Wad/Map Difficulty Scaling

Recommended Posts

Update:

Added 4 new wad:

1. 3 Heures d'agonie

2. Confinement 512

3. Perdition's Gate

4. CRESTFALLEN

Here is a bunch of stuff with short maps (except 3 Heures d'agonie map 29, that one wasn't short  at all). All of these have been on my to do list for some time, so I decided to quickly do them all. Also, no link to Perdition's Gate, since it was a commercial wad, despite not being official.

Update:

Added 3 new wads:

1. No Rest for the Living

2. Back to Saturn X Episode 1

3. Deathless

Decided to do 3 more official add-ons. Deathless and No Rest for the Living were a breeze (maybe except for the out of nowhere rocket jump in Deathless). BtSX on the other hand... It's not even that hard, but when it just hits you with same 20-40 minutes long techbase with 20-50 revenants and 3-7 arch-viles over and over, it gets really exhausting.

As for the rest of official add-ons. Earthless is ufinished, so that has to wait. I'll do Revolution this season, since it's another easy breather. I don't know much about REKKR and Harmony but TCs are usually not that hard, saving them for season 3. No End in Sight would be though but at least it's for The Ultimate Doom, so another season 3 wad. Arrival is just Syringe with twice the levels, doable. Oh, and BtSX 2... with levels twice as long as BtSX 1... and now freely using cyberdemons...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

4. H2H Xmas

5. Nostalgia

6. Switcheroom II

7. Xmas Doom

Added full game completion to Doom Christmas 2016

Added full game completion to Xmas Doom

Reconsidered some of the map rankings:

Black Tower from Master Levels goes from 3 to 3.5

Trapped on titan from Master levels goes from 3 to 3.5

Mephisto’s Maosoleum from Master levels goes from 3 to 3.5

Cacophony from 1 Monster Megawad goes from 4.5 to 5 and goes up the top 100

Changed some outdated descriptions (HELLRUN is no longer the second hardest 90s wad I've played and etc.) and fixed some grammar.

This is a big one. I expected DBP 2 to be as annoying as DBP 1, but turns out it's both way better and way easier, so it was a breeze.

Doom Christmas 2016 is an interesting story. I've originally stumbled upon a let's play of it back in the previous year, but the link under a video didn't work, sadly I couldn't find it back then. Then this year I, while looking for videos of Xmas Doom and H2H Xmas, somehow stumbled upon another video of this wad, but with a link that actually works. Then I found that video from the previous year, and the link under it was to the same site, turns out the site was just offline, when I was trying to find the wad in the previous year. I consider it the Christmas miracle that I somehow found the wad.

Frozen Time was also on my to do list since the previous year, I guess, I was too tired to do a very long map that ends in a double cyberdemon fight back then, but now it's no problem to me.

Nostalgia was one of the most popular wads of this year, so I decided to quickly do it, since it's wasn't that hard, besides a couple levels.

Xmas Doom was a thing. I only played it, because H2H Xmas is a sequel to it.

H2H Xmas is the most interesting wad out of these. Somehow, the project lead of Xmas Doom teamed up with H2H gaming community and they made this. Most of the maps are either random death match maps remade into single player christmas levels or maps from some hard maps competition remade into christmas levels. Despite that, most of the maps here are good and feel very unique to play. Also, nearly every Christmas themed Doom wad borrows at least something from H2H Xmas. As for H2H themselves, from what I understand, the whole thing kind of fell apart not long after the end of 1995, and for most of them, it was their last Doom related work, which is kind of sad.

Switcheroom II is the longest wad I've played so far. I thought it would be a 32 map wad slightly harder than Doom II, like the how the first Switcheroom was slightly harder than Ultimate Doom, but instead got a 55 map marathon harder than Plutonia. Reading the text files and looking at the maps, it clearly looks like this wad been through some development hell. Over 6 years of development and 23 scrapped maps, that they decided to still include as a bonus, later it's a decent wad with weird difficulty spikes. As for The Forgotten Maps, let's just say, most of them were forgotten for a reason. Also, how this wad didn't win 2021 Mordeth award?

Thaw was a lot of work to do, I'm kind of burned out right now and probably won't play Doom until mid-january, maybe even february.

