What could the "Z" in "ZDoom" stand for?

Calling GZDoom spyware is simply wrong. Spyware is software where you're not even given the choice in participating in the hardware survey. GZDoom not only gives you the choice, but also explicitly announces which releases even contain the survey code.

That's what good spyware is ought to do: Giving you the impression (and convincing you) of the possibility of choice when in reality, there isn't any.

Spoiler

I jest. I couldn't pass this one up.

As their site says, they take an absolutist view of the word spyware which basically means anything that opens a network socket beyond the primary function of the software qualifies.  Although it is strange that they don't appear to publish guidelines on what their scale means.  It is nice they have a scale though instead of treating it as a binary.

All that said, it's kind of hilarious to see GZDoom on there given how small their list of software is.  Someone involved with that site must be a user.

Don't know who wrote this, but the information definitely is not correct. As dpJudas mentioned, the telemetry is always opt-in and the versions which contain this is also announced.

I believe yes is selected by default (since most people don't read and will just accept the default) which for these kinds of people would qualify as "opt-out."

So they redefined what the word spyware means. It doesn't really fit the definition that Google or Wikipedia uses. Their description even have to add FUD to justify it by saying we could add more telemetry in the future. We could also format your disk in the next update, you know. Paranoia at its finest.

Ugh...

In all seriousness, those who are afraid of being spied upon better cancel their internet subscription right away. Even opening a harmless no-frills website spills more usable information than GZDoom's survey code.

And better bury your smartphone 6 feet deep and never ever touch one ever again. Just switching it on is a homing beacon that can track you wherever you go. And every app on a smartphone will phone home, and nothing can be done about it because unlike PCs you got no control over these things because it's all locked off deep inside the system.

But as it always is, idiots getting hung up on non-issues while completely failing to see the real problem.

It stands for ZX Spectrum, of course. The port was programmed on one and was made to run on one as well, but later on development moved to the SNES, then DOS, then Windows.

Unrelated stuff that I wanted to get off my chest because I found out about the "spyware watchdog" a while back and thought it was really funny:

some privacy oriented neocities site, I just posted this as a joke, I know spyware is a scary word to look at but it saying low is good for an average user.
https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/

This site is really funny - it gives Tor a spyware rating of Low. Not none, Low.

Why? Because it has an optional self-updater.. that uses the Tor protocol.

In general it's just fearmongering, and the site also affiliates itself with another site full of conspiracy theories.

I asked this question before as I use ZDoom.  2.3.1 to be exact.  It means ZanlDoom, Graf Zahl made these sourceports right?

GZDoom - GrafZahlDoom

A port named after that user.

Not exactly. Originally, ZDoom was made by Randi.
