What Video Game Are You Currently Playing?

Recommended Posts

oh no i'm playing the "king's field but third person and with dodgerolls" games once again (i'll have to dig the ps3 back out the predecessor, "shadow tower abyss without guns and also third person+dodgeroll"). AND, this time, i'm enjoying them?!?!?! mad because bad?? couldnt be me. laughin all the way to the bank. they're just silly, dark fantasy benny hill. put my replay of eternal ring aside for these, and it BETTER be worth it.

this in mind, i am hoping against hope that armored core 6 will be a proper return to form for the old pig feeding software company. i can't help but feel they got a bit too lost in the dodgeroll sauce in the past decade. i need goofy shit again like cookie and cream, metal wolf chaos or evergrace, not dodgeroll skyrim part 2.

The 7th Saga.

As some of you may or may not know, this game is notorious for its nightmarish difficulty... the Japanese release (where it was known as Elnard), was regarded to be much easier compared to 7th Saga.

For some reason, when 7th Saga was localized, the devs must have thought the game was too easy, and decided to make it a 'hard-type' game.

Unless you're a masochist, an IPS patch for 7th Saga to restore Elnard's difficulty level is not just recommended; it's mandatory.

Resident Evil 3 REmake in Hardcore mode. I have actually beaten it previously in Inferno mode, but this time I'm going through the hard difficulties without using any bonus items (hip pouches, stat boosting coins, infinite ammo weapons, etc.) for an extra challenge.

Ah i have seen that game on game sack, it is really strange to me how they can mess up promising games like that

I mean, games that ended up in the rental, ok, there is a logic behind to make them harder and squeeze out some coins, but RPGs?

I agree, we are in a time where something as romhacking.net exists, Everdrives and Emulators for nearly everything.

So patch Games good again haha

Still waiting for a good uncensored Mortal Mombat on the Super Nintendo ( i like the Sound on it :> )

So to the Topic,

i am on Vacations on Mallorca, tomorrow is my last Day and my Wife and Son are sleeping.

So i am chilling with a Piña Colada playing Diablo via Devilution on Nightmare.

I am trying on doing it on Hell sometime this Year for the first Time.

I am afraid haha

Sweet! Another RPG to add to my list.

Which romhack do you recommend?

@Rudolph If you want to reserve your sanity without resorting to cheats, I'd suggest Joehiyo's Elnard Level-up Bonus hack, which can (optionally) be used with Shatai's Easier 7th Saga hack. Both can be found on romhacking.net.

Oh no, really? I was actually looking forward to playing this one - at least, back when it was called "Hell Hunt" or something. :(

I played Milk Outside a Bag of Milk Outside a Bag of Milk, which I didn't quite like as much as the first game, but the art direction and writing is all there, definitely worth playing if you're into character studies in games.

Doom Eternal on the Switch, had to get it as an insane Port.

I am really surprised that their Loading Technique is also working on the Switch, the Game loads super Quick for that System.

Played it first on portable Mode and you could really see that is quality Wise muddy.

A surprise was, that it looks not as bad as expected on the TV, i would even call it good.

Yeah, the Textures are turned down, but it is totally ok.

FPS drops weren't as feelable, only in Cutscenes in portable Mode, have to some on TV yet.

I somehow have the Feeling that the Monsters are getting more into Infights where none was on the PC and that they somstimes get stuck.

And how can anyone sane play that Game with a Controller?

I am also very glad that they implemented different Control Schemes, some that do not use L3 for the Punch!

I hate L3/R3, they will kill your Stick.

Overall, i would say i can recommend it, you can have much Fun with that Version.

I mean, an internet opinion means nothing, tastes are highly subjective, you might actually really like it. I just don't care for the way it handles movement, you're not that fast and your dash is on a cooldown, the slo-mo mechanic is meant to compensate for this further but a lot of the time isn't necessary until it suddenly is, the upgrades feel tacked on yet are necessitated to be re-spec'd eventually due to difficulty spikes, none of the weapons are particularly satisfying to use except perhaps the revolver and are lacking in power, and some enemies and the hell knight boss in particular are just flat out annoying either because they find a way to hit you despite your best efforts or do way more damage than feels appropriate. I'm on normal as well and while it started out overly easy I'm glad I didn't switch it. Also don't care for most of the aesthetic as it comes off as being extremely derivative, at least until after the hell knight fight then it suddenly changes themes from Qusk (Quake and Dusk) to something more different and interesting to look at. Level design does seem to improve after the first episode also. Music is somewhat repetitive though there are some standout tracks.

