Somniac Posted April 13, 2023 I started on Nihility: Infinite Teeth last night, and I can't believe I only just got around to this. By the time I hit E2M3 I was certain this is just about the best Ultimate Doom wad I've ever seen. Awesome level design that feels like E2, but taken much further into abstraction and sinister atmosphere. The lack of music doesn't hurt it at all, the ambient sounds are really evocative and the dehacked adds a nice new layer of paint in places. Really unique and impressive stuff. 3 Share this post Link to post

continuum.mid Posted April 16, 2023 Just beat Eternal Doom. What a ride that was, super unique WAD. It's got medieval visuals and sci-fi in equal amounts, tons of vanilla Doomcute, and some super clever ideas. Don't know Doom players of 1996 managed maps like No Parking and Excalibur without walkthroughs though. Some of those puzzles are just total BS. I have so many WADs downloaded that I want to play. I'm already a few maps into Nostalgia, Auger:Zenith, replays of both phases of Freedoom, and PUSS IX for the DWMC. I should probably slow down. 2 Share this post Link to post
Bugslide Posted April 16, 2023 (edited) Recently came back to classic doom and rather than jumping between wads a bunch and never finishing any of them, I'm trying to go through them completely, starting with TNT: Evilution. I'm hoping to build all the way up to beating Sunlust using the progression from the "WAD Skill Progression" thread + a few other big name wads like BTSX. So far, at I'm at Map 7: Prison. Evilution feels like it was designed more with continuous play in mind rather than pistol starts, I feel pretty strapped for ammo/weapons at the start of a few of these maps, like Prison. I'm liking it though, Wormhole especially was a lot of fun. Probably going to do SIGIL next. 2 Share this post Link to post
Tony D 666 Posted April 16, 2023 Bloodstain - This WAD deserves more attention. NOVA3 - all of the NOVA series is awesome. I love community projects without gimmicks. Just freedom to do whatever. Machete - pretty cool bite sided maps with some good footwork needed sometimes! JPCP - just started this but looking forward to it! Been putting it off for awhile. 1 Share this post Link to post
Cilian Posted April 16, 2023 I missed my mini-grinds and practicing from when I was playing through rush (I didn't do map12 even with saves btw) so I started playing haste. If rush is the "slaughter for beginners" wad then haste with its smaller and relatively easier maps seems to be a pretty good continuation for trying to get into slaughter though I know that at some point it will get crazy difficult compared to rush. Playing on UV with pistol starts and no saves, so far I beat the first three maps of it. Map 01 took 6 attempts, map 02 took 3 and map 03 took 26 (that's a lot but at least the map is very short, you can get to the final fight in under 3 minutes) 0 Share this post Link to post
D0M0 Posted April 16, 2023 I've been struggling to UV-Max Rush map 12 for a couple weeks now. So I kinda decided to focus on smaller projects. I'm currently playing through YUM.wad which for those who don't know is just a wad that contains 1 small fight per map. The whole experience is challenging but also pretty fun. I've spent hundreds of attempts trying to beat these maps as fast as possible and i've only got 2 more maps to go until i've finished (That's not including map32) 1 Share this post Link to post

Definitely looking to be another top 5 megawad for me, so long as I can finish the remaining maps. 15 hours ago, Tony D 666 said: JPCP - just started this but looking forward to it! RHhe82 Posted April 17, 2023 Aside from month’s DWMC’s Mapping at Warpspeed, I’ve been restarting Scythe 2 (maybe I can get past MAP15 this time), but also Tarnsman’s Projectile Hell. Strange playing in GZDoom or Eternity, especially when weapons and enemies are greatly altered. Love the idea though, and soundtrack of E1M1, real earworm there. 2 Share this post Link to post
Vi3D Posted April 17, 2023 KDiKDiZD and UAC Ultra for me. Getting my ass kicked by a cyberdemon in UACU (I am not good at dodging rockets in enclosed spaces). 2 Share this post Link to post
QuaketallicA Posted April 17, 2023 Is this exclusively for wads? Because I haven't touched Doom in a while. I've been really enjoying Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019) (the rebooted one) Far Cry 5 and the recent Resident Evil 2 remake 0 Share this post Link to post

I recommend it to everyone but sadly, no one ever wants to give it a go. It has some..interesting sound changes, but I’m telling you, I didn’t realize a WAD could invoke so many different feelings. 1 Share this post Link to post

Real interesting an conceptual, even though the gameplay is weird. Auger;Zenith (which, after beating it, is now solidly in my top 3 next to JPCP and Struggle) has engendered in me a love of maps with heavy environmental storytelling, detail, and the sense that they could be real places. So maybe I should give ALT another go. And all the other popular Russian mapsets, really. 1 Share this post Link to post

