I'm not sure if it's a full community effort or just one person or a few people with separate projects but NHL '94 for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive has been updated for the past two years with current rosters.

I know that there are bootlegging groups in Latin America that make romhacks of old sports games, but with updated rosters. The whole "Ronaldinho's Soccer 64" meme came out of that phenomenon.

PES games on PS2 are still patched up to this very day

Weren't those games the last ever games that were released on the PS2? Even after Konami abandoned the wider video game industry for pachinko  - they still made those games for the PS2.

Guessing they must be profitable enough for that. Only sports game I ever played was Mutant League Football on the Megadrive, and I had *no idea* what I was doing

I'm referring to games supported by a community. I have no interest in "games as a service" crap.

Pretty sure the Sensible World of Soccer is still getting fan updates, but I haven't checked back in about 2-3 years.

D64 has got a slew of interesting romhacks as of lately. Perhaps not much to say for others, but it's interesting that even the 2020 Lost Levels are now playable on the N64 as well.

Fun fact; the guy behind the particular romhack is actually Peruvian.

Star Ocean (SNES)

Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PS1)

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PSP Remake) (This duo is a frustrasting mess; the games are a duology, but only one half ever came out in the west; the second game on PS1, and the first game on PSP. Translaters had to bring the missing half for both the original, and the remakes)

Various Shin Megami Tensei games (iirc all the SNES ones, the PS1 version of SMT1 is also translated)

Tales of Phantasia (PS1)

Tales of Destiny: Directors Cut (PS2)

Suikoden: Woven Web of the Centuries (PSP)

The two Suikoden visual novels on the PS1 have also been translated, if thats your kind of thing.

Some other things I have but have not yet played are Ys 4, which are two entirely different games on the SNES and TG16, Ys 5, the only pre-PS2 game in the series to not get a remake or rerelease, theres the SNES version of Live a Live, which was recently remade on the Switch, the SNES original version of Trials of Mana, theres the Satellaview Zelda games, and I also have Castlevania 3's Famicom version hacked with the US translation, so it has the better difficulty and music but no japanese text. Ive also got a hack for Pokemon Blue that turns it into the japanese Blue, with its exclusive changes that the west never saw, as we got their Red and Green, with blue's redone sprites.

The original Saturn and at-the-time contemporary PSX port of Baroque both recently got fan translations.  PSX Translation. Saturn Translation.

Baroque is a first-person realtime roguelike dungeon crawling game with a sparse horror aesthetic.  The PSX version is easier to run, but the Saturn version is arguably more creepy and better-looking.

Policenauts, a spiritual sequel for Snatcher.

Also I recommend playing translated Final Fantasy 4 (2 in USA) despite it really isn't a JP exclusive game.
