The ORIGINAL Baron/Hell Knight sample was found!

Recommended Posts

OLD POST:

Recently I checked the Origins of Doom Sounds page on DoomWiki.org and I noticed that they finally managed to track down the source for the Hell Knight alert/sight sound. This sound in question is "Elephant_Scream_Painful_Shriek_OCP-1110-45" from The Odyssey Collection: Creatures (here's what it sounds like).

So I downloaded it and cut and pitch shifted it a bit (I'm not a sound designer so I did the best I could).

Due to the crunchiness of the Doom sound it's not easy to tell how faithful it is, but when you compare the two you can hear that they're almost the same.

So I'm very satisfied with the results.

I made several attempts that you can hear and download here: Hell Knight Sight Sound Reconstruction [Drive link]

There's a second version indicated as "Alt" (as "alternate version"), which uses a different portion of the original sound, and another called "Extra" which is basically "HKSight" and "HKSightAlt" mixed together. Each attempt has its own clone with reverb.

What do you think about it? Please, let me know in the comments! :)

UPDATE: Two more sounds added: HKsightDIFFFFFF and HKsightDIFFFFFFandHKSight (the new sound plus the first one).

UPDATE 2:

Meanwhile, I think I also found the actual sample of the Baron of Hell death sound. I played the well known bear cub crying sound backwards and after some experiments I strongly believe that is the sound we were looking for.

I used the 4th moan for (BaronDeath and BaronUntouched) the 5th moan (BaronDth1 and BaronDth2) and I also mixed them together.

Here you go: [Download Link]

The original sample: [Listen]

UPDATE 3:

PLOTWIST!

The sound has been under our noses all along and we didn't know.

Someone found the ORIGINAL (for real this time) sample used for the Baron/Hell Knight sight sound.

Check it out:

This is such an interesting find, I didn't know this sound's origin was known. Good effort on reconstructing it!

I'll believe this is the source sound effect, kinda figured it'd be an elephant noise, but I'll be blunt and say that the reconstruction feels very far off.

I wonder if the Hell Knight sound was 'blended' with another animal sound originally? Like this is just part of it.

Maybe, it's just because of the original being heavily compressed.

Thank you! I was surprised as well as soon as I checked the sound and heard the similarities.

I also figured out that the Baron of Hell sound is the same as the Hell Knight but pitched down. There's still a difference in the second half of the Baron sound and I'm still trying to figure out how to make it sound the same.

You know, I almost believe the same. That's why I mixed my two attempts: because it seems like there's another sound in the background.

At the same, I can also agree with@Grieferus. Since the sound is too compressed, most of the detail is lost and it's hard to tell the differences from the source material.

We can just experiment and see.

I wonder if Bobby still remembers how he edited and processed the Hell Knight sound (and so the Baron of Hell alert sound).

Btw, I reversed the original sound and I think I found another possible candidate for the Hell Knight alert sound (sorry for the poor editing, I'm not on pc):

Maybe - just maybe - this sound was mixed with the first one.

Try to do the same manipulations you did with OG at first, and then with the mixed one.

It's possible. As soon as I'll come back home, I'll start to mix them on my pc with Audacity.

Sorry for the wait. It wasn't easy to do stuff during Christmas, but I managed to edit the new sound. I'll post 2 versions of it.

In the meantime, I think I discovered the origin of another Doom sound.

Sorry if it took me a while, but I've been very busy.

I followed your suggestion and made two more attempts:

HKSightDIFFFFFF: this is and edited version of the reversed sound I sent on Christmas. (Download link)

HKSightDIFFFFFFandHKSight: a mix of the first and the new sound. (Download link)

As always, let me know what you think.

Interesting.... Very interesting.

I made a recording using the Baron sample and then the Elephant sample for comparison. Here's the link

Also, interestingly, I noticed that the sound file with Baron in the frequency spectrum has a brickwall at high frequencies, i.e. the highs are cut-off sharply. But at the same time, the original sample still sounds very harsh.

I tried to apply exactly the same brickwall to the Elephant sample

Now that's interesting!

Even as an amateur (I can barely edit audio with Audacity lol), I noticed that the Baron sound was strange. It's definitely the same sound used for the Hell Knight because when you pitch shift it sounds the same for the first half.

However, the second half sounds different and highs being cut off could be the explaination (even though it still sounds different and I can't really figure out how to make it sound as faithful as possible to the Baron sound).

This is true. Hell Knight's sounds literally the same sample as Baron's, just squished :)

An interesting investigation. Thanks for sharing! I had always liked the suggestion that those sounds were a distorted sports car engine revving. Poor elephant :(

Gave it a fiddle. We're getting closer, but we're not there yet. There's a certain compression-induced intensity I'm not nearly smart enough to figure out.

I thought it was a machine or a factory alarm played backwards before. It makes sense now that it was an elephant all along.

Nice attempt!

I tried to pitch doen the audio a bit but the second half still doesn't sound right.

My only guess is that there's some sort of pitch bending going on there.

Which one of my edits did you use btw?

PS: I just noticed that some parts of this sound were used for the Fast Zombie in the HL2 beta.

@Astar I think you might find this very interesting.

It's crazy because yesterday I just casually typed "doom baron of hell sight sound" on Google and this video showed up.

So, there you go. The Baron of Hell and Hell Knight are not elephants but low pitched women.