Merry upcoming Christmas, happy upcoming new year and whatever else you'll celebrate!

Update:

- Added Scythe 2

- Added full episode completion to No Sleep for the Dead.

- Added Episode 1 completion to Deathless.

- Added Episode 4 completion to The Ultimate Doom

- Added full game completion to Area 51

Reconsidered some of the map rankings:

- Dire Prayers from Deathless goes down from 4 to 2

- Caribbean from TNT Evilution goes up from 3 to 3.5

- Toxin Refinery Remake goes up from 2.5 to 3

- Punisher goes up from 3 to 3.5

- Bloodbath from Icarus goes up from 2.5 to 3

- fixed some grammar and improved some wad descriptions

Rule change:

- added new rule: in maps with multiple exits, taking either exit is ok, unless the wad is continuous only. That's why Dire Prayers from Deathless dropped down from very hard to normal. And yes, Scythe 2 map 31 is the reason for this rule.

- removed the semi-rules about me pointing out if a map is way easier or harder in continuous or when not going for 100%, since I wasn't following them anyway for over a year now, and in some maps/wads it gets really complicated.

Scythe 2 was definitely something, it was the hardest wad for me to do so far, 9 crazy maps in a row was an experience. I've done multiple maps that are harder than anything in Scythe 2, but I didn't beat them in a row. NoSp is a harder wad overall, but I was doing that one in a span of 3 months on and off, and wasn't really expecting to actually beat it, until only one map remained.

Scythe 2 also forced me to rethink a lot of things, fitting for a wad, that basically changed doom mapping. It also put into perspective, how crazy it was for me to beat Fire and Ice from the first Scythe for my first ever update, that map is still in the top 10 hardest I've beaten.

As a side note:

Map 29 DUST TO DUST at first looked like one of the top 3 hardest, but then I figured out some good strats for it. Get the afrit stuck in the first room. Skip going for the yellow key, just jump into the well, to get the secret SSG and supercharge, then grab the ammo and run past the room with imps that leads to the yellow key and get out. The yellow key is useless; you can walk over the yellow bars from both sides.

BFG the evil marine, deal with the first afrit and the arch-vile, then deal with the second afrit. Do not open the green armor secret until one of the afrits is dead, otherwise you’ll have to deal with both of them at once. With good ammo management you’ll have enough to deal with the arch-vile guarding the switch.

When you get to the cyberdemon, do not fight him, lure him to the well area and then run upstairs, get him to infight with the spiderdemon later.

After dealing with everything else on the map, clean the remaining enemies in the well, you should have more than enough health to tank the damaging floor there.

Now that I'm done with Scythe 2, I will take another small break.

Update:

- Added 3 new wads:

1. All Hell is Breaking Loose

2. Cleimos 2

3. Kick Attack!

Reconsidered some of the map rankings

- Station Beta from 2002 a Doom Odyssey goes up from 3 to 3.5

I got a new job and decided to play a little bit of Doom, before it starts. This is also the first update, where no new map made it into top 100 hardest. The Cleansing from Cleimos 2 almost did, it even gave me flashbacks to Scythe 2's low ammo maps, but thankfully, it didn't force me to chainsaw afrits and evil marines.

Speaking of evil marines, a weaker version of them appears in All Hell is Breaking loose, alongside a two stronger versions of chaingunners and other op enemies. But the levels in that wad are on the smaller side and most of the time you are given op weapons to deal with them.

Also, Kick Attack! It sounded way more interesting than it actually is. It's just a typical decent map with new sprites and too much new sounds.

The next update will be, I have no idea when.

1. 10 Sectors

2. Zone 400

- Reconsidered some of the map rankings:

The Factory from Doom 2 Redux goes up from 3 to 3.5

That was definitely something. Both wads turned out to be way harder than I expected. 10 Sectors map 16 was especially unexpected, in the year 2000 it probably was in top 10 hardest maps ever, if not top 5. Whether it was unintentionally sadistic due to lack of testing or intentionally sadistic because people complained that the author's other maps are too easy, I have no idea. Next update definitely shouldn't give me any trouble, I hope.

