Things about Doom you just found out

Recommended Posts

I blame Zero Wing memes for taking off every zig from Doomguy's hairstyle. They knew what they doing. Removed zig. For great justice.

You can launch vanilla doom with -warp whatever# -skill 0

Yes, zero.

Learned it from Doomwiki 's trivia.

(BTW, I don't actually like Michael Jackson.   Just thought that stuff was funny.)

You can respawn on crispy doom by typing iddqd, if you died while partially invisible, you respawn with the graphical effect, wich will wear out as normal without the powerup effect on the monsters.

I have a pair of shoes, with laces that if pulled correctly, sound like a pitch shifted version of the passive monster sound DSPOSACT.

Today is a good day.

I had no idea what sprite SUPRWEP8.DEH used for its BFG projectile.

Today I learned it's the Arachnotron projectile! I'm sure it was obvious to some but I'd assumed it was a beginning firing state sprite for the BFG ball.

It's for doomworld, but if you reach 1210 posts you get the "doomed member" title.

Does anyone know what's the significance of this particular number?

i think is this:

12= December

10= Day

10 Of December, the birthday of Doom

Yes, that's it. American date format of month first, day second, so 1210 is December 10, the anniversary of Doom's first release (as a downloadable single-episode shareware on some BBS).

How to load pwads in vanilla Doom.

Yeah, I’m a noob. When I initially googled how to run pwads, the first page I found basically told me to use a source port, so I did. I never had a PC until after the era of DOS command prompts, so the normal way of doing it wasn’t intuitive to me.

Hah, yeah, I didn't put the 2 and 2 together here, although American date format never made any sense to me and I keep getting confused every time I see a game release date that starts with a number higher than 12 :D

Some of us are still loading PWADs in source ports the same way as in vanilla Doom. :-)

I'm pretty new to the whole community and game itself, so I'm constantly finding out new things... That said, I just went down the rabbit hole of learning about Eric Harris (Columbine shooter) and his obsession with the game, along with trying out a couple of his own wads. God DAMN that was fascinating

Although his death was not, frankly, a great loss to level design.

Little mechanics I notice around teleporting and player control but haven't figured out before.

The idea came when I was annoyed when monsters teleport (especially when they put annoying monster teleport behind you traps) it seems like they might attack you by the very early frames of the teleport, there is no kind of logic "Oh,. I was teleported, let me assess the information, oh the player is there, maybe I should shoot". There is no sort pause before they start attacking, sometimes I get shot by shotgunners or chaingunners by the very milisecond they start teleporting way before even the teleport animation finishes.

So,. my grievance was, "But I remember when I teleport myself, there was a sort time before I can move the player, I remember my controls stuck for maybe half a second, so that's unfair!". So, I tried to jump into a teleporter and instantly try to move my player and I found out:

1) Player is indeed stuck for a sort amount of time

2) BUT he can shoot instantly the very first frame he teleports. I hold the chaingun fire before entering the teleporter and it went on.

3) Funny enough, with mouselook on GZDoom, while WASD and left/right mouse are frozen, up/down mouselook is not. Usuless but weird, when I frantically move the mouse around just before entering a teleporter.

I wonder if there is a thread with more analysis of the reaction and times as you enter a teleoprter.

for player this is:

// Freeze player for about .5 sec

thing->reactiontime = 18; // ~0.514 seconds

for this time the movement/jumping is blocked. but mouselook is not movement, so it handled differently.

monsters just continue with their states as if nothing happens.

PROTIP: pull the trigger on the BFG before stepping on the teleporter, so that it shoots right after you moved in the new zone. Don't forget that tracers go in the direction you were looking at when you pulled the trigger, and come from you; not the direction you're looking at when the ball explode and they don't come from the ball. Use this knowledge to blast those 6 chaingunners that are waiting just in the back of the teleport destination, ready to perforate you at the exact frame you appear.

This isn't something I just found out but idk when I'd ever get to mention it - when I was 4 watching my dad play Doom 2 (though I thought it was still part of Doom) and he reached the intermission message at the start of the city levels which included the line "You are the only human left on Earth", I thought that meant every single other person on the planet had been killed by the Demons, which... y'know, would've been pretty metal
