Arsinikk Posted August 29, 2023 (edited) After 8 months since the beta was used in 100 Line Christmas, the full fledged resource pack is finally here! You may ask: “why does this exist?” or “Doesn’t a Christmas resource already exist?” While the Doom Christmas resource pack does exist, I’d describe some of its assets as being subpar. When compiling a Christmas resource for my community project, I decided that the Christmas resource pack was in need of a refresh. And so here is the brand new resource pack refresh by @Arsinikk, with help from @ThatKidBobo, @Cacodemon187, and @NinjaDelphox. You can download the resource below and scroll down to see the changes included in the resource pack. For Players: Like the original Doom Christmas, you can actually load this directly with Doom / Doom 2 / TNT / Plutonia and it’ll work right out of the box. Make sure to download XMASPACK.zip and not the resource (XMASPACK-Resource.zip). It’s recommended to also load the Dehacked file (DEH) for full compatibility. Loading the resource without it will work, but some things may be wonky. For Mappers: This is a resource that is meant to be an updated version of the Doom Christmas resource that everyone uses for Christmas WADs. I really do hope that people will start to use this one instead, as it includes many fixes and refinements to the original resource pack. Make sure to download XMASPACK-Resource.zip and not XMASPACK.zip. Links: XMASPACK WAD (for players): Download XMASPACK Resource (for mappers): Download Spoiler You can see the minor tweaks and refinements to the sprites to make the resource feel less cheap. I always found the plasma in Doom Christmas to be wasted potential, so I decided to “Christmas” it up with alternating green and red projectiles and explosions! With the exception of Cyberdemon, I always found it sad that there was no Christmas replacement for the Mancubus and Archvile. For my community project, I decided to remedy this sad state and whipped up some sprites. You may notice that the Archvile’s red nose lights up when it resurrects monsters :) I also decided to redo the Cyberdemon sprites and make him look more like Candycane… compared to whatever he was supposed to be in the original resource pack. Spoiler I manually went through around 100 textures and made them seamless. It was alot of work, but it was so worth it. There were less flats to make seamless, but some of them definitely needed some love. Spoiler We ended up adding some flats that were missed in the original resource, as well as adding some new ones. Textures include some really minor additions. *Note that the FIREGRN animated will need to be added as an animated texture. It does not replace FIREBLU by default. This resource includes some custom Dehacked that you may recognise from 100 Line Christmas. The fast imps replace SS Nazis (you may recognise them from 100 and 200 Line Massacre), The keens were replaced by a swinging bell, and just for fun the brain decoration was replaced by a pacifist snow bunny. P.S. It’s really funny to play MAP31 of Doom 2 with Fast Imps instead of SS Nazis :P Spoiler One of my biggest pet peeves of the Doom Christmas resource was the Cacodemon death sound. I like that it has some glass breaking as the Caco is in the shape of an ornament… What I don’t like is that the glass breaking sfx is extremely loud in slaughter type maps, it’s really awful. So I decided to remedy this by recording an actual ornament shattering and merging that sfx with the death sound. In addition I also added an ornament shatter sfx to the Pain Elemental death as well. You can listen to difference below: Spoiler This resource includes a slightly altered version of the Doom palette, including bluer tints for the grays, a softer blue, and a goldish yellow. It’s worth noting that the resources were made and will work with the main Doom palette. Also included is a custom colourmap that has a Christmas-y invulnerability palette (shown below)! I specifically want it to be as modular as practically possible for all kinds of preference (like if someone just wants the texture realignments without all the newfangled ones, or wants the fresh new Pain Elemental sound but still likes to hear "MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! (Been a bit busy recently). I sorta like the idea of the bulbs on the chaingun, but I'm less thrilled about the execution here. Part of the reason for this "enhanced" version of the Doom Christmas resource was to better the quality of the assets. With that we also strive to keep some overall cohesion of art style to keep everything feel that it belongs together. Honestly the main reason I brought it up was to see if you and collaborators would be interested in enhancing them yourselves. However immediately after reading your response I figured I could do the work myself if I really wanted to see this chaingun in the wad Here's what I got done so far. done from-scratch modeled after C9 lightbulbs just finished the silhouette and getting the hang of GIMP. At first I was pretty satisfied with the way the middle red and was really laboring on the 2 green bulbs, but looking at it now in this size the red bulb looks pretty lumpy and the green bulbs look more proportional (ironic since they're just rotated versions of the middle, lol) I'll probably ask for help sooner or later given that I've never worked on totally original drawings since I was 6, but for now I'm just going to take a break and work on cleaning up the bulbs and start lighting Merry Christmas, everyone. Thank you! Arsinikk Just came to check the thread and there's been an update. Amazing stuff, congratulations on making this. I've played a map with this and it was really good fun. I've been making some snow textures for original Doom because I want people to be able to make maps that resemble the originals but snowy. Are there a lot of these in this pack?