2. Phobos Revisited

- Reconsidered some of the map rankings:

Halls of Ebola from 2002 A Doom Odyssey goes up from 2.5 to 3

Disreputable Stronghold from 2002 A Doom Odyssey goes up from 2.5 to 3

I've been constantly running into maps that give very little health and especially ammo this entire year, so I decided to go for the stingiest map of them all. The Mucus Flow was definitely an experience. It wasn't as hard as I was expecting, but it still is one of the hardest maps so far. I guess, all those other low on resources maps prepared me for this, especially Cleimos 2 maps 5 and 25, and Scythe 2 map 26. As a side note, it seems that everyone uses a different route on The Mucus Flow, so if you'll go for it, try to find a route that suits you, since it's a very non-linear map.

Do you think that you've improved enough that you might be able to tackle maps rated 8 at this point?

Maybe? Honestly, I am not planning on taking any tier 8 maps anytime soon. Nothing left in season 2 even comes close, as far as I'm aware. I have already planned out most of season 3 and it will be more focused on completing popular megawads and series I have started already, rather than going for Ultra Hard stuff, it will probably have less 7s than season 2. I'm planning to take on Sunlust in season 4, maybe map 28 or 30 from that wad is an 8, but probably not. At the end of season 4 I will also take on a certain sadistic map 29 that I have a lot to say about, but I'm not sure if it will be a tier 8 either. In season 5 I will definitely go for 8s, but that would be in like year 2027 at best.

I also can't play as much as I did in 2021/2022 since I now got a job. So, a non-stop week long grind to beat new hardest map isn't an option right now.

Of course, there is always a chance, that I would randomly decide to play some super obscure wad and unexpectedly run into a tier 8 map, because that's somehow how I got both my first 7 and my first 7.5.

I was going to say that, based on what you have completed already and your comments on it, Sunlust should be doable for you.

Although I wonder if you could try the first few maps of Sunder and save the really hard ones for later?

Update:

Added 2 new wads:

1. 100 Lines

2. Doom 2 the Way id Did

100 Lines was crazy, the traditional half is mostly just typical small maps, but the non-traditional half is in the top 3 hardest wads I've played, mostly because it breaks the tradition of giving you cover. Map 5: Hyperborean in particular is easily the most sadistic level I've played so far, but it's cruelty was its greatest downfall, as this map pissed me off so much, that I just played it almost non-stop for a day, until I finally done with it.

Doom 2 the Way id Did was very fun, but the amount of homages to maps 20 and 29 of the original Doom II became really annoying towards the end, these take literally half the hell episode. Map 33 is a thing. I, honestly, thought at first, that it's impossible to max. This map was just that tight on ammo, and, as far as I'm aware, there isn't any footage of it being maxed from pistol start.

This update was supposed to be a breather after Community Chest 2, but I somehow stumbled upon a map harder than The Mucus Flow and 6 other entries into my top 100 hardest.

Thanks! While I became surprisingly good at beating some of the high tier-ish stuff, I'm not even remotely ready to take on Okuplok. Coincident, who is like 1000 times better than me, spent monts studying and practising every fight in Okuplok and was just barely able to beat it on ITYTD, and he's still not confident at beating it on UV. Me beating Okuplok right now is completely out of the question.

^Yeah, understandable.  For me those really big slaughtermaps are cool to look at, but not really something I want to do.

Season 2 final update:

Added Plutonia 2

- Fixed some grammar

Here comes the most requested wad of them all (except, maybe Sunder, but I'm not doing that anytime soon).

Overall maps beaten this season - 1082!

Top 10 Hardest Maps of Season 2 and My Further Thoughts on Them:

Spoiler

10. Afterlife from Hell Revealed by Yonatan Donner and Haggay Niv. This might actually be the hardest Doom level from the 90s. I can’t imagine what it would have been like to stumble onto a map like this back in 1997. A massive slaughtermap with no BFG, no Plasma rifle and no rocket launcher (until you’ve basically beaten the level) is something that even people from today would struggle with (I definitely struggled with it). And it’s not like this map would have been easy, if it had these weapons.

This seems to be the only map in HR, on which both the authors worked together and it’s definitely their magnum opus in terms of visuals. If there is a harder map from the 90s, I have no idea, where to even look for it.

