System Requirements for PC or Console?

Recommended Posts

My PC (which I bought last year) is a Core i3 8100 with 8Gb of RAM and no graphics card (integrated CPU graphics).

Is my CPU too slow? I was able to play Doom 2016 with less than the minimum CPU spec, but I don't know if I can do it this time.

Also, anyone know what the best budget graphics card would be with this game? Or has the information not been finalised yet?

If my PC is inadequate and I would need major upgrades, then I might just get a console instead, just for this game. PS4?

Lets take Doom 2016's system requirements as a guideline:

Minimum Spec

  • Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit versions only)
  • Intel Core i5-2400 or better / AMD FX-8320 or better
  • 8 GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 (2GB)  / AMD Radeon HD 7870 (2GB) or better
  • 55GB free HDD space
  • Steam account
  • Broadband internet connection

Recommended Spec

  • Windows 7/8.1/10 (64-bit versions only)
  • Intel Core i7-3770 or better / AMD FX-8350 or better
  • 8GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4GB) / AMD Radeon R9 290 (4GB) or better
  • 55GB free HDD space
  • Steam account
  • Broadband internet connection

Eternal will likely raise the CPU bar, but i would not say that by using a Core i3-8100, it becomes literally unplayable. Processor developments are obviously still ongoing. I expect the game to run fine on that CPU, but utilization is likely higher than with Doom 2016.

Information has not finalized yet. However, to use a good budget graphics card, look for a used Radeon R9 280X, A new GTX 1650 or a new Radeon RX5600XT.

I am not sure why you ask PS4, we can't decide what console fits you the best. It is however, on average, that in terms of base hardware, the PS4 does fare better in general, owing much of it because of its more straightforward spec setup.

So the GTX 1650 would be sufficient? I've had a look, and it seems it's at quite a competitive price at the moment. I might save up now to buy one, ready in time for Doom Eternal in March.

You might want to get the Super version of that one.  Or even better the GTX 1660 Ti.

As for the i3 8100, I think that should be enough.  I have an i5-4590 and the i3-8100 is almost the same speed.

As for 8GB RAM, that should be enough.  I have the slower DDR3 RAM while your CPU has the faster DDR4 RAM so you should be good to go.

As for the GPU, I have a GTX 1050 and I was able to get good gameplay but it's only 2GB VRAM so going with the 1650 and its 4GB VRAM would be the best way to go.  Again I strongly urge you to look at the 1650 Super because it is almost the same as the 970/1060 which was the recommended spec for console ports to PC this generation.

I might have pointed you towards Nvidia GPUs but Doom 2016 worked better with the AMD APUs (especially since the XB1 and PS4 use AMD architecture in their systems).

As for consoles and the PS4 as you mentioned, I say go with the PS4 Pro since in an interview the Doom dev said that the PS4 (assuming the base PS4) is being pushed to the max.  I'm not sure Doom Eternal will even run at 1080p on the base PS4.  Rage 2 was able to do 1080p and 60fps on the Pro while the base game was 1080p 30fps at launch.

But you cannot go over 60fps on the consoles unless id software puts that into the game.  My rig of the i5, GTX 1050, and 8GB RAM was able to go over 60 fps and the higher the framerate, the better it feels even if it's on a monitor capped to 60hz.

I have Doom 2016 on both the PC, PS4 Pro, and Switch.

I played Doom 4 on PS4 (standard model, not Pro). It plays pretty well but it really gives the machine a workout! Gets the cooling fans running much more than other games do, which is a sign it's putting everything to use very well. I'm pretty sure it does run at 1080p on a standard PS4, although you can tell it does that thing where it renders like every other pixel each frame and blends them together; the result looks sharp in a still image but performs well in action, so it's fine.

I also have it on PC; mine is more powerful than a PS4, and it runs fine at 1080p60.

To my understanding, the devs are trying to make sure Doom Eternal scales well with relatively low-end machines, so it's likely that if your machine can play Doom 4, it can play Doom Eternal as well.

