You're not wrong. But I wouldn't consider it disingenuous. As long as John is actually answering and it's not some pre-recorded message like those shitty 900 numbers where kids conned parents into blowing 5 bucks a minute to hear "Santa" say some pre-recorded crap, then it's at least giving people what they are paying for. Ultimately, he's offering a service, and if someone's willing to pay for it (and it's not actually illegal) then that's just commerce.

No beef with Romero, but yeah this feels weird.

I was immediately reminded of the Monty Python argument sketch here, where someone pays to have a five minute argument. An equivalent exchange could run, "So are we here to discuss Doom?" "I told you once!" "No you haven't!" "Yes I have!" "When?" "Just now!" "No you didn't!" "Yes I did!", etc.

The fact that I'm being reminded of Monty Python also reflects my feeling that Romero's offer is rather unusual. I certainly wouldn't pay nearly 100 Euros to talk to someone for 15 minutes, but he may indeed have publicity/press-related reasons that I don't know about, so I don't feel in a position to judge him negatively for it.

BTW, you can also have day of deathmatch with John for €6,666.66  €4,995.95!

I'm not sure if anyone has actually bought this.

Why does Romero think he's some kind of celebrity? He hasn't made a successful game for more than 20 years, his new studio hasn't released anything other than merch and he hasn't moved on from the thing that made him popular in the first place. He's a talented level designer, but so are the best WAD mappers in this community, and they wouldn't ask a hundred for a 15 minute call.

I think that one's intended for event organizers as you're paying more then half of that price for the catering/food and location.

You're not calling Romero to DM at your house or something.

$400/hr is a little steep for a consultancy fee, but I think John's celebrity and expertise justify it. People are always trying to "corner" successful creatives.

I think most of us are better off checking out livestreams and such, but if I were an indie game dev I could see this being a great service. Plus I could then tell the public something about how John Romero gave me some insights about my game design.
