Arrowhead Posted February 4, 2021 I've never once picked a veggie burger over a beef burger when given the option. 0 Share this post Link to post
Horus Posted February 4, 2021 'Imitation meat' is actually worse for your health than the real meat, mainly because it's so processed. So I don't eat Beyond or Impossible burgers, but I do eat actual vegetable burgers. 1 Share this post Link to post
whirledtsar Posted February 4, 2021 Being a vegetarian/vegan is one thing. Eating extremely processed amalgamations that are vaguely similar to meat is another thing. Disgusting concept. 2 Share this post Link to post

DynamiteKaitorn Posted February 4, 2021 NGL veggie burgers are good, though veggie fingers is even better. :D Though I still like my pork and chicken occasionally. :3 0 Share this post Link to post
HQDefault Posted February 4, 2021 I've tasted a couple that are fine. I'd say usually the quality ones are about as good as a standard McDonall. But they're either "quality" or "fucking sawdust that disintegrates in your mouth". And not only is my experience usually the latter, but most of the time when it is the latter, I didn't even know it was a veggie burger. It's like an imposter borglar. 0 Share this post Link to post
esselfortium Posted February 4, 2021 My partner is vegetarian, so we have Impossible and Beyond at home. She's not a fan of black bean burgers (I think they're alright). Impossible and Beyond are both pretty nice in my opinion, Impossible seems more neutral for cooking with (whereas Beyond has a bit of a weird taste in some contexts), but Beyond's hot italian sausages are fantastic for making bolognese with. (It's a kind of meat sauce.) Falafel is also great, absolutely. I've had some good Gardein products, though they've been hit or miss for me. The holiday roasts with stuffing are nice (it's hard to go wrong with stuffing, I suppose), but the beefless beef tips couldn't get the texture or consistency right and were just weird. 1 Share this post Link to post

purist Posted February 4, 2021 They're great, and they are getting better too. Especially the plant protien/soy based burgers like Maes said. I had one for dinner tonight funnily enough. 1 Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted February 4, 2021 I've had one that sucked and one that was pretty damn good. I absolutely love meat but it would be a good idea for sustainability reasons if humans consumed a lot less of it than they do currently. 3 Share this post Link to post
xX_Lol6_Xx Posted February 4, 2021 (edited) Well, I don't know if my opinion counts as I've never tried one. I've tasted veggie lasagna, and it was good. I know it's dumb, but, in MY OPINION, that isn't really a burger. I mean, it can have the shape of one, but I don't feel it's a burger. Again, MY OPINION. I don't have anything with people who eat 'em. I... just... eeeh. But, you know what? I want one right now, let's see if I can change my opinion. 1 Share this post Link to post

NoXion Posted February 4, 2021 Just now, Lol 6 said: I think so, maybe made of rice or something like that The reason I ask is because, if a sausage can be made out veggies, then why not a burger? Both sausages and burgers are largely made of minced/processed meat, just in different forms. I love meat, one of my favourite treats is a steak meal with a pint of dark ale (one of the reasons I sorely miss going to the pub), but I think some other meat lovers can get a bit... I dunno, weirdly possessive about it? Like there was an actual attempt by some European farmers to get terms like "veggie burger" banned in the EU. Thankfully that failed, and I think the EU made the right decision. I don't think there's any chance of anyone getting confused when buying sausages and burgers from the supermarket. For one thing, meat alternatives are marketed differently to the real thing. 2 Share this post Link to post
Doritos420 Posted February 4, 2021 I think it's great if you're vegetarian/vegan, not a huge fan though. Also be careful about thinking that it may be more healthy. I was surprised to learn a lot of veggie burgers surprisingly have more calories than a regular burger. Make sure you check the nutrition info. 0 Share this post Link to post
Chezza Posted February 4, 2021 I haven't really had a veggie burger yet, not brave enough. Well, more accurately a burger is a bit of a rarer treat and to sacrifice a meat treat to try vegetarian is a big ask for me. There is this franchise called the Lord of the Fries. I didn't know at the time they were vegetarian or vegan. I ate a hotdog and it was really soft, odd texture with a strange taste. It gave me the impression it had freezer burn. I then found out it was fake meat, and was concerned I would get sick. Luckily I was ok. 0 Share this post Link to post
DuckReconMajor Posted February 4, 2021 Honestly I like them more than the meat version almost every time I've tried them. I love the fluffy soft texture of tofu and other meat replacements. Bean ones are good too as long as the beans don't take over the other flavors. I've actually gotten weird looks for asking for bacon bits on my Moe's Tofu burrito, which I find funny. Like tofu is just a punishment you get for being vegetarian and that's why you'd get it on a burrito lol. Stuff like the Beyond/Impossible meats at fast food places now are good, but they're more for people who prefer meat, which I'm not. Good example is Chipotle, they managed to make their Sofritas taste just like their meats, which gets a big 'meh' from me. Give me free guac instead. In response to some comments in thread: make no mistake these aren't low-calorie or "health" foods, but at the same time being 'processed' does not make a food bad. There were a lot of good articles written on how Beyond/Impossible got the stink-eye and 'processed' label once they left upper-class establishments and hit Burger King. 1 Share this post Link to post

Rytrik Posted February 5, 2021 (edited) 2 hours ago, NoXion said: Do you think there can be such a thing as a veggie sausage? My initial thought was to say 'no' to veggie sausage. In my mind, sausages are made of meat. However, a look at the sausage wikipedia page corrects me and says that there are vegetarian/vegan sausages. I'll admit, I disagree with their assessment on a deep level. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gokuma Posted February 5, 2021 I eat some meat and the best, most juicy burger I've ever had is Elk. I like Bison too. Black bean burgers are great though. Veggie burgers made of soy are garbage as are the super processed toxic Beyond/Impossible trash. There's two forms of a soy I know of that are alright or good. Good quality soy sauce or tofu made from soy properly fermented to remove the phytoestrogens. Just soy by itself is crap, not a big health food in Asia as food corps depict it, is actually bad for the heart, and 95% of the stuff in the US is GMO. Soy oil, palm oil, and canola oil are the cheapest, worst oils. Demand for Palm contributes to both legal and illegal deforestation which is critically endangering the orangutan. Palm oil also gives a lot of people the shits. You walk into an overpriced Whole Foods (who are disingenuous douchebags who have made some shady deal with Monsanto) and see how many of their products all up and down an isle are loaded with palm oil, but ooooh they reeeeeeally care about the environment and people and animals. 3 Share this post Link to post
Urthar Posted February 5, 2021 I like the Quorn burgers, and the cheesy-chopped-up-veggies-in-breadcrumbs type things. Most Quorn stuff is decent really, though it lacks the complexity of flavour of real meat, so there's no point slow cooking it in a casserole, but it's fine for stir frys. 1 Share this post Link to post
Azuris Posted February 5, 2021 What i've also had were "Chicken Nuggets" and "Chicken Breast" , they handled the taste and structure of the Meat really good, it had Fibers like real Meat. Also Fish Sticks, they were ok, better than the bad Meat ones. Also Kebab and Pulled Pork, those were actually really good. But it seems like on those both it is all about the Spices. Ah and Sausages, those were like real ones. So best: Sausage, Chicken Nugget/Breast 0 Share this post Link to post

Gardein's beefless ground works quite nicely when making taco filling. The texture is not as firm as ground beef, but the taste is pretty good. I've never tried to make it into a patty, like for a hamburger, but I suppose it might work if you use an egg or bread crumbs for binding.