Dunno why you’d choose a PS4 Pro over the Xbox One X.

not starting a console war, but one is more powerful than the other. Go for the fastest machine, which is the Xbox

It was only a thought, as I am generally a PC gamer but didn't (repeat: didn't) want to upgrade my PC, but now I guess I'll stick with the PC option, as it seems to be cheaper. Besides, the first time and last time I had a console was the original PS back in the 90s, and I was frustrated with how little I could do with it. Sold it less than six months later.

How is the Xbox One X in terms of noise the console makes when in use? Because I remember the Xbox 360 Elite was virtually silent compared to the first model PS3.

My PS4 Pro gets a little noisy when I'm using my 4KTV and less so when I use my 1080 TV, and then the other night I was playing a game on my 360 and I realised it is practically silent except for the faintest, almost inaudible whine that comes from the PSU.

I've saw some people complaining about their PS4s and how they sound like a hoover at times but not saw much about the XB1X. I was thinking of getting one as I still have a few 360 titles that would be nice to play with X enhancements.

Where are you from? GPU prices vary by a considerable margin, where mid-budget cards carry a premium price point.

Which will cost more. The non-Super version should be considerably cheaper given the 1650 Super is a whole different performance bracket compared to other Super variants.

Total heresy i am reading here. What did you expect from it? *

*I have PSX since 1997 and even 23 years later it still works great. The longevity of 90's hardware is in general unmatched.

This. Get 1650-Super instead of 1650. From what I know the super is only about 20$ more expensive (150$ vs 170$) but offers about 30-35% better performance.

But not this. GTX 1660-Super and RX 5600XT offer better performance-to-price ratio than 1660Ti.

Take note as well that official system requirements tend to be slightly exaggerated in the sense that they usually indicate the requirements for specific graphics settings. My previous machine had a Core i5-2430M and GeForce GT540M and I was able to run DOOM '16 on it, albeit at the cost of resolution and graphical shine (though I generally care for solid performance above maxed-out graphics anyway).

Thought about doing the GTX 1660 Super but just left it as it is for someone like you to pick up on.  I think the Supers could be very good for DE.

And if you could get an AMD GPU, I'd say go for it since DE will probably use Vulkan like in the 2016 reboot.  Only drawback is they are more power hungry than Nvidia GPUs.

I'm going to yeet this game at my gt 640, it ran Doom 2016 ok so maybe?

How much VRAM on that one?  I was able to run Doom 2016 using a 1GB GDDR5 GT 730 but we are talking about a new id Tech engine so specs are probably going up.  I hope I'm wrong.

Don't feel too badly since my GTX 1050 has 2GB.  I believe your GPU has 384 CUDA cores just like the GT 730 while mine has 640 CUDA cores.  Not that big of a difference.

Just looked at the Rage 2 and Wolfenstein Youngblood VRAM requirements.  Rage 2 requires 3 and WYB requires 4 to begin with.  At the same time, my old GT 730 could handle Doom 2016 so I think there's a chance and it'd be awesome if the 2GB VRAM GPUs can still run DE.

I pre-ordered the PS4 version of DE today anyway due to being unsure about my GPU.  I'm also waiting on the 7nm Nvidia Ampere GPUs for an upgrade since I think the GTX 1060/1660 will eventually become the RTX 3050 if not GTX 1750.  Plus GPU prices might be higher than usual due to some supply issues and who knows about the coronvirus outbreak impacting production of GPUs and consoles especially the PS5 and XBSX.  Nintendo is saying that the Switch production is already being impacted by that.

Reminds me of my PS3 (Slim model). After a few years it would get seriously loud when playing some games. Turns out the air intakes were clogged with dust and it couldn't breathe. I cleaned those out and it was quiet and happy thereafter. I never let my PS4 get to that point; sometimes you can tell when it's breaking a sweat but it never went into leafblower mode, even in games like Doom 4. So that's my advice if your console is getting noisy.

