what are some good anime recommendations?

Recommended Posts

I do highly advise watch Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and akira asap, both are absolutely amazing. Also I'm I the only one who thinks Samurai Shamploo > Cowboy Bebop?

A list of things i'd recommend:
-Coppelion.

This has to be the first time I've seen Coppelion recommended anywhere. As far as I remember, it was considered one of the worst shows of its season.

I'll recommend Death Parade, which was probably the last show that truly impressed me. I'm getting too old for this shit. :(

This is why the "anime community" is something i'd not want to be associated with.

Everybody already gave you pretty much lots of valid movies and series, i'll add my recommendations:

- 91 days
- Fushigi no umi no Nadia (Secret of the blue water)
- To aru kagaku no railgun / To aru majitsu no index series
- Maria Holic, i found it really hilarious
- Keijo!!!!!!!! for the same reason, even this is not a perfect show at all...

The whole "no plot armor" kinda goes against this, but I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann at all here. It is probably exactly what you mean by "plot armor," but it's still a helluva fun ride with some pretty good emotional moments too. It's easily one of the classics of its genre, and has more hot bloodedness than every Hell level combined.

For something that's just as much fun, a lot more relaxed, but no less ridiculous, I'd have to recommend Star Driver. It may or may not be even worse with its plot armor than Gurren Lagann, depending on how quickly you catch on to certain details, but I'd still recommend it wholeheartedly if you want some laughs, some feels, and a whole bunch of mecha fights. Only thing I'd be careful about, is that it does not like to explain itself so if you're like me you might end up wondering if they forgot several hours of exposition over the course of the series.

For non-shonen stuff, Anohana and Ano Natsu are absolute recommendations. Ano Natsu is a romance deal that's honestly just really solid and has a pretty interesting premise - which the implications of which affect the story pretty heavily - while Anohana is ... just an experience. It's not an experience you want if you averse to tearing up, but it does both tears of sadness and tears of happiness just as well.

Oh, and Konosuba.

Watch Konosuba.

That's not a recommendation, that's an order.

So, I recently watched Perfect Blue and enjoyed it. In general it was a pretty good psychological thriller/horror movie. So it gets my recommendation.

Also, the various incarnations of Getter Robo and Mazinkaiser have been pretty good as well. But, I will warn you both can be pretty cheesy and over the top.

Konosuba is hilarious and awesome. So far I think I've been enjoying the second season even more than the first. I love how endlessly petty everyone is in it.

Konosuba is definitely a great idea if you end up going the lighter route ever. I'm trying to avoid just listing off all my favorites and running, but if you do go the lighter route, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is also an option. Ridiculous on the exterior, but the plot holds strange secrets involving Haruhi. Not deep or dark secrets, really, but I found it fairly interesting, and things are definitely not always as they seem. (Things get weirder as time goes on, but sadly the series has stopped with The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, which as far as the anime goes is one of the strangest settings. To the disappointment of a lot of people, there was a spinoff series based off of a certain event in that film, which I don't think was too bad but it attracted a lot of ire since while it was many things, it wasn't Haruhi Suzumiya S3)

you may want to skip the endless eight though. I mean I watched it but if you're impatient you don't really get too much out of it...

If you like action / horror (which, judging by the fact that you're posting this on a Doom forum, I'm guessing you do), you should definitely give Hellsing Ultimate a go. It's a ten episode OVA series that follows the manga closely, and it has a beautifully dynamic style to boot. The Hellsing TV series kind of sucks, and I don't recommend you watch that, though the music is very good.

While I don't watch a ton of anime, the last show I actually finished was Assassination Classroom, which I thought was a good show for the most part. Unlike a lot of anime TV shows, it does keep a fairly strong focus on the story and the pay-off is pretty good. The comedy element is also done well, and it has the honour of being one of the only anime that has ever made me laugh.

ehh...i don't really like the looks of it, and it just kinda looks stupid in general. as in, not the good kind of stupid, the stupid that tries to make it out to be serious.

Check out Midori and Dead Leaves if you're into ridiculous obscene bs ;)

already seen dead leaves, i loved it :)

isn't midori that one anime that's supposed to be super weird and disturbing?

