Spoiler

In all seriousness though, your Doomguy looks way cooler.

A vast improvement upon the original.
Something that irked me ever since Doom Eternal came around is that they never seem to get the green color of the classic armor correct.  They make it this weird lime-green color that doesn't fit in with either the OG cover art or the sprites; thankfully, you corrected that.

Looks really awesome. Love the use of actual fabric for the pants and shirt, really elevates the look of the figure. The new arms and hands look way better, what figure did you get those off of?

The arms are part of the new body I gave it, it's a vtoys blank body. I tested it to see, and the arms actually have the same size ball joint as the original arms on the Mcfarlane body, so that means someone could just swap the arms out if they ever wanted to. They might be slightly out of scale, but it is possible.

The hands were from a set of mezco gloved hands I found on blackopstoys.com. They definitely offer a wide range of...interesting expressions, to say the least lol

I might as well go through the process I did when I modded it, so here it is:

Spoiler

Well, the original plan was to shave the plastic around the joints to free up the awful articulation and then give it a new paint job, but let's just say that after getting the figure in hand, that idea wasn't going to work...so, I began taking the entire thing apart to see what my options were.

WKH48SU.png

To my surprise, all of the armor is actually separate pieces. besides the helmet and the foot part of the boots, all of it is made from a soft vinyl like plastic and were only held on by a small dab of glue that came of easily. They didn't mess around on those foot pegs though...I had to get the plastic extremely hot before I could even attempt at pulling them off.

Once I got all the armor parts off, I was left with this sorry excuse.

ekf8uaE.png

I had gotten a new, more articulated replacement body to put the parts on. The only issue was that this new body was much leaner than the parts were designed for. It was actually an easy fix.

I took some thin, one sided adhesive pipe insulation I got from the hardware store and cut some strips out to use for 'filler' where the armor needed it.

Once that was done, the head and feet needed new joints. I bought a cheap dumbbell ball joint kit off amazon and used apoxie sculpt to attach the sockets into the holes in the feet.

Some cracking on the apoxie sculpt appeared after test fitting, but it didn't affect anything. I also did the same for the head too.

The new dumbbell joints were slightly over sized for the socket on the leg, but after warming it up a little they fit right in.

They were also a longer size, so it added some height to the figure.

I also got some cloth clothing for it. Once I got them, it was time to assemble it together.

I wasn't too fond of the color of the clothes. I addressed that later on after finally finding something that resembled the box art  colors. Also chopped off the little neck socket on the Mcfarlane figure, drilled a hole through it and stuck it on the neck.

The shoulder pads and kneepads are attached to the fabric with very thin adhesive velcro.

And there it is. I made a few mistakes, which ate up a load of time to correct, but other than that it went well. Maybe this will help any else out there that's thinking of customizing their's.

Thanks for sharing the process, I may just attempt this. I love McFarlane figures but you absolutely put their Classic Doom Marine to shame with your customizations. Really fantastic work again, keep it up!

Would you ever consider selling one of these?  Now you're making me want to have one lol.

I actually wanted to make a whole squad of Doom marines, like a chaingunner, shotgun guy, plasma rifle guy, etc. but the super limited release Mcfarlane did with these, and me lacking a 3d printer is stopping me from even doing that unfortunately.. if these were readily available I’d definitely consider selling some or even doing some custom marine commissions.

I can post some links to the materials I used if you want, some of them took me a while to track down.

Awesome display of craftsmanship! You really captured the feel of the original Doom marine design putting the Doomslayer

clsssic based design to shame.

Sorry for the wait, just started a new job this week lol

here’s the links:

Spoiler

Green bodysuit

A similar set of hands

A shirt I didn’t use

The body

The ball joints

Special small scale Velcro

And the apoxie sculpt

Couldn’t find the minigun…I found it on ebay when I got it, but the listing isn’t on there anymore unfortunately.

There’s also a pair of long pants under the body suit to add bulk…I’d recommend getting some that don’t have pockets on them lol. The color shouldn’t matter if you’re putting a body suit over it too.

Also, it’s probably best to get the adhesive pipe insulation from an actual hardware store so you can actually see in person how thick it needs to be.

This looks amazing, do you know if this would be possible with the Eternal Doom Slayer figure? This is exactly what i've wanted to do with the Eternal design and the Vtoys body but i never knew if it would be possible.

Well, I wouldn't say impossible, but it would definitely be a major project based off of what I know. I don't own that figure in particular, but from what I can tell is that most, if not all of the armor is solid molded pieces. The advantage that the classic Doomguy figure has is that the armor bits are separate parts that can be removed easily; if the Doom Slayer figure is solid parts, that would mean a lot of work to get them to fit onto the Vtoys body.

This could probably be done by chopping off the armor parts and drilling holes out through them so they can slide over the new body. That would be quite a job though...you'd also have to rework certain pieces so they would fit the size of the Vtoys body. Keep in mind that this specific figure is in scalper hell, so making mistakes would be pretty costly without a backup figure.

There are a few alternatives though:

I've seen some 3d printable Doom Slayer cosplay armor on some 3d model sites and on Etsy that could fit the new body if scaled correctly. But, you would need a printer, the armor model and would have to do a bit of prototyping and paint work.

The most economic alternative would probably be to replace the joints on the figure itself. I've seen some people use things like Figma joints on customs like this before by cutting the old joints out and drilling holes the appropriate size for them to peg into.

My last alternative would probably be to look into the Figma Doom Slayer...The price point isn't too far off from what a custom of this scale might cost to finish, so it's definitely worth looking into if you'd like to avoid possibly damaging the Mcfarlane figure. I made a post on here recently that showcased the figure if you want to check it out.
