IronEagle Competition 42: Nex Credo

Recommended Posts

Welcome to a brand new month of the IronEagle competition, the ironman challenge that welcomes all comers, no matter your level of experience and/or skill. As long as you like Doom, and are willing to try it saveless, you're welcome to the come and join our party.

This month, participants will challenge themselves against Nex Credo, a vanilla-compatible 11 map set made by Jay X. Townsend, also known as Doomworld's own @Jayextee. Jay originally set out to make a full 32-map megawad in 2013, but in 2016, decided to releasing the 11 maps that had been finished. Nex Credo is meant to feel as if it would have been at home in the mid-90's, and it tells the story of a lone Marine stranded on Mars, fighting through waves of undead and hellspawn, while trying to find a way to get home. By the way, "Nex Credo" translates to "Faith in Death."

Participants must play these maps on complevel 2 or Doom(strict). There is a dehacked file that must be loaded separately (i.e., it's not included in the wad). This file (nexcredo.deh) changes the map names and the intermission texts, so it's up to you if you want to load it.

Nex Credo starts at Map 01. Survival is finishing Map 11. There are no secret maps or additional maps.

Download Nex Credo.

Congratulations to this month's winners (further details are in the post below).

UV: @mhrz (Runner-up: @Maribo)

HMP: @Crusader No Regret (Runner-up: @LadyMistDragon)

HNTR: @Andromeda (Runner-up: Pegleg)

Spoiler
  • Template for Chocolate:
    • -iwad doom2.wad -file nexcredo.wad -deh nexcredo.deh -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEnexcredo>

  • Template for PRBoom+:
    • -iwad doom2.wad -file nexcredo.wad -deh nexcredo.deh -complevel 2 -skill <x> -warp 01 -record <IEnexcredo>

  • Template for ZDoom:
    • -iwad doom2.wad -file nexcredo.wad -deh nexcredo.deh  +compatmode 2 -skill <x> +map 01 -record <IEnexcredo>
      • it is possible you may have to use +set skill <x> for GZDoom

  • <x> must be replaced by the skill level. 2 = HNTR, 3 = HMP, 4 = UV
  • <IEnexcredo> would be replaced with whatever you decide to call your demo, if you're submitting a demo

Rules:

The rules are basically the same as they have been. Either demos or streams are permissible. If you are creating a demo, post the demo. If you are streaming, post a video of the stream. Even if streaming, you can still submit a demo, if you want to.

The basic rule is that you submit a demo/stream played at a particular difficulty level (HNTR, HMP, or UV) and you play without saving and reloading, ending your run when you die (or survive).

The following are allowed (but not required):

  • Freelook
  • Crosshair
  • Mods that are COSMETIC ONLY

The following are NOT allowed:

  • Crouching
  • Jumping
  • Mods that change ANY aspect of base gameplay, including (but not limited to) enemy behavior, enemy speed, player abilities, player speed, weapon damage, ammo, and enemy drops.

Further, more specific, rules are listed below:

Spoiler

  • Submissions (except for streams, as described below) must include a demo.
    • You may practice a mapset if you want, but these practice runs should not be submitted as your official entry, and your run would be Category 2, unless there are exceptional circumstances (such as described below).
  • A run must be done in a singular sitting with no saves. (With room for breaks. This will be addressed below.)
  • Streams and video runs are accepted provided you post a video of the stream/run or a link to the video.
    • If you post a video of the stream, you may post a demo if you want, but it is not mandatory. You may also post a demo if you, for some reason, do not want to post the video or a link.
  • Secret levels, if present, do not have to be completed for a survival run. If they are completed, they are extra credit.

Any port is accepted provided it will actually run the mapset. There is no preference.

Spoiler

Of course, if you want to try a limit-removing/Boom map in Chocolate Doom, be my guest. However, be aware that your run may be over rather quickly. Don't say you weren't warned.

Category System:

Category 1: Blind run. This explains itself. You have no knowledge of the wad and have not played/seen it before. I'm willing to be somewhat lenient with this Category.

For example, if you die early in Map 01, and then decide to play again for your run, you can still call it Category 1.

Category 2: Non-blind.

If you have played the wad before and/or possess significant foreknowledge, your run is non-blind. Basically, anything that is not Category 1 is Category 2.

If you're unhappy with your blind run, feel free to record a new run, and submit that run instead. (Just don't submit your first run.) If you want to submit your first run, no matter how you perform, by all means, go ahead and do it. You shouldn't feel that you HAVE to submit a run you're dissatisfied with, just to preserve a "Category 1" status. If you want to go back and submit a second run, you're welcome to do so, but, at this time, it won't be counted.

Difficulty System:

You may submit a demo/stream for only one of HNTR, HMP, or UV. Choose only one, because subsequent submissions will be rejected (i.e., if you submit a HMP demo, the HNTR demo you then submit will be rejected). We're not using the 1CC rule set here. And your first submission is what counts.

Only runs from the same difficulty will be pitted against each other. Each difficulty will be graded separately.

Submission:

When you submit your run, please the include the following information:

  • The category (1 or 2)
  • The difficulty
  • Whether you survived and the time of your survival
  • If you didn't survive, which map you died on
  • The port you used (if you included a demo)
  • A link to the stream/video (if you did a stream)

You may include a commentary about the maps or details about them, if you want to. If you do include specific information about the map (e.g. "The demon trap in Map 08 is rough"), please put it in a spoiler, so that people that want a completely blind experience won't be tipped off. In you're just putting in a general comment (e.g., "Pro tip: don't get hit"), then no need for a spoiler.

