ᒐack102 Posted March 8 Basically, I want to hear people's least favorite enemies, and why. I'm mainly talking about the first two games, or Final Doom if you want to talk about it too, cause placements of monsters can kind of affect likability. I'll go first: Meatballs (Yes pain elementals.) Literally the most annoying enemies in any game I've played. Imagine an enemy that spawns an annoying enemy. I guess a close second would be a Cacodemon, since they're just boring usually. Only interesting timed used is that room in "Tricks and traps." 4 Share this post Link to post
Yuki Senmatsu Posted March 8 Arch-viles bc not only they deal a ton of damage, but they also can undo the damage on the monsters. Also, there is a trick to make the Pain Elementals less of an issue by just getting close to them bc they don't have a melee attack believe it or not. Though they can still spawn Lost Souls at times 0 Share this post Link to post
TheMagicMushroomMan Posted March 8 Why do you care about what I dislike? It's not like I'm some super famous person like that guy from Insane Clown Posse or something. 7 Share this post Link to post
wasm Posted March 8 Shotgunners are pretty much a pain in the ass to deal with if they are scattered far away, same with basically any other hitscanner, they can just snipe you and you can't do anything about it, unless you have a chaingun. So I'd say my least favorite enemies are the hitscanners, I dislike them, But I also like them! 2 Share this post Link to post

Especially the Zombiemen when they're in swarms and are even more brutal on NIGHTMARE! 0 Share this post Link to post
ObserverOfTime Posted March 8 I dislike Pain Elementals with a burning passion really. If left unchecked they have the ability to completely crap up an entire area, presenting damaging and navigational hazards to the player like no other enemy does. They have to be put down ASAP, usually. If one sees me and I don't deal with it then it will create a huge mess for me to clean up, eating into precious ammo and health reserves potentially, and making the area a hazard to traverse. Bonus if the Pain Elemental appears in an area where I have to navigate ledges, narrow walkways, and so on. 0 Share this post Link to post
Maximum Matt Posted March 9 Yep, I'll go with Pain Elementals - they're too Pain Elemental-y 1 Share this post Link to post
thelamp Posted March 9 I dislike Hell Knights because they lack any unique personality. Every other monster has some quirk to make it feel interesting and special, but the Hell Knight is just a watered down Baron. Even the Baron's personality as Big Badass (read: door w/ health) is kinda flimsy and one dimensional and once you take away the tankiness there's really nothing left. Their washed out appearance also echoes that lack of personality. I'm not saying this means every encounter with them is boring or plain, mappers are pretty clever and they find clever ways to use them. I'm just saying they earned their spot at the bottom for me because they don't add anything mechanically or visually interesting to the game. 4 Share this post Link to post
Enzo Carozza Posted March 9 Both chaingunners and revenants; I zone out a bit too much, forget a few exist, and get obliterated. 1 Share this post Link to post
ivymagnapinna Posted March 9 to be honest, the Baron of Hell - most of the "asshole" enemies (Archviles, Pain Elementals, Chaingunners, etc) are they way they are because they're meant to put a lot of pressure on the player and you can do some really cool stuff with them (in an evil way, the best kind of cool), but Barons are kinda just walls with health. Not to say they're bad, or can't be used well, just more boring to fight on average. 3 Share this post Link to post
Bri Posted March 9 I don't hate them as such, but Spider mastermind's are generally useless unless their presence in the map fits specific conditions. Most monsters are reasonably flexible for any map with a bit of thought, but the Spider Mastermind needs the map, or whatever section it's in, specially catered for it to be effective. 6 Share this post Link to post
pcorf Posted March 9 Shotgunners and Chaingunners. Absolute c***ts! But you've got to use them in your maps. 4 Share this post Link to post
ChAoS PsYcHe Posted March 9 Revenants because they have a cheat code enabled and of course those damn resurrectionists... 1 Share this post Link to post
Sesamia Posted March 9 I like all of Doom's enemies, but I've always thought that lost souls were kind of boring. I like to boost their speed & damage and take away some of their health. 3 Share this post Link to post
