My first wad: Kyiv

Hello, DoomWorld community!

 

I'm excited to share with you my very first WAD creation, a project that has been a significant learning experience. Given that this is my initial foray into WAD design, please be mindful that there might be some imperfections along the way.

The WAD takes on a political theme, casting players in the role of Zelensky. Given its potentially divisive nature, I encourage discussions to focus more on the level design than the narrative. It's my hope that players of all perspectives can appreciate the design and creativity put into this project. That said, I am mentally ready to receive some hate comments, and to be honest, that's almost would be fair!

 

The key to know:

- This WAD was crafted using Slade and Ultimate Doom Builder, tools that have empowered me to bring my vision to life.

- It have been tested on GzDoom, and made for GzDoom

- As map format, I used the "GZdoom: Doom2 (Hexen Format)" - more out of ignorance than anything else

- Jumping and crouching are disabled, but if you active it, the gameplay should not change that much.

- Ultimate Doom is the IWAD I based my mod.

- The WAD features 9 levels, including a secret one. Average linear progress.

- While the iconic Doom I monsters retain their original parameters, they've been given a fresh coat of paint with new skins, fitting the thematic of the wad! Execpt the spider master mind for this version.

- no new weapons

- Few items also

- Some textures (textures with daemon faces basically have been mostly redifined)

- Some songs and visual are AI-composed.

- True to the spirit of the original Doom, this WAD does not support "crouch" or "jump" actions, it's the classic old gameplay style.

- Difficulty levels are there, but globally the difficulty in quite easy. a range of difficulty that goes from the first to the third episode of Doom I.

Is it for Doom 1 or Doom 2?   Quite a bit of missing textures...

 

I fell this is a missing texture pack.

It's for Doom1 normally.
I put a screenshot bellow how it render normally, I don't understand how it issue that way!

WADs letting you be Batman, Sailor Moon, kill Bill Gates, and so on are allowed here, too.

 

Topical as this might be as I type it, things like this are nothing new to Doom and have been around for decades.

Is this an update over this merely-graphics WAD? https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/graphics/kyiv But now with levels. Beware that the text file in your current download from moddb is not updated. It still says "no levels" for example.

 

Also, it says "advanced engine needed: none". However, when I tested with Eternity Engine (which should work, given that the implication is that it works with vanilla DOOM), the new sprites were surrounded by white or grey rectangles, like in the picture below. Is it all in "Episode 6"? I had to idclev to get there, and the music playing was just the standard "hell beneath" music.

 

I like the intermission map above but didn't yet get far enough to exit the level, due to the graphical bugs mentioned.

Yes it is an update of this old wad, I added songs, levels and so.
You right, I didn't update the text file about some stuff, like "just graphic style", I have to refresh it.
You shouldn't have had to use idclev or anything, normally I used a zmapinfo file to be able to display the entry in the new level, and tried to make a mapinfo following the same patern.
The version on idgame have not been updated yet, I just updated on moddb for the moment.
has I don't have a big experience in modding, I don't know why you have this grey things around the sprites; I will try with Eternity Engine. it's because I didn't used the correct palets or something I imagine ; If it's too complicate, will probably add some precision in the text file, but I wish to understand what is going on.
The same about the songs. I confess I used the most easiest way, just using png and mp3.

Well I don't think you have to add support for all source ports, such as Eternity. If you made this with GZDoom in mind, just say in the text file that's the advanced engine needed (pretty sure it's for GZDoom now that you mention ZMAPINFO). I usually just follow the text file's instructions so I don't have to spend too much time.

Thank you for your insightful response. I appreciate the perspective you've shared, and it's clear that focusing on compatibility with GZDoom makes the most sense for this project. Taking your advice to heart, I've updated the accompanying text file to clearly state that GZDoom is the advanced engine required for the best experience with this WAD. The updated file has been re-uploaded for everyone's convenience, on ModDB.com and also on Gamers.org in the Idgames archive (I believe it's the correct place to update the link you pointed out on this URL: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/graphics/kyiv - I hope...). I'm grateful for your feedback and hope that this clarification helps future players understand the intended setup more easily. Thank you once again for your time and constructive input.

Here in doomworld the default game iwad is DOOM2.WAD, mainly for the SSG and the extra monsters. If its for Ultimate Doom/Eviluton/Plutonia you have to point it in the description.

Thanks a lot for your feedback @URROVA, I pointed it out in the description (the right way I hope) and updated it on its website and on moddb.com.
I must admit, I'm also a huge fan of the SSG and the extra monsters that come with Doom II. However, had I chosen to design this for Doom II, it would have required significantly more time to re-skin all the monsters – though I do have some adaptation ideas for the theme. Before embarking on such a substantial task, I wanted first to submit this initial WAD and gauge its critical reception before going further.

Bet if someone posts a wad where you play as Putin this would be immediately deleted!

Genuine freedom of speech means accepting that sometimes there's points and views that you don't want to hear, but respecting the right for them to be voiced anyway. (A lesson I wish more people in the world would remember especially when they decry things as being censorship of their freedom of speech, but I digress.)

 

But there is indeed a limit. For example, don't think you'll find very many threads on Grezzo. It's more about if it's likely to offend the majority of people and have no redeeming value whatsoever, pretty much.

 

I personally don't think that a Putin WAD would rise to that level if it was similar to what this WAD is doing. The actual staff in charge might have other thoughts. After all, the other key thing to remember is that they are not a governmental entity, and therefore, the concept of "freedom of speech" does not technically exist - they are free to censor whatever speech they desire, just like you can kick anyone out of your house that you'd like. You signed up for the platform, you play by its rules.

@Dark Pulse Tx you, for your clear and thoughtful perspective. You've articulated points I couldn't have expressed better myself, especially regarding freedom of speech on private platforms and the balance between controversial content and respect for the community. Also, who is "Grezzo"?

@Li'l devil I'm curious, have you had the chance to try the WAD I shared? I apologize if it seemed to steer towards controversy – that was not my intention. Your feedback would be invaluable.

Grezzo is kind of impossible to fully explain without an extensive knowledge of Italian culture and so on, but generally speaking, it takes no-holds-barred aim at the Roman Catholic church and religion. The synopsis from Wikipedia should sum it up pretty well:

Embittered over the rise of Christianity, Piro embarks on a killing spree, with his first target being the church hosting his grandparents' silver wedding anniversary.