I think some of the design choices turn people off - just go with it and by the end, you’re gonna be like “what the actual f did I just play”. Some of the maps will…bring you back to other maps you’ve played. I don’t want to say too much and ruin anything but you’ll know what I mean when you get there. Enjoy the ride! 1 Share this post Link to post

I've been playing some of it (ALT) since last week after reading about it. It's truly one of my favourite WADS I've played, but its so weird. Stephen King had a film made of one of his stories called The Langoliers years ago. It was about a group of people boarding a plane who somehow get stuck a day behind the rest of the world. They're out of time, and no-one exists exist them, yet the airport and everything in it is still there. But theres weird things, going on. They notice the date hasn't changed. They and the airport are existing in a temporal space where these time cleaners are coming to eat up the day they're in. All that is to say the concept terrified me as a child and this WAD gave me the exact same weird feelings. Therefore, it is very good. 1 Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted April 20, 2023 (edited) The playthrough I'm the furthest into (aside from the current DWMC WAD) is a replay of Freedoom Phase 1 via the current autobuild. I'm returning to my roots! Freedoom has gotten a lot better in the last four years. Though the Doom 1 fatigue still sets in after a few maps... I'm hoping once I get to Double Impact that inspires me to finish my MIDI pack for it. 1 Share this post Link to post

Toward the end brings you to some familiar places. I’m also familiar w/ the movie. I’m a big horror movie fan! Glad you’re enjoying it! I absolutely loved it - but it is very strange and not for everyone. 2 Share this post Link to post
TheSlipgateStudios Posted April 21, 2023 The 128kb Maps Extravaganza megawad for Ultimate Doom, and Illuminatus for Doom 2 (Started to play Doom 2 wads as well!). 0 Share this post Link to post
PsychEyeball Posted April 22, 2023 I just finished Rush. I felt rusty so I thought I'd measure my skills on what's considered a tame slaughter WAD. Good stuff all around. The last level definitely gave me Sunlust vibes, with the enormous and decrepit setting. Definitely easier though, as I did beat it on UV. 1 Share this post Link to post

continuum.mid Posted April 22, 2023 Just got through the first episode of Solar Struggle, via Freedoom. Played on Crispy Doom, not realizing the text screens and map titles were all in UMAPINFO instead of DEHACKED so they wouldn't show up... but it was a really cool experience nonetheless. If very easy. Gonna have to finish it sometime. 0 Share this post Link to post
Hawk of The Crystals Posted April 22, 2023 I've been replaying Doom 2 recently, and I've started appreciating the odd texture choices, as well as the strange - in my opinion - level design. I've also realized that I prefer 2's soundtrack compared to Ultimate Doom's. 0 Share this post Link to post

Devalaous Posted April 23, 2023 (edited) I set up a 'now playing' tab on Doom Launcher to try and focus myself on certain mapsets, as a reminder of what ive set myself as a goal. Some of these I have already beaten in the past, and are being replayed to track the stats on Doom Launcher My list right now is: Alien Vendetta Hell Revealed Memento Mori II Ancient Aliens 2022 ADO Sigil BF Thud Master Levels (as a 32 Map megawad) Vilecore Winter's Fury 2022 Whitemare 2 Slaughter Until Death Black Hell Infinity Sacrament Icarus Fragport Eternal Doom Community Chest 2 Doom Zero Doom 2: The Way We Remember It DTWID: Lost Episodes Cleimos 2 The majority of these are running custom made quality of life patches (widescreen assets, UMAPINFO, bonus maps integrated into the main set, etc) that I'll probably one day post on DW; motivation to do so is usually pretty low though. 1 Share this post Link to post
continuum.mid Posted April 23, 2023 Found Pagodia by @Egg Boy et al. in the Cacoward honorable mentions for last year. It seemed to check all my boxes: Well defined unique aesthetic (lots of purples and greys and Japanese text) A sci-fi edge to said aesthetic Medium difficulty combat that emphasizes movement - "run and gun" Vanilla-compatible! And indeed, I am having a ton of fun with it. I may need to play more Squonker Team WADs - Moonlit District seems especially compelling given it's Perdition's Gate theme. But damn is my backlog getting long. 0 Share this post Link to post
Egyptian Guardian Posted April 23, 2023 Currently on my second playthrough of the mod Arcane Dimensions for Quake since they released 4 new levels in the latest update and I couldn't finish all of them because it was somewhat incompatible with the darkplaces engine XD. I won't play it with the official soundtrack though because that NIN composition is unnerving as hell. 0 Share this post Link to post
