Yop Posted August 23, 2023 (edited) 1K1K IS NOW OUT! THIS THREAD WILL REMAIN AS ARCHIVE OF THE PROGRESS THAT LEAD UP TO RELEASE.Ever thought maps nowadays are too expansive? Too open? Too thought out? Well this is you chance to show em how to make something COMPACT. This is 1k1k, your job is to make a doom map compressed down into a single 1000x1000 1024X1024 allowed sector, you can make rooms and all that jazz within that sector but if anything extends beyond or below that 1k limit your map will be rejected. simple really. Some added clarification on the restriction, the minimum is 1000x1000 and the maximum is 1024x1024. Teleport traps/closets are allowed if they cannot be accessed by the player without cheats, and the typical wall opening monster closets are allowed if they fit within the sector of course and Monster window dressing is allowed as long as it is inaccessible to the player much like the teleporter traps. The deadline is the end of this year [2023], and we'll be using Limit Removing Doom 2 for simplicity sake.The goal was 22 (counting the secret levels) maps, however if that isn't met by the end of the year I'll condense it down and order by difficulty. Once all 33 spaces have been taken and i will not be going over 33 maps. Quick overview of the Rules: 1. You CANNOT build outside of 1000x1000 sector (1024x1024 is the max.) 2. No Slaughter Maps please 3. Custom Textures ARE allowed, no custom objects, monsters though. No more than 10 custom textures. 4. Tools like Oblige and its variants are not allowed. 5. Custom midis are also allowed, though that's a given. 6. Since this is now open submission i will lift the limit on how many maps a person can contribute. Xaser Posted August 23, 2023 Just a heads-up, there's no reason to limit projects to exactly-32-maps anymore unless you're shooting for strict vanilla doom compatibility (which you probably shouldn't for a project like this, there's little point) -- virtually all modern ports support UMAPINFO or some equivalent, so go for that and free up the maplist to accommodate however many maps you get rather than shoot for some arbitrary target that will inevitably be missed. 10 Share this post Link to post

But one question troubles me - are monster closets allowed? hmmm, I'll say that separate teleporter closets are allowed and the typical wall opening monster closets are also allowed if they fit within the sector. Just as a clarifying question, as you've mentioned monster closets are fine, could we build areas outside of the 1000x1000 area that the player cannot reach but still contain monsters? Just asking before I go ham with it on UDB. map07 is all yours, Now then with custom textures i'd say limit it to a small amount, out of best interest for participants i'd say no more than 10 custom textures per entry. This can of course be changed if needs be, but i think it's a suitable amount while keeping future me's sanity intact when compiling and mappers happy with what they can use in the small space. 1 Share this post Link to post