No issues. My standard Xbox One is a little noisy, but the One X is much better. No issues with noise.

Geeze, i haven't looked at PC parts in a long while. Since when are the i3 processors quad cores? Anyways, i'm still waiting for the official specs to come out to but since they aren't out i just plan on buying it on Xbox One. My XB1 does make a ticking sound though It sounds like its coming from the HDD. It's alway made that sound though, ever since i bought it used. I don't notice any lag or anything in games so it's never been a problem. I mean, browsing the store is slow and Doom 2016 has long loading times but beyond that it seems fine. I am getting worried though. I bought it cheap from an old friend when he bought an S model so it is what it is.

On my PC (at the top of the case to help keep it cool) i have a small case fan that i hooked directly up the the power supply so that means that is running at 100% at all times and boy is that loud. So nobody bitch about a loud console okay haha! I sit right next to my PC too. I had to do it last year as it was getting really hot and with my neck issues it hurts to much for me to really work on my PC so i couldn't tear it down and clean it and install a new CPU cooler.

Back on topic: I don't know much about newer hardware but i suggest looking into some newer GPU's if you can afford them. I've heard that the GTX 1650 is a great middle of the road GPU (not sure on the variants). I personally wouldn't buy a used GPU as i know that there are a lot of ones that were using for mining for sale and you don't want a GPU that was used for mining. You might be able to get away with using that i3 CPU as well but i'm not entirely sure since the official specs haven't been released yet but i wish you luck anyways :)

i3 CPUs have been quad cores since the i3 8100 and the 10th gen i3 will have four cores and eight threads.

One of the rumored reasons for Cyberpunk 2077's delay is the subpar performance of the game on the original Xbox One not the Xbox One S.  I'm considering a Xbox One All Digital just for Phantasy Star Online 2 plus the Xbox Play Anywhere games that I have on the PC.  Would be awesome to do remote play on the phones.  If that is the original Xbox One you have, you might run into some problems with DE.  I would suggest looking at the performance of Rage 2 and Wolfenstein Youngblood as a possible barometer to how DE could perform on that console.

Ah, well that explains why i wouldn't know. The last time i really knew all about the "current" PC parts was when i was building my first PC and that was around when the 4th gen Intels were out. I mean, i did check some stuff out again when the 1st gen Ryzen stuff came out just to see what all the hubbub was.

Yeah, i know that Doom Eternal will probably run at 900p or something like Doom 2016 does on Xbox One but i don't have a 4k TV anyways so it won't bother me any. As long as my Xbox One doesn't die on me i'll be fine ;)

My old PC (which I kept as a backup) had a 2Gb GTX 960 sitting in it that was doing no good for anybody, so I thought I'd transfer it to my current Core i3 8100 PC.

It still works, and Doom 2016 looks great on it, as it did back in the day, but will it be enough for Doom Eternal?

I have read the system requirements, and they say 2Gb as a minimum, so it should be fine, right? I don't know if I'll have to downgrade any of the settings at all?

I know one thing: it'll be better than UHD 630 graphics, that's for sure!

That setup will most definitely not be optimal, and nowhere close the recommended specs, I don't think.

With 2GB of VRAM downgrading some settings, maybe even the resolution, are basically guaranteed in this day and age.

Well, I don't mind downgrading, and it'll most likely serve as a stop-gap until I can get the GTX 1650 Super. It seems that'll take longer than I thought.

Another reason I transferred the old GTX 960 was to be able to play Doom 2016 again, properly, and not try to play it on the UHD 630, which I imagine is shortening the life of my 8100, somehow.

Otherwise, the old GTX 960 would go to waste.

Problem is, with that CPU you will experience a bottleneck, so I don't think it's that good of an idea to buy the card when the CPU is underpowered.

Kind of, it's a bit weirder than that. As long as the CPU can drive the instructions, it really does come down to the GPUs ability to push out the scene. This means it largely depends on what the game's workload is and how it's designed, which nobody here can accurately answer.
