Doom Floppydisk 1.1v sell

Recommended Posts

LOL, that price is definitely a *bit* outlandish.

Equally interesting, there was a link on that page to a Redneck Rampage CD in its original packaging (not sealed) for €200. It's also unlikely to be sold.

Those were sold for 0.50 cents to 1 buck tops at the video store where I lived.

Imagine how many games you could get with OP's asking price consisting of countless hours of gameplay or how many poor families out there you could

feed. For some people out there there that's a month's wage, or the minimum they receive for whatever reason just to get by for the rest of the month.

I have found a Doom Floppydisc 1.1v and wanted to share it with you.

What a generosity, thank you. 😂

There's no way that this is actually worth that much money. It seems since the pandemic more and more wishful sellers have popped in to the retro PC game market than ever before. Shareware disc you could get for under 20 bucks are now being sold for hundreds of dollars. There's no way the value and demand for these has gone up so much that the prices would be this high now.

The diskettes are not originals. Someone copied them and printed up labels along the way. You can tell by a couple tell-tales:

1) Id-produced diskettes used glossy-finish labels with rounded corners. Even early registered copies made in the backroom did this.

2) The fonts on the labels are wrong - Also original Doom diskettes used the official stylized "Doom" logo not just a large font. They certainly never used the amateurish "DooM" camel-case these have.

3) Not all diskettes in your set match. Notice the difference in the high-density logo on disk 2 compared to the others.

Original 1.1 release diskettes would look one of two ways, as shown below:

Labels are a bit weird. Every official id release i have seen has the logo on the labels. Box and manual look accurate but I'd be suspicious of the discs themselves. As others have said ludicrously priced regardless.

Edit: @Alex S. Beat me to it, interrupted mid post.

Haha, it's all good! We know our history :)

Yeah my suspicions are that the package and manual are 100% legit and original. The disks, well, they've been copied and labeled at some point. The media is not original.

It's possible the seller is not the ultimate culprit. They may be on selling something they bought earlier thinking it was legitimate. Unless Germany still has a ready supply of floppies i am unaware of.

Oh absolutely agreed. That's what I meant by "at some point" - Seller has nothing to do with it, those disks are old af.

Well according to @Katzimir's thread, Doom was distributed by a couple of companies in Germany. Maybe at some point they had to make their own discs due to not being able to get supply? It's possible. The pics in his thread show English labels with logos, an English box, but a very different looking German language manual. Now obviously many Germans are bilingual so the labels of this "reprint" being in English isn't necessarily indicative of anything but it seems more likely to me a German distributor having to make their own copies would use the German language.

Still not worth the money though, even if legit.

I did not think of this! Good point @Murdoch it may very well have been like you suggest.