9. FORGOTTEN CITY from Scythe 2 by Eric Alm. Here comes the first map on the list from Scythe 2 and, unfortunately, it’s not a good one. This is easily my least favorite map in Scythe 2, the last thing this wad needed is an RNG fest in the middle of its last third.

8. DEATH from Scythe 2 by Eric Alm. If there is a theme of season 2, it’s the very strict resource conservation maps: Hexsoil from Doom 2 the Way id Did, The Cleansing and Well of Fire from Cleimos 2, Scythe 2’s other resource conservation map – THE GARDEN BASE II, Serenity Forever from SERENITY II, Wolfencity from Switcheroom II and more. DEATH is an experience, it’s a map that makes even people who play with saves and don’t go for all kills quit.

7. WHISPERING WINDS from Scythe 2 by Eric Alm. Here’s Scythe 2’s equivalent to Scythe 1’s Fire and Ice, at least this one is shorter. This the hardest “standard” Doom map of this season (as standard as a map that uses deathmatch bots as normal enemies can be). The rest of the entries on the list get more bizarre and gimmicky. I don’t really have more to say about Scythe 2, since I have already talked a lot about it in both its entry and update post when I added it.

6. The Citadel from NoReason’s Speedmaps by NoReason. Here is a map from a wad, I have a lot more to say about, unfortunately not for this map specifically. The Citadel throws hitscanners and cyberdemons at you, while giving you no health, it’s very simple and very, very hard.

5. The Entryway from NoReason’s Speedmaps by NoReason. This takes the cake as the most RNG level I’ve ever played. There are two ways to make a map hard, one is to design well thought out, difficult encounters, the other is trap the player in a small room with powerful enemies and no space to move. This map is in the latter category.

This is NoSp’s map 1, which usually supposed to be the easiest map, but no, this is the second hardest map in the wad. I nearly quit NoSp, after starting the wad and playing this level, but, thankfully, I decided to look, what the other levels are like, and most of them are nothing like this.

4. The Mucus Flow from Community Chest 2 by B.P.R.D. Here comes the king of resource conservation maps. Never before playing The Mucus Flow I would have considered pick off pain elementals with a chainsaw and punch out the revenant horde to be viable strats.

That kind of gameplay combined with calm music and unique atmosphere makes playing this map feel like no other.

3. Hyperborean from 100 Lines by Demonologist. Tiny map with just 100 lines, how bad could it be? Well, it can be this. Easily the biggest surprise for me in terms of difficulty this season, what I thought would be an easy breather wad after CC2, turned out to have a harder map than The Mucus Flow.

Similar to NoSp’s Entryway, it’s another fill the rooms with hard enemies and give the player almost no space to move map. This one, thankfully, requires less luck but more skill. It’s also, weirdly, not tedious to play, like one of those rage games, probably, due to it being short and having nonstop action.

It’s still not really a good map. I guess, it’s a so bad it’s good map.

2. Into Darkness from 1 Bad Wad by Spendoragon. Of all the very short and simple super hard maps, this one just takes the cake. The Citadel at least gave you lots of BFG ammo, Hyperborean at least had some health pickups, this one gives you no health and barely enough ammo. This map turns minimalism into sadism.

I was stuck on this for 3 days. Lesson of the season: simple does not equal easy.

1. The Chasm from NoReason’s Speedmaps by NoReason. Playing this map changed me as a person. The journey I had taken to beat this cured me of my laziness. Before The Chasm I was too lazy to spend more than a couple hours a day trying to achieve something, and there were many thing that I was too scared to try or thought, they would take too much effort to accomplish. By the end of my grind I spent 4 or 5 days doing nothing but trying to beat The Chasm, while only taking breaks for eating and sleeping.

After The Chasm, I went on a rampage, completing a ton of wads at a crazy pace, I also did many things that I wanted to do for years, and then I found a good job and managed to still continue to update this topic. Thank you, NoReason! Thank you for this level! It’s not the best, it’s not the hardest, but it’s the single most important level for me. And I wish for everyone to cross their chasm!

E4M8: An End to Darkness (Ultimate Doom the Way id Did) – 4

This is about as hard as a typical 90s/2000s Doom II challenge wad. I don’t think there even exists an actual The Ultimate Doom megawad as hard as this.

