[NOW ON /IDGAMES/] TNT Goes Boom! - 32 Map Vanilla TNT Evilution Replacement

Recommended Posts

Loved the first map <3, it has the same vibes from the OG one, making your way through punches 😎.

Definitely I'm going to save the rest for the future, and I would like to do a Blind-playthrough/pseudo-review video playing this in its entirety.

10/10, I would play the first map again!

These may be reported but I'm too lazy to read through, sorry:

Map21:

-Thing 3 can be bumped easily.

-Linedef 817 has missing texture.

Map25:
-Hide Linedef 844, 1605, 1606, 1607, 2592, 2751, 2752, 2880, possibly others. These lines are shown after the Computer Area Map in case you care. (There are many other maps featuring this thing, but I'm too lazy to report.)

Map26:

-Intermission screen title is not capitalized.

Map28:

-Linedef 903 has offset texture. (It's funny though :P)

Misc:

-There are quite a handful of maps that have more than 21 LS to begin with, so PE can't really do anything in those maps.

Oh wow. I had no idea linedefs that don't touch other linedefs are still visible when computer map is picked up. They are hidden on automap by default, so this is new to me. As for PE & LS, during the playtesting (before RC1), I noticed that issue & reduced the amount of PEs in the maps, replacing them with other demons.

Many thanks for reporting these issues. I'll release RC2 soon & update the link.

Yeah, Computer Area Map is a weird thing. There's also another thing about it is that some linedefs will disappear after you reveal the grey area. I forgot what causes that, but yeah, it's a minor thing if you don't really mind it. There are other maps which have the Computer Area Map thing, but it takes too much to "fix" them completely, so I personally would say probably it's not worth it...

As a TNT enthusiast myself, I’m thoroughly enjoying playing through these maps so far.

There are definitely massive TNT influences here, not only in the visuals but also the gameplay and progression. Great job!

UV pistol starts with saves

Port: DSDA-Doom v0.25.2 -complevel 4

Total IGT: 7:20:16

Personal Difficulty Evaluation: 1.0 (1 = Plutonia)

Personal Rating: 8.5 (out of 10)

I am a big fan of homage maps for IWADs and this is a very nice one to have here. I don't remember there are too many hard sections in the whole WAD, so I just put 1.0 difficulty without thinking too much.

The best part about this WAD to me is that, you can definitely see the impressions of the original TNT maps, but on the other hand, it has enough difference for you feel refreshed. The maps have similar lengths to the original maps as well. The big dudes are Map20, 21 and 25, which are also somewhat lengthy in the original IWAD.

Overall it's a pretty fun experience from the start to the end. I think all TNT enjoyers would probably* like the WAD. (*Clearer wording since a person pointed this out for some particular reason)

Though I a bit of sadness:

Spoiler

I missed the outside hellish area on Map21 and I missed the sewer on Map22...

I think TNT sucks.

Spoiler

I absofuckinglutely loved this though. Everything about it, from jokey map titles to improving/remixing the maps' broader strokes, ugh I'm going to play this again in like a year so it's sorta-new again after I forgot about it.

If it helps out, I reviewed this on my Tumblr as has been the case with any WAD that I've beaten over the past year or thereabouts.

This doesn't help. You quoted that particular sentence from mine and I said that TNT enjoyer would like this WAD, but I didn't say vice versa, so in particular, I don't understand whether you actually think TNT sucks, and it's fine to think TNT sucks since it has many problems.

Let me put it as bluntly as I can. I am not a TNT enjoyer, and yet I loved TNT Goes Boom! for I think it references and homages the original whilst simultaneously improving on it.

So that's even weirder since I didn't say anything wrong. I didn't say anything about whoever enjoys this WAD will enjoy TNT. Probably my English is just bad and I don't know how to properly communicate with somebody.

I just get confused because that particular sentence is quoted, as if I said something wrong instead of giving a clear hint that you don't like TNT but like TNTGB while it's not the reason of that particular sentence.

Furthermore, I didn't say anything about me liking TNT, so you don't need to really tell me what you think or say it as if I liked TNT and you don't agree.

Woah, I didn't mean to put you on the defensive! I didn't take you as having said anything wrong -- I guess I was trying to say that as well as your assertion that "all TNT enjoyers will definitely like the WAD", it on some level will also appeal to people who don't like TNT: Evilution, as is the case with myself.

Sorry if my words came across as an attack or similar. Written communication can be a tricky beast sometimes, I only had good intentions with my posting.

Thank you so much for playing & thank you again for the valuable pistol start critique you gave me earlier this year.

TNT has always stuck with me way more than Plutonia ever did with its aesthetics & new music but even I could see some stinky moments from it, so that's why certain maps of mine exclude, let's say, the annoying sector dense sewer section that screwed with your movement on Map 22 or the odd progression on Map 21 the original had with poor hints at the pillars lowering with keys on them & possibly more examples. (later isn't bad if you know the map by heart but it's definitely not first-playthrough friendly)

Map 21 was a struggle for me to map as there were many ideas that I scrapped & replaced many times. The outdoor area I just couldn't get it right, no matter how many times I redesigned it & at the end, I chose to exclude it since it made map a bit more original in its design anyways.

I'm happy that you found my feedback useful :)

Totally understandable that you chose to exclude both these 2 sections. I somehow liked them in the perspective of feeling, but the gameplay of those 2 sections in TNT are definitely bad. I didn't replay the older maps since I'm lazy, but I definitely feel Episode 3 goes very smoothly. Maybe I think the BFG is too easy to get in Map22, but other than that, I don't remember anything that I want to point out.

I don't remember clearly for this one. I think it's Map25, where there's a SMM with an Arachnotron. This is one of those example that you can easily get the SMM stuck. It's a bit hilarious that you can just stand in a way to make the Arachnotron killing the SMM without trouble, heh.

I tested it & yea, it's better to remove it. SMM is now a threat.

I'd like to add that y'all have sharp eyes & are great at finding issues that I've missed. Kudos to you!

I'm glad you loved it. Thank you for playing!

You mentioned the abundance of ammo. This is the most nerve-racking thing when I balance maps for pistol-start. First few maps had ammo-starvation, as mentioned by GarrettChan in the past, so I added more ammo obviously but it's near-impossible to balance gameplay for both pistol-start & continuous, generally speaking. Another thing is that, I'd rather see player enjoy the ability to fight back against the demons efficiently at any time than to run out of ammo & run around, risking dying just to scavenge for some ammunition or use weaker weapons on high tier demons, which can be a chore.

I didn't necessarily see the abundance of ammo as a net negative; it was after all in-keeping with how Evilution did things. ;)

Any plans for a Plutonia Goes BOOM! follow-up? :P

Oh I see. My bad.

Sadly, no. haha I'm still not sure what will be my next project. I've been experimenting UDMF for the NanoWadMo 2023 a bit but I don't plan to create anything out of it, at least not for now.

Haha. Thank you for the sweet comment. <3

Sure! You can post it! Although, it might still be subject to change if folks still find anything to fix.

So, this probably might be it. I could upload this wad to idgames this Sunday unless you guys have found more issues which I doubt at this point. haha But by all means, report them if you have any.

I'm playing this megawad for the second time, it's definitely one of my favorites.
Same atmosphere as TNT Evilution but with better gameplay and level design!

A little update for those who follow this thread:

TNT Goes Boom! files have been sent to idgames staff, I have received an email to which I replied in order to confirm the files are mine & now I'm waiting for it to appear on the 'latest' section on the idgames site.

Great news, hope it all goes well. This deserves a lot more attention!
