understand, the more you bring this up, the more people will make fun of you for it...

But you see, they didn't go out of their way to make DOOM look gory. That was way down on their list of priorities. They emphasized on good gameplay, weapons, monsters, levels, sounds, music, et cetera.. Having it all stay in one little pile was the easiest way to do it! Look at Duke3D. They had little particles of blood flying in every-which direction.. They even had a "Warning: Adult Content" sign on the bottom of the screen.. While the gore and adult content didn't bother me, the rest of the game was lower on priority.. While I did thoroughly enjoy the game, I haven't played it months! I keep coming back to Doom.. Now why is that? I haven't bought Half-Life. The newest game I have bought is SimCity 3000. I'm a smart consumer. I don't buy things just because they're new and cool and "the way to go!" ... As much, I don't go to the theatre to watch the hottest new movies! I don't go out of my way to be cool. I use moisturizer soap. I drink green tea. I don't collect Pepsi Points™. You get the idea... :-b

Thanks.. Yeah, really. Some values can be obnoxious if used the wrong way, but I don't force my beliefs on anyone else. That's me, and I'm proud of it.. Again, what does Homer Simpson say that the DOOM storyline screens don't? Simpsons is fine. One of the best shows on TV...

South Park is nothing but shock value. Its purpose is defeated when it comes to people like me, who are hard to shock (just throw a spider at me). Watching "Faces of Death" and blowing away small woodland creatures (and some big ones) doesn't bother me in the least, so why would a bunch of uncouth construction-paper kids "shock" me and trick me into thinking that they are funny? The answer is "they don't". I used to walk past the elementary school one the way to my high school, and let me tell you, real life doesn't bleep out bad words. Hearing little kids swear is probably the most common thing they do, except for maybe shooting each other in the playgrounds.

Anyways, I hate South Park, and MTV, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and most other mainstream garbage available.

I don't play my games because other people like them. I don't watch my movies because they got good reviews. I don't listen to my music because other people do. But I do listen to, watch, and play things that I like, and I don't go out of my way to avoid popular things.

So anyway, I think this all leads to a conclusion... Oh yeah.
If a Doom movie comes out, I will go see it because it's based on my favorite game of all time, despite waht people say. If they all say that it's awful, that's their opinion and I will still go see it for myself. Kind of like the Doom novels. Most people say that the books suck, but I own them and have read them all several times. Anyway, I dunno, I guess I'm rambling here. I just think that there is a difference between not going out of the way to look cool and going out of your way to be too cool for everything.

Hey Andrew, you said Doom is a computer game and couldn't be put into a movie ever? Well I'll sound really dumb here, but Doom had so many things in it that could make it a successful movie. It would go much much farther then the original plot but if they could pull it off and still keep the Doom mood, i would see the movie as soon as it came out. They made movies out of worse games before:) You may think its lame making a movie with one guy defeating a universe of demons but thats what alot of movies are all about now already:) (Stallone, Arnold Swartswhatever, and many more actors) But yeah i would love to see a Doom movie, i think it would be wild, so if you are so loyal to this game Andrew, then don't automatically rule out a movie.. just think about it some more. Im not too sure about the genre though. (Sci-Fi-Horror-Action? )

Well that's what I think anyways..