I decided to give "The Forest" a try during the recent Steam sales for some solo survival/crafting horror, and wow. Surprised how long I've slept on this. Several degrees of messed up - YUM.

I finally finished Wolfenstein 2, and it took me about a month to get from BJ getting his head cut off to finishing the game. And most of that time was just slogging through Venus off and on, because it gets so incredibly boring and tedious. I can't recommend that game at all, it took all the life out of the series. The New Order was enjoyable because we hadn't seen a new Wolfenstein game in 5 years, and it was really enjoyable to get back to killing Nazis. 2009 was enjoyable because it was made by Raven, and they really went all in on the Occult and netherworld themes. It had it's problems with pacing, it fell victim to regenerating health and enemies, but overall it wasn't a bad game.

TNC was just, boring, every Nazi was just a chore to fight unless you snuck around and popped them in the head. If you actually triggered the alarm you would have to pull out heavy weapons and go guns blazing, but the guns didn't really feel satisfying to use. Once I got the marksman upgrade and the armor piercing upgrades for the rifle, I just went with dual wielding them and tapping the left and right mouse buttons at the same time and head shotting everyone. Occasionally I would use the laser kraftwerk in my right hand if there were robots.

And most of the enemies had armor all over their bodies, and it was just tapping the mouse buttons over and over again until they fell down, and you picked up some health and armor kits, replenished your ammo, and went onto the next generic group of people running towards you. It felt like fighting robots the entire time, and I realize that Machine Games made Hard Reset, and that wasn't a bad game. But it seemed like they really took the killing robots gameplay roots and ran with it, because the enemies in Wolfenstein 2 felt like robots. The AI was almost non-existent, I could pop my head up five feet away from someone multiple times and they would just stare at me. Anyway, ultimately it just felt like a very lackluster game. I highly doubt I'm going to buy another Wolfenstein game for the foreseeable future.

I also thought it was really amusing that you can find an E-Post log from General Engel on the Ausmerzer where she tells an officer that she's going to be appearing on "The Jimmy Carter" show tomorrow. The fake TV show host's name in the game is Jimmy Carver, which I would assume was a play on Johnny Carson, and Jimmy Carver is used in every other log or reference in the game, but for some reason that typo is still present six years after release.

So now I'm figuring out what I'm going to play next. I did start playing through Super Mario RPG again a few days ago, it's been quite some time since I played it. It's enjoyable and relaxing, so I'm probably going to give it my attention for the foreseeable future. At least it doesn't irritate me like Wolfenstein 2 did.

@Jello I thought Hard Reset was Flying Wild Hog? The Shadow Warrior reboot team.

I could never finish New Order, despite trying several times. That game is just so mixed for me. It can be amazing for a little while and then become so frustratingly bad in its design and difficulty that I don't understand how they didn't take the criticisms of TNO to heart when making TNC, if anything they just made it harder. And then there's the side game with the BJ twins that did so poorly it's put off a real Wolfenstein III for ages. Not sure if I'd even care at this point, not interested in TNC for a multitude of reasons, just wish they'd hand the IP over to another dev at this point, no one else got to work on several games in a row since id themselves.

After discovery that you can enable the use of dual stick for controllers using a .cfg, I decided to replay Half-Life 1 with controller (using the joystick.cfg for the sticks, and Steam input for the buttons and triggers)

220px-Half-Life_Cover_Art.jpg

Surprisingly, it plays very well and it doesn't feel awkward. Also, Steam Input is a blessing, is the best keyboard to controller mapper I've ever used. As a side note, Fable TLC plays pretty well with it.

