Considering XDRE a source port could quite reasonably be considered incorrect but it is where nearly all of my Doom time happens, both "playing" and watching demos. So if you're happy to include it:

XDRE: 7

DSDA-Doom: 1

Crispy Doom: 1

And if you would rather not:

DSDA-Doom: 7

Crispy Doom: 2

DSDA Doom - 4

Crispy Doom -3

GZDoom - 2

Picking up on using Woof! more, as well. Also, when's Bobboom coming out?! i want that! new official name for the umapinfo port, maybe...

Glad to see DSDA-Doom getting lots of love these days. That means I don’t need to feel bad about not voting for it even though I love it!

Points given strictly in terms of how often I use them these days! 7 years ago this would have been flipped upside down.. and I’m only using the 3 MP ports because they’re gravely underrepresented in this neck of the Doom woods anyway:

ZDaemon - 4

Zandronum - 3

Odamex - 2

Also I’m guessing vanilla Doom doesn’t count as a port? If it does, I’ll vote on behalf of TotallyNotDoomkidJustSomeOtherGuy with 5 for vanilla and 4 for chocolate :)

GZDoom: 9

This isn't to say I haven't tinkered with some of the others ports. I've tried out prBoom, Eternity, DSDA and EDGE but none of them compare so far in terms of personal comfort, preference, flexibility and need. So far, good ol' GZ simply provides everything I could want out of my Dooming experience. I'm sure I'll grow more adventurous as time goes on... or not. Who knows hehe ;^P

GZdoom=8

PRboom+ =1 if i want good vanilla+ experience.

While on topic: Why so many people prefer Eternity engine. What advantages does it have? compare to gzdoom

Probably because of:
(A) Simplicity Sake
(B) About as purist as you can get without vanilla

(C) It's just a rather nice Port to toy around with

Is this one for "ZDaemon - 4 Zandronum - 3 Odamex - 2"? Don't want to be too presumptuous if you're just generally agreeing with the post.

@INfront95 9 points total rather than each, and @forgettablepyromaniac up to three ports.

Yeah Basically, I've used all of these before and I like them about the same as DK

I saw in heartland there is portals with vanilla like gameplay. It is my main reason to try it out. Gz doom is good. But every player has its own setups and its hard to have visual consistency between players. Best solution is to have port like prboom+ where you have not much to choose from in a way of visual options, but with at least half of the features of gz doom

Eternity runs on any hardware, have awesome Cardboard software renderer, feels amazing to use and play, is faithful to Doom.

GZDoom have unreasonable system requirements and is more like emulator to run WADs in my point of view.

And that PRBoom+ uses one of my favorite soundfonts for FluidSynth

can't you configure that on most ports?

6 pt. - GZDoom/LZDoom: As a Doom gameplay mod enthusiast, these two ports are almost always my go-to when I wanna shoot some demonic dipshits, preferably in the face. Right now I'm currently on a Trailblazer addiction, but sometimes I really wanna play something like Treasure Tech, MetaDoom, FinalDoomer+, and the odd occasional Project Brutality.

2 pt. - Zandronum: Not as capable as GZDoom is, but still quite nice to play around with when I either wanna do some offline skirmishing, or if I wanna play some modded multiplayer Co-op with people on the internet. Plus, there's also the Invasion game-mode, so that's another plus!

1 pt. - Chocolate/Crispy/PrBoom+: I only play these if I really, really feel like it, which is a pretty darned rare case, but they work wonders when playtesting custom maps, especially Choco if I'm making a vanilla-compatible. I know I don't have to adhere to vanilla limits when making levels, since I can just have people use a limit-removing port if I end up going over vanilla limits, but it's more fun pretending like they're ironbound, plus total compatibility with every source port's pretty nice too. As for PrBoom, I mostly only use it to playtest BEX mods and Boom-compatible maps respectively.

I've also heard quite a few good things about the Eternity Engine too, but I'm holding off on scoring yet as I've yet to try/make a proper gameplay mod for that port. (There is the Heartlands, but I wanna try going for a more EternityDECORATE-heavy style) Wouldn't wanna unfairly judge it, after all.

PrBoom+ um - 8

GZDoom - 1

I played vanilla doom 2 in a mac when I was a kid, Doomsday Engine a few years ago when I came back to the game (HD textures and all), then GZDoom when I discovered mods (project brutality, free look, open gl rendering and texture filtering). Finally I regretted my sins and embraced PrBoom+ (I would play in Chocolate Doom but the low resolution gives me headache and the midis doesn't sound so nice to me, so I only use it to test my own maps). I still use GZDoom if the wad requires it, but with autoaim and no freelook, the intended way (?).

@kinker31, could you pick which port you want out of GZ/LZ, and which one out of Chocolate/Crispy/prB+? (I can't split the selections over multiple things that way.)

You can go for GZDoom, LZDoom's just a hardware-compatibility fork of GZDoom.

As for the vanilla-based ones... how about PrBoom+? I'd split the 1 point between the 3, but I'm not sure you'd want fractions/decimals in your final score.

  • Woof! - 4
  • PrBoom+ 2.6um - 3
  • GZDoom - 2

Woof! and PrBoom+ are my got-to's. I'll use GZDoom for wads that specifically require it or when I just feel like messing around with fun mods. Also gotta a bunch of other source ports installed that I'll use every once in a while just because I find them cool - namely Doom Retro, DSDA-Doom, Eternity Engine, K8Vavoom and PsyDoom.

DSDA-Doom - 8

Crispy Doom - 1

I use DSDA-Doom for everything, really, but I do enjoy the occasional Crispy Doom at 35FPS for that cozy and crispy oldschool feel, especially when playing older wads.