Yeah Midori is somewhat uncomfortable to watch at times. Again I'm not a big anime guy at all, but I do enjoy searching for the gory stuff from time to time. Tonight I think I'm gonna check out Genocyber

welp, i just finished psycho-pass (season one, cuz everyone says season two sucks)

THANK YOU for recommending this to me, this was a great series! while i do wish there was more, i feel that it's for the best that the series ended in the way it did. the story was great, the sound was great (although i did hear a kicking sound from postal 2 in there...), the visuals were great, the characters were fun, and, shockingly, i actually liked the villain's character. dunno if it's just me, but so many anime villains just seem to be completely evil, with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. makawakadingdong or whatever his name is actually had some redeeming qualities to him. i mean, sure, he was a psychopathic, murderous bastard that should be beaten to a pulp, but at least he realized that the sibyl system didn't work. he realized that, and that's what formed the basis of the show's message.

well, i certainly didn't have very high expectations when i went into the show; boy, was i mistaken. i'm hoping the rest are of the same quality as this one! :)

i just got finished watching steins;gate and welcome to the nhk, and i'm looking for a new series to watch. what are some good anime that i can watch? preferably one that's a bit on the darker side, kinda like madoka magica (thank you essel for having your avatar lead me to watch the show).

also, can it NOT have characters with plot armor or forced romances?

sorry if i'm asking too much, but i just really wanna watch something new, ya know? all suggestion are appreciated!

edit: also i'm thinking of watching k-on or love live, i know they're not dark (they're cutesy and stuff), but are they any good?

I'll also recommend Ping-Pong the Animation as an excellent character drama regardless of whether you like sports shows or not. The art-style is unusual for an anime and many people found it "ugly" but don't let that stop you!

Gunsmith Cats

Yeah I loved this, Gunsmith Cats is awesome and groovylicious. More people need to see it, and with it only being three episodes.
Watch it dubbed my dudes(takes place in America anyway) and bring out the fried chicken + mac & cheese :u
Also check out the Riding Bean OVA for something similar (based off manga of the same author).

Gunsmith Cats is great fun. It's just the right sort of cheesy 90s action goofiness, I wish there was more of the show.

Riding Bean is... it's been a while but I mostly remember disliking it. One of the few details I can recall is that he had a bulletproof headband, which only worked because somehow no one thought to shoot him anywhere else.

Legend of Galactic Heroes. The Anime equivalent of going onto Wikipedia to look up some random information and then before you know it, nine hours have passed and you know every single thing about the Albanian royal family.

DBZ Abridged

already seen it, it was pretty good

alright, i'm dropping baccano.

it was good at first, and the voice-acting for the dub is absolutely incredible, but i dunno...i just got bored with it, ya know? i loved it when i first started watching it, because it was in the 30s, it was about gangsters, and it was so reminiscent of the second level in timesplitters 2... but it's just strayed so far away from that, and it's just kinda gotten boring for me. not that it's a bad show by any means - it isn't. it legit has some of the best english voice acting out there, the imitations of chicago accents of the early 20th century are amazing. but, it's just starting to focus more on the supernatural aspect than on a rivalry between two mafia families. personally, i'd rather see gangster shooting the crap out of eachother.

sorry if this sounds like it should go in blogs (it should), but i kinda just wanna tell you guys who suggested them what i though of them.

For dark themed anime I would recommend the first season of Gunslinger Girl. Its a stand alone thing and you dont need to watch the next season. (Season 2 is on the "Cute girls" Moe side.)

Just recommendations in general:
- 5 Centimeters per Second (My #1 anime)
- Your Lie in April
- JoJo's Bizzare Adventure
- Space Dandy (In English Dub if possible)

It may be 110 episodes but that doesn't matter so much when you're deeply engaged in an epic legend as legendary as Legend of The Galactic Heroes. lol I actually watched the entire thing last month and I marathoned it sorta in about 12.5 days, and finished all the extra stuff a few days ago :u. There may be a lot of characters but you'll remember pretty much every one of them anyway though. Also I think there's going to be a remake of it coming out this year.

EDIT: Actually if you ever watch Code Geass (season 3 announced too) and like that, then you'll most likely also like Legend of The Galactic Heroes even though they're both pretty different :s