Skronkidonk Posted March 9 I genuinely think every doom monster is amazing and each one has its place in the game. I personally think the pain elemental is amazing, it can really change a fights entire dynamic, whether you get up in its face to prevent it from releasing its minions, or you try and peekaboo shoot it so it doesn't shoot any lost souls. Anyways, I guess my least favorite enemy would be the former human, although I really like him in early levels, its kind of filler in mid to late levels. 3 Share this post Link to post
LoatharMDPhD Posted March 9 Arachnotrons in cramped spaces when you only have a rocket lawnchair and a handgun... 0 Share this post Link to post
mela_tonin Posted March 17 (edited) Pain elementals. Lost souls are a good enemy, they force you to stay mobile and prioritize them. Pain elementals ruin that by just spewing them everywhere and confusing me. Maybe I just lack brain cells. 0 Share this post Link to post
elf-alchemist Posted March 17 Barons of Hell. The most unnecessary enemy in the vanilla roster. Hell Knights are significantly more balanced, being tanky, but not evilly over the reasonable health count. They might have been a decent first boss for the early skilled player, but beyond that they are not needed. Even Pain Elementals and Archies and Chaingunners and Lost Souls have their (high difficulty or high annoyance) place, but not Barons, they serve no purpose in Doom anymore. 0 Share this post Link to post
LoserXylophone Posted March 17 I really hate the spectre's I know they are not very powerful but on the maps were they are in a a very dark place were to the point that you cant see them they can be a real pain in the ass. 1 Share this post Link to post
Terminus Posted March 17 I find Pain Elementals, as well as the specific kind of Archviles that spawn in after a long fight only to resurrect everything I worked hard to get rid of, disrespectful. 0 Share this post Link to post
MEMEAIDS Posted March 17 Its a tie between Pain Elementals and Archviles. Anything that can create a variable for which the default/intended state of a game scenario can be re-balanced AGAINST the player (and their limited resources) is nothing short of infuriating. Certainly under the right circumstances, you can completely neuter a Pain Elemental, but more often than not, you'll be dumping precious ammunition into the cavalcade of Lost Souls they managed to puke out, because you had the audacity to fail to completely stunlock it in the middle of a hectic battle. And Archviles are the same thing but worse. Can't completely obliterate them in 2 seconds? Fuck you, now you have to waste ammo on enemies you already killed. 0 Share this post Link to post
Faceman2000 Posted March 17 All of the enemies (yes, including the Baron) have a positive effect on gameplay when used well and I don’t particularly hate any of them. I am, however, constantly annoyed that the Caco has slightly too much health to be reliably two-shotted with an SSG. That’s really my biggest gripe though. 1 Share this post Link to post
Cilian Posted March 18 I don't really have any least favorite, any enemy is as good or bad as the mapper makes them 0 Share this post Link to post
stylo Posted March 18 PAIN ELEMENTALS when i heard the name i was like 'oh no' i was right. i can see their usefulness though in terms of mixing things up. i think i agree that the lost souls have a lil too much health & that barons start feeling a lil outmoded. may as well just throw some hell knights at me. most games would do the 'pallet swap = harder version of enemy', doom 2 did the opposite and maybe for the only time ever i think the pallet swap is better/more fun doom '16 (i know there's a subforum): mancubus got so boring to fight by the end. not hard anymore, just bullet spongey 1 Share this post Link to post
Cutman 999 Posted March 18 Pain elementals, mostly because I heavily dislike the dynamics they bring to the game, and how easy they're to cheese, even compared to other monsters in the game. 2 Share this post Link to post
Ichor Posted March 18 The second imp at the start of E2M3. He still owes me some money from a few years ago. 4 Share this post Link to post
GibFrag Posted March 18 The blob because it was cut from the game. I feel like instead of launching lost souls, it could’ve spawned random monsters, basically like a stationary spawn cube. 0 Share this post Link to post
