LZDoom vs ZDoom

As i was a low end pc some years ago, (My PC was a dual core, intel G41 Chipset, that's not even Intel HD, 2 gb ram) i can say some differences:


ZDOOM

-It's old as 2005, so if you mind to play older pwads and maps it's will run with not problem, it's uses DirectX9 the last version,  but can be go more lower.
-Some new pwads refuse to launch as don't have some new type of code that GZDOOM have.
-It's got limited options in the graphics desing.

LZDOOM

-It's like GZDOOM, but desing to run on old graphics code, like Directx (Direct 3D), and older Open GL, if you machine run bad open gl as mine was, use DirecT 3D.
-Run's new pwads and maps, as it's like just GZDOOM  but in mind for the low end.
-It's have more graphics options.
-Freeaim it's better than ZDOOM (don0t looks like the ceiling and floor are wraping)

 

Also, as a bonus, Zandromium

-It's a fork of a older GZDOOM, so it's run on a older Open GL option.
-It's run most popular wads because his main focus it's play online, so it's worth to check out with mods like Quake Champions or Meat Grinder.
-It's Multiplayer so it's can run maps with your friend.

In the end, if you want some of the new stuff that GZDOOM have, but you don't run it, use LZDOOM

If you wish to play older stuff but don't like other ports or you are very fond of the zdoom family, you can use without problem ZDOOM.

If you want to frags with friend Zandromium.

Zandronum most of the time, even for singe player, but I may be weird, or I always have multiplayer support in mind with my own work.   Use LZDoom if you want a bit more editing features closer to GZDoom and to play multiplayer "splitscreen" on one computer by networking different instances together.  I'm loving Odamex as a most vanilla port based on older ZDoom, but it doesn't support Decorate or 3D sector transfers or UDMF.   Really nice to load up Odamex and see the old vanilla demos play, while based on ZDoom!   The regular "ZDoom" itself, I haven't used in years since I have all these ports based on it and it's no longer being updated.

I can't assume the user knows the difference. The downloads page at a glance gives a short description of what is different. How is that rude, precisely?

ZDoom does not use DirectX9 in the sense of scene rendering. It does use DirectDraw for the UI, but scene rendering is purely software.

LZDoom does not use Direct3D for hardware accelerated rendering, but it runs the Software Renderer on Direct3D9, its a bit confusing, yes. It only uses D3D9 as an interface, not for actual rendering. Ill list at the end a few ZDoom forks, one of which does include a D3D renderer (that accelerates things.)

Zandronum is based off of GZDoom 1.8.6, so thats roughly OpenGL 1.4.

 

Other legacy oriented ZDoom builds:

drfrag maintains a list of updated ZDoom versions targetting various tiers of legacy hardware. Ill include them below:

  • ZDoom32 has among other things a OpenGL 2.0 renderer, taken from GZDoom 1.9.1.
  • ZDoom LE has a OpenGL 1.2 renderer, taken from GZDoom 1.8.4. Graf did say that GZ never used OpenGL 1.2, but Dr.Frag found out that the renderer works on this level of hardware.
  • ZDoom CL adds in an early Direct3D renderer that was barely documented in ZDoom versions 2.1.7 and 2.2 and adds a OpenGL 1.1 renderer, taken from GZDoom 1.0.17. It can also run on Windows 95.

Basically out of all dr.frag's legacy tiers in terms of GPU support i would use the following performance tiers for clarification because frag adds a lot of features inbetween the various versions:

  • LZDoom (OpenGL 2.0+ and above)
  • ZDoom32 (OpenGL 2.0)
  • ZDoom LE (OpenGL 1.2. I recall it also supports 1.4.)
  • ZDoom CL (OpenGL 1.1 and Direct3D)

Is it because of Open GL issues? I use GZ-Doom on my desktop but Z-Doom on my laptop as the laptop only has support for OPG v1.

I find Z-Doom to be a good way to play Doom.

My AMD comp wouldn't run GZDoom because a shader-linking error in its own drivers.   Someone pointed me to updates for my video and then GZDoom worked.

Use LZdoom. If all else fails, Zdoom can still work for older stuff, but it's been discontinued so you should only use it if LZdoom doesn't run on your computer either.

I think you should use LZDoom. It's more recent and has more functions, it should also support more mods. And I'm pretty sure that you can enable software rendering in LZDoom, am I right? (I'm not sure) So there's no reason to use an older port, unless you like "retro" stuff :b

Yes, LZDoom also has a software renderer, it also has an option to enable truecolor rendering!