If this was an actual Doom II megawad it would be a contender for the title of hardest humanly beatable Doom II megawad. There are maps in short mapsets or 15-20 map wads that are harder than anything in this, but the only full megawads that might be harder than this are Tarakannik and Dark Tartarus. I don’t know much about either of those two, but Dark Tartarus seems to be super cheesable, while it’s hard to even understand, what’s going on in Tarakannik by looking at walkthroughs. There is also Chillax, but not all maps in Chillax have been beaten by humans yet.

This season was crazy. It had only 74 more maps than season 1, but the wads on average were much harder. Season 1 had one big boy, that being Alien Vendetta, season 2 had NoSp, Hell Revealed, Scythe 2, 100 Lines, Plutonia 2 and both Community Chests. I’m tired, no more hard wads for a while.

Big thanks to everyone who follows and comments on this topic! Bye!

Interestingly it looks like you never did the original Community Chest (which I just started playing recently).

Citadel at the Edge of Eternity is too much for me right now. The first Community Chest will be the last one I'll do.

Anniversary 2023 update:

- Added 4 new wads:

1. No End in Sight

2. SERENITY III aka INFINITY

3. The Lost Episodes of Doom

4. Serenity III -- Map11

- Reconsidered some of the map rankings:

The Bloodwash from Doom 2 the Way id Did goes from 3.5 to 4

Tricyclic Looper from BtSX goes from 4 to 4.5

Gates to Hell from Hell Revealed goes from 4 to 4.5

The Cleansing from Cleimos 2 goes from 4.5 to 5 and enters top 100

Wolfenstein from NoSp goes from 2 to 2.5

I was planning to do No End in Sight years ago, but always just saved it for later. It's not even that hard (besides a couple of levels), it's just super annoying to uv max due to complicated missable secrets. This is also the first time I've played a wad that reuses levels I've already beaten with no significant changes (E2M1 and E3M9 are the same as in Doom the Way id Did). I'm not going to point out every time that happens in the wad description (lots of maps that were released stand alone or in very obscure projects get reused in later wads, but this might be the only time that maps from one popular wad were reused in another).

I also finally finished the SERENITY trilogy, including Serenity III -- Map 11, which is map from scrapped Doom 2 Serenity megawad.

Also, Lost Episodes of Doom are just weird. I also couldn't get the original version to work and had to paly the unofficial ZDoom port, that added more levels.

Finally, 4.5 to The Cleansing from Cleimos 2 is probably the most inaccurate rating I've ever given. I guess, playing this right after Scythe 2 still felt like a breather, even though it's a map so thight of ammo, that you need to chainsaw hitscanners and literally count every bullet.

Spooky update:

Added 5 new wads:

1. Heretic Invades Doom

2. Orange is True Love

3. Temple of the Lizard Men 2

4. Wormwood

5. Doxylamine Moon: Overdose

Decided to update now, since I'm working on october 31st.

Wormwood was insane. Revenge of the Demon House is now the second hardest map I've beaten and the second map to get 7.5 on my scale. This is my first time taking on a serious Ribbiks map and it was scary, especially the ending that killed me 4 or 5 times. And don't even think about beating this map without coming up with strategy for and practicing every fight.

Orange is True Love is an older Ribbiks Halloween wad, that I've played because Doom Wiki lists it a part of Worwood series. It's some of the easiest of Ribbiks's stuff.

Temple of the Lizard Men 2 is a cool mod, but some levels can get very stingy with ammo.

Heretic Invades Doom is wad that I've been wanting to do for a very long time. It requires MBF21 compatibility, which almost no source port supports. I used Woof to play it, since as far as i'am aware, it's the only finished source port with MBF21 support.

Speaking of overdue, I wanted to do Doxylamine Moon even before starting the difficulty scaling topic, but somehow never got to it, until now.

Happy upcoming Halloween!

DSDA-Doom was the first source port to implement the MBF21 standard, and a fair number of source ports have followed suit:

I remember DSDA Doom having some major bugs when I was looking at it (worst being complevel 11 didn't working correctly). That was like over a year ago, so I hope, they fixed all the major issues. Still it's currently in version 0.something, isn't this means it's still in beta or something?

I've seen some youtubers using DSDA Doom lately and it has some useful features, so I'll probably switch to it later.
