The release thread is here: OVERVIEW: Here is another community project with a silly premise for mapping constraints. It's titled "Alphabet Doom", a 32-level megawad for vanilla (limit-removing) Doom 2 where each level must fit within the outline of a letter! For example, Map1 which is the letter A: The first 26 maps will be letters A - Z. Maps 27 and 28 can be anything relevant, such as a number, other symbol, or alternate take on a previous map. Finally, map 29 will be the classic id software logo and map 30 will be the classic Doom logo. It's okay to have decorations outside the letter, but mark all of that as hidden on the automap to keep the map clean, and such areas should generally be off-limits to the player. For example, map03 (the letter C): Spoiler Has areas outside the C: But these are not on the automap and cannot be reached by the player: Mapping Rules Project deadline is March 7 April 7 Soon(TM). Format is Doom 2 (limit-removing) IWAD is DOOM2.WAD. Doom 2 resources only. No additional textures. Source port is any limit-removing. I will test in GZDoom and Crispy. For convenience, please place your map in the correct mapslot in your submitted WAD. Balance for pistol start. Map size is small to medium. An occasional large map is okay. Implement at least medium and hard difficulties. Include all 4 cooperative multiplayer starts. Your map must generally fit within the constraints of your letter/symbol. Decorative areas and non-player-accessible areas can be outside but should be hidden from the automap. An occasional secret can go outside the bounds but required areas should not. Map names will preferably be witty or punny and somehow reference or imply the letter. For example, MAP01 (A) is "Arachnaphobia", and MAP03 (C) is "Cuckoo for Cacodemons". My original idea for MAP26 (feel free to steal it) is "beZZZerk", which would be a melee-heavy map. MAP02 could be called "Son of a" which still implies the letter B. Limit of 2 map submissions per user. I would prefer MAP30 to not be an Icon of Sin map. aRottenKomquat Posted January 7, 2023 (edited) There is no deadline for now, I want to see how far off the ground this gets before doing that. I'd love to have custom music, just wasn't sure if that was possible in vanilla without MAPINFO/etc. To be honest I've found myself so used to GZDoom/UDMF that I don't even know what's possible in vanilla anymore, which was one of the reasons I chose vanilla/limit-removing for this. Needed to get back to basics and unlearn some stuff. I'll probably have a revision for my MAP03 later today. After sleeping on it the second half needs to open up more. There's no specific letter/symbol for 28, so just come up with something that meets the spirit of this project.