No, like @Lila Feuer pointed out, Hard Reset was made by Polish studio Flying Wild Hog, who is also behind the Shadow Warrior reboot.

MachineGames is a Swedish studio founded by ex-Starbreeze developers. Now, to be fair, I also initially thought that it was Polish because of the inclusion of Polish characters as well as Poland serving as a setting for a couple levels.

Replaying the 16-bit Sonic games via source ports. Been playing these games since the very first day they came out. The only official collection out now is subpar so fan ports and decompilations are the way.

How subpar are we talking about here?

I'm referring to Sonic Origins, the only collection you can legally buy in this day and age. It has always-on bilinear filtering that you can't disable (on pixel art, whyyyyyyy), input lag, inaccurate physics, bugs that were never present in the original games, some iconic music replaced due to legal reasons. They're not unplayable or anything and most of the issues are only obvious to someone like me who's been playing these games for 30 years, but if you have a PC you'll have a much better, more accurate experience playing source ports and/or decomps.

Watchdogs 2 and Assassin's Creed: Syndicate. I've realised that I've been playing FIFA and GTA V for too long, and have forgotten what a game with actual missions and a plot feels like, so have started playing games that I have the time to get fully into.

Yeah you're right, Flying Wild Hog was the Shadow Warrior reboot team. Which honestly, I loved what they did with the franchise for the most part. I'm not sure why I got them mixed up with Machine, it seems like around that time there were plenty of studios getting absorbed into other companies.

So yeah, that was my bad. They had nothing to do with Wolfenstein, and I don't want to besmirch their accomplishments. Machine Games, on the other hand, had a pretty good hit with The New Order, and The Old Blood released a year later was great. But yeah, it lost me at TNC, and I'm not going to play The Young Blood, because it looks like a co-op oriented slough through numbers going up. It might not be that terrible, but I don't trust them.

Anyway! So since I got through TNC I had been playing some Super Mario RPG, and it's still as whimsical and enjoyable as ever. Everything is just so cute, until it gets creepy.

However, I did check out CV-11's page yesterday, and I noticed he had a video up for Soldier of Fortune!

This game is so close to my heart, and I'm amazed that CV never played it before, it seems like it would be right up his alley.

It's a Raven Game, and it's an FPS. It should've been a no brainer. It's a perfect example of the mid-to-late 90's ultra gore coupled with pretty good level design. And the weapon design, function, and sounds are just fantastic. So yeah, I'm going to finish Soldier of Fortune, and then probably go through SOF-2, which I thought was better. It was far more janky, much slower, but it still felt fantastic to play.

Cruelty Squad.  Holy crap, this game rules, which I'd have never expected from a one-man indie thing praised by a lot of hipster sources!

Back here again, ha ha.

Just finished playing Disco Elysium, took ages but it's done. I highly recommend it, it's such a unique game and there's so much I enjoyed with it. Tbh, I was kinda sad to see it end... Now to find something else to be my main, story based game. I got The Outer Wilds and The Return of the Obra Dinn from the steam sale recently, so I'll probably go to either one of those.

Aside from main games, I also tried OneShot recently, played a bit of that then sidelined it for a bit. Will probably get back to that at some point. Plus I started playing Cult of the Lamb, I'm kinda mixed on the combat, but the gameplay loop of the cult management is fun. Also, it has a fishing minigame, that is the sign of an absolute classic.

Yeah, overall I have played some good stuff, my management of current games is getting better so I try to beat things before moving to the next thing.

I feel like I type more in this thread than a lot of other people, but I'm quite passionate about game stuff.

The Return of the Obra Dinn

I quite liked that one. Unlike Papers, Please, there is no time limit or even any sort of game over, so you can take your time to piece out the story.

Papers Please is a very good game but I just couldn't beat all of it. The gameplay is just so stressful and anxiety inducing, which, yeah that's probably intentional. Love the setting and the style though. Maybe I'll give it another shot in the future. GLORY TO ARSTOTZKA!

Fired up Star Wars: TIE Fighter last night for the first time in who knows how long. Still so good! I've also seen that there's a remake out, as a mod which runs in X-Wing Alliance, really looking forward to giving that a try.