Attempting to max the maps is not necessary to win.

Ranking for this mapset will be determined by:

  1. Survival
  2. Total time for survival
  3. Map where you died
  4. Time upon entering the map where you died
  5. Total kill count in the map where you died

If you die, please wait a few seconds before quitting.

Breaks:

Everyone gets tired. Sometimes people survive longer than they expected. Nature calls. Every now and then, there are family emergencies. Needing to take a break shouldn't necessarily end a promising run. While you should try to complete the run in a single setting, this isn't always possible. If you have to take a break, try to make it quick.

Happy Dooming!

(growling directed at mapset)  "All right let's go, you and me."

Blind attempt on HMP.  Reduced to gibs on map 10 after roughly 2 and a half hours of survival.  My secret sense seemed to go on vacation with a low rate of finding them in most maps.

DSDA-doom -complevel 2  Not that I expect anyone to watch such a slow paced demo.

I loved it.

Category: 1 (Blind)

Coffees: 2

DEAD: Map05

Difficulty: UV

Port: Prboom-Plus 2.5.1.3 (complevel 2)

Kills: 94/103

Time of Arrival: 16:59

Time of Death: 28:04

Cause of Death:

Those end viles.  I knew there was something up with those Blue Pillars... so I left them up in the first time I saw them, but wasn't rewarded for it.  So then, when I found the second room with them (evidentally parallel wired), I kinda just lowered all of them.  Then by the ending... A double archvile trap is sprung... yah, I guess you needed those pillars? lol.

Cool set tho from what I played.  Thanks, @Jayextee

Among my best decisions, surely.

MAP05, Category 1. prBoom+ 2.5.1.4 -complevel 2, UV, around 22/103 kills at time of death, arrived at 18:27.

Spoiler

To be fair, given how hitscan heavy this set was (and I suck vs hitscanners, usually - see my MAP02 start in Ironman) up to that point, I survived for quite long. Almost died at MAP01; would have been embarrassing. Decided to cowboy the start of MAP05 and it proved it was a misguided decision - I was aware that there are sniper hitscanners due to sound, so my priority was to find cover, but already by the time I created cover any chance of recovering was well past due. Oh well.

Dead on: MAP06

Kills: 31/117

Time: ~28:45 death, ~27:12 Map entrance.

Spoiler

I had not played these maps before, but I read the spoilers in this thread beforehand and jeez... I really doubt I would have survived the exit room fight on Map05 without knowing there was something funky with the blue pillars, so I cannot call this a Cat 1 run in good conscience. This wad isn't bad at all but man, it felt like I had to play Doom like a cover shooter because so many of the corners you would turn would have a bunch of hitscanners waiting.

Starts at around 58:30, category 1 run on UV.

Died on map 5 (93/103 monsters killed) to an Archvile because that kind of "foresight" trap sure is fun to deal with when not conveyed to the player properly.

Honestly, I think most people are expected to run against a wall of sorts with that Cyberdemon. Although the growling Arch-viles is a pretty decent suggestion that it's still a matter of luck whether you survive. So many close calls though. That surprise chaingunner at the end of Map 06 ought to have had me with the way I was firing rockets/

Nobody likes those archviles, and I do apologise profusely for MAP05 -- the idea for those pillars came from me fudging my way around a map in D2TWiD and thinking to myself "I don't even need to know what I'm doing! Just press any switch I see!" and like, mapper-brain kicked in -- what if that was a actually a really bad idea?

I thought it was clever at the time. Turns out y'all love switching switches. ;)

Spoiler

I think it's a good idea, it just needs to be communicated better, like if there were some blue pillars at the beginning of the level or something so the player can press whatever switches they will, come back to the start room, and see that it has consequences. Even better if you weave backtracking to the start room as part of progression.

The way it is, you get to the end room and you see the lowered blue pillars, if you are keen, and you already know you are screwed.

Category 1, UV

Played in DSDA-Doom 0.24.2

Died on MAP05, 93/103 kills, 27:09

Spoiler

Welcome to the "Dead by Archviles" club! At least I got plenty of practice shotgunning revenants, which would have been helpful in the other ironman...

Category 1, HMP, PrBoom+

Dead in MAP05 with 80 kills.

Spoiler

The first two thickets of switches both showed you where the prize was, but the third & final set hid the key from sight, which would mean straws pulled at random until I stumbled upon the correct answer. That was an intimidating prospect, so I did one last round of scrounging, and decided to top up my armor just in case.

...I never even got the chance to guess wrong at the switch puzzle, because the green armor trap got me first. Of course the poison pit choked with corpses seemed dangerous, but I figured that if anything was going to happen, it'd be a rude teleport monster, or at most a spiteful hit from a fast crusher. I certainly didn't expect the floor to give way and trap me in an inescapable pit. That was very mean, but I gotta give style points for how it's set up to keep lowering and lowering for the entire duration it takes to have a full 100/100 slowly bleed off.

The early chapters of Nex Credo had a focus on the low-tier weapons that was pretty charming (I especially liked how Revenants were promoted to scary minibosses in that context), and it thankfully avoided using sloggy bullet-sponge barriers & kept things moving along briskly. I'll definitely be going back to see how things progress in the second half of the episode. Cool pick for this month.

The fiery duo of Torch and Scorch are going to have a lot of corpses for whatever foul ritual they have planned.

Spoiler

Map 5 is still beatable even if one takes the bait and lowers all the pillars.  I was suspicious early on and thought maybe I ought to leave some of them up but won without them anyways.
