+++ To Occula.

Such a fantastic and tightly crafted little set, suprised to see not much mentions of it! Any wad that has more Tourniquet and Bemused is an instant classic!

John Romero's One Humanity.

Outside of the message it conveys, it appears its also a damn good map.

Elementalism

Okay, now you can nominate it.

Years ago, when Insane Gazebo stepped away from the community, Sunder was left sitting at 14 maps. It was incredible, and has indeed become massively influential, but it never won a Cacoward. Yes, it was eventually named one of the Missed Cacowards in 2018, but Demon of the Well wrote that it never won because it was unfinished.

Elementalism is explicitly incomplete. What was released today is Phase 1. It is only the first 3 worlds. While an absolutely top-shelf piece of work, Elementalism, as it exists in the public space today, is no more than half complete. To be clear, Elementalism is impressive. It's visually stunning, the encounter design is fantastic, and the soundtrack is incredible. If, on December 10th of this year, Elementalism claimed one of the Cacowards, I would have no problem with its inclusion, and I would heartily congratulate Bauul and the rest of the Elementalism team.

I'm just asking why are we hurrying to give an award to Elementalism, which is still only 50% complete (with more to come), while Sunder didn't win a Cacoward in 2010 because it wasn't finished yet?

My personal response to that would be simply to say that any Cacoward would go to ‘Elementalism: Phase 1’ rather than just ‘Elementalism’. It’s not without precedent (IHNI got mentioned last year, and that was Episode 1 only)

There's tons of precedent for awarding projects that were released partially/episodically or in some sort of "not final but reasonably complete" stage. The Adventures of Square Episodes 1 and 2, released years apart, got a Cacoward each, and E3 ain't even a thing yet. BTSX Episodes 1 and 2 are separate wads, so it's easier to consider them two separate projects, but neither of them were finished when they both got their 'wards either (they were both in "public beta" stage). Sunder is the exception, not the rule.

Anyhow, the reply to Scuba's post is a bit of a non-sequitur anyway -- he's joshing at the fact that Elementalism got multiple mentionations before it had any form of public release, which most definitely is too soon to hand out any trophies. :P

Moreover on that topic is that Sunder is very much in active development, and while Gazebo did take a few years of a break, he never released Sunder's first 10 maps as "Sunder: Act 1/Phase 1/Episode 1", etc. It was simply put on hold, and then continued to get publicly updated to this day for each new map. I'm sure Gazebo would only be able to call Sunder completed only after all 32 maps are finished. Of course I can't speak for him or anything like that, but that's the general impression I'm getting from Sunder's periodical release-by-map schedule.

And on that note, my fattest +1 to Elementalism Phase 1. Hands down one of the best Doom experiences I've had in the past decade.

I will also drop another +1 to Don't Turn Your Back On The City, a surprisingly fun and punchy single map that has a lot to offer in just 15-20 minutes of gameplay.

+1 Elementalism

By @Bauul @Bridgeburner56 @Clay @DMPhobos @Dragonfly @Dreadopp @Phade102 @Remmirath @HeavenWraith @HexenMapper @PRIMEVAL @Speedy @Tristan

it was obvious, right ?

I can only say one word, impressive.

I don't know how many times they would have killed me for having been stunned looking at the stage.... xD !!

If this weren't a mapset for DOOM, it would still be incredible simply for being able to go through all the scenaries that make up the mapset.

The architecture and design of the levels is incredible.

As well the music, lighting and the mix of original elements (2D) with 3D elements.

I'm looking forward to seeing all the levels but from what I've seen so far I'm freaking out.

Thank you so much for creating something so amazing.

+1 for POOGERS.wad

An ambitious megawad which has loads of cool ideas and challenges. Some levels are very challenging, but the design of the levels were very good.

Elementalism is explicitly incomplete. What was released today is Phase 1.

It's all a little muddled... but a lot of it is dependent on what the author says. Regarding Sunder, I recall Gazebo leaving everyone with the impression that was he would finish it... but it just ceased production. There was never a definitive time we could point to and say "This was the finished product" because we had no idea that there would be no more progress.

Elementalism on the other hand, as @Bauul has explicity stated, should be viewed as two distinct projects with the first being seen as "Chapter 1." I guess that's the difference; does the author view their work as a "complete" experience.

Blade of Agony is probably a more contentious case... they released new standalone chapters, but always talked about "the final release" and the assumption was always that they were building to something more grand... since torm was always posting updated screenshots featuring upgrades that would be found in the 'final build.' We just decided that, after Episode 1, to consider that award a post-hoc justification for everythign they had accomplished.

I don't understand. it's like people are afraid the project will poof into thin air unless it wins a Cacoward. With the bigwigs involved it would win even if it was a 90s style shovelware map. It will get a Cacoward eventually. What's the hurry? why all this anxiety?

Anyway, +1 for Don't Turn Your Back On The City, best single wad of the year by far.

Kind of presumptuous here. No one said a word about it getting an award, just that now that it had a public release it could be "mentionated" in this thread.

Anyway, 'grats in advance, Bauul and co, on your brief sidebar mention! :P

Stuff I haven't had the time to play yet but that are worthy of mentionatorizing anyway:

  • Infection, by exl. C'm'on, it's exl, creator of Demons of Problematique and Verdant Citadel. Everything he does is exlent.
  • Corrupted Cistern, by Lutz. C'm'on, it's Lutz, creator of P:AR and Crucified Dreams and Icebound and Hellscape. Everything he does is lutzious.
  • Dust Devil, by Captain Toenail. I won't attempt a lame pun on that name, but Toenail makes whimsical, creative, and fun maps. Like Quest for the Crystal Skulls, an underrated Heretic gem. I mean in Dust Devil you've got chaingunners riding around on quadcopter drones, and if that's not enough to sell you on it then I don't know what to tell you.

That's it for today's mentionatifications.
