A hiatus from our hiatus. Hiatusception. Grab a beer, lay down a towel, and come make some maps with us! This month’s project uses the Ray Mohawk 2 resources. Prog rock, beers and completely overpowered weapons: what’s not to love? Rock out with your BFG9002 out and slay colorful monsters across towns, caves and beaches. Channel the good vibes and make this into the Summer of Power Fantasy! Besides these amazing resources by @Doomkid, we use animated skies by @muumi plus some additional stuff by myself. Please have a playthrough of some of the Ray Mohawk 2 maps to get a feel for the weapons and monsters. We are going for happy-go-killing and chill vibes on this one: try to embrace that theme. Important: the ammo for weapon slot 5 and 6 is reversed! So slot five’s ‘cell cannon’ shares ammo with slot 7’s BFG9002. And the slot 6 flamethrower has ammo all by itself. Ray Mohawk 2 weapons and monsters explainer by Doomkid: Spoiler Ray's new arsenal is, frankly speaking, absurdly powerful. Like in the first episode, the fists are replaced with Ray's trusty knife, which does 5 times the damage of Doomguy's fists per hit, and is more than twice as fast. The chainsaw is replaced with the gauntlets from Heretic, but super souped up. They're twice the speed of the normal saw, meaning they do twice the damage in total. The pistol deals 7 times more damage per shot than the vanilla pistol, making it one of the most beefy starter weapons you'll find in a Doom wad. It's faster as well! The shotgun is roughly 3 times tougher than it's unmodified counterpart, firing 20 pellets rather than 7 per blast. It takes two shells per shot rather than one, but it deals enough of a wallop to be worth it. The auto-shotgun replaces the SSG. It's an upgrade for the shotgun that makes it, well, automatic! When it comes to clearing a path through hellspawn, this weapon is like a hot knife through butter. The chaingun is replaced by a cool futuristic blaster. If you love the chaingun but have just been wishing for a version with about 7 times the killing power, this is the gun for you. (You also don't have to shoot it twice every time you fire.) The plasma rifle is replaced with a flamethrower! Those of you familiar with the Rowdy Rudy wads have probably been wanting to use that sweet flamethrower after being on the receiving end, and now you can! To put this beast's power into perspective, each flame does 3 times as much damage as a standard plasma ball. The only minor drawback is that it has a somewhat limited range of about 900 pixels. The rocket launcher is replaced with the cell cannon. It fires explosive plasma balls very rapidly that are this mod's equivalent of rockets, but since it uses cell ammo, your maximum ammo is much higher, meaning you can blow away a whole lot more baddies. The BFG9000 has been upgraded to the BFG9002 (Nine-thousand and two). It only needs 25 cells to produce a blast that took 40 for the old BFG, it emits two waves of tracers rather than just one, and it fires much faster. This gun's killing power is simply off the charts. NEW MONSTERS: Most of the enemies are only changed visually, having a bit more of a beachy, sunshiney feel. The only substantive changes are as follows: Commander Keen is now replaced by an actual enemy - Slyor, who has a cannon that shoots a volley of flames followed by 3 imp fireballs in quick succession. He has 250 health points (half the strength of a Hell Knight). I gave the Wolfenstein SS soldiers a new look lifted from Kick Attack!, making them viable fodder in between a shotgunner a chaingunner. Finally, the Cyberdemon has been modified to fire in volleys of 6 rather than 3, just to make him a touch deadlier than usual. It's only fair considering the player's firepower! I bleached him to help signify that he's not your typical Cybie. Get the resources here. Changelog: Version 3 on the 16th of July 2024: added posters, fixed some animated stuff like the Saw and the Fan textures. Version 2 on the 5th of July 2024: added three more animated skies, credits file and some other textures. (texture PMQRCODE is off limits, let me know if you want a custom texture yourself) It’s been over a year since Ray literally blew his way out of a demon’s ass (those who played Ray Mohawk 2 know this is cannon -ed) and saved the world, again. When he returned to Japan to help rebuild society he hoped this time the peace and quiet would last. But alas: the demons seem to have returned in ever greater numbers. Again. Join Ray as he dashes around the globe trying to cool down the fires of this sweltering summer. Let’s see if Ray can save the world before he passes out from all the beers he’ll inevitably end up drinking. Each mapper has until the 31th of July 11:59 PM PDT to submit their map in the related discord channel or in this thread. No other time limits this project. DOOM 2 IWAD, MBF21 compatibility. Your map has to run well in the latest versions of both DSDA and GZDoom. It has to look well in both hardware and software mode. Jumping and crouching are not allowed. Mouselook is optional, but maps need to be beatable without mouselook! Co-op starts and difficulty settings are mandatory. Avoid softlocks on co-op. And just throwing in some extra cybers on co-op is not as much fun as adding 100 extra imps and some extra rockets, health and armor for the multiplayer crowd: please give them some extra stuff as well if you can ;)! In this project the maps will not be too difficult. Embrace the power fantasy that these resources give you without making something that is harder than Valiant episode 1. We encourage mappers to not make maps that are too long. We are not giving a maximum size or monster limit this time. But we encourage people to make small maps. You must use the resources provided. You must use a custom MIDI. Make sure your MIDI does not trigger copyright stuff on things like YouTube and Twitch! Choose something that fits with the theme of the project! You must make a custom band poster and include it in your map. If you have trouble making one ask me for help. Remember to have the poster be 64 units wide! You are free to put the existing band posters from the texture pack in your map alongside your own, of course. Tip: increase the saturation on the poster before repaletting in Slade if your colors turn gray. You must use one of the provided animated skies. (there are four right now in the pack, a few more will be added in the coming weeks. The aligment on some will be tweaked) Animated skies don’t work when defined in UMAPINFO, so you will need to do a sky transfer in your map using line action 271. Max 2 maps per person for this event. (contact me if you have finished two and want to make more: we’ll see on a case by case basis) Any bug fixing/map changes are due to me 1 week after we upload the final playthrough video of the last submission. If needed I will make minor adjustments (aligning, placing co-op starts, bug fixes, balancing etc.) though I will first ask you of course, and will only adjust something reluctantly. No low effort maps please. Try to make something really nice! We will playtest and give you feedback, and expect that any advice will really be taken into account. Egregor Posted July 3 Oh boy, a new PUSS CP! After such a long hiatus (since December) this is a real treat. And with a custom MOD baked into the assets and animated skies, oh hell yeah! I've actually already started my speed-map. After one session layout and texturing is nearly complete. I'm embracing the Ray Mohawk vibe for this one so I set the grid to 128, which I rarely do. I did have trouble getting my custom Mahavishnu Orchestra poster to work correctly. It showed up in UDB and Slade, but in DSDA I got error "sky3 is missing" and in GZDoom it just wouldn't appear. The poster is placed in the bottom right corner of sector 735. I don't get it... anyways here is a .png of the texture (palleted for Doom), maybe it'll work for you? Thanks! The first few animated skies didn't fit the map. Never got around to switching it.) Format: MBF21 Difficulty Settings: Not yet set. Will fix this later. Extra co-op stuff: Same as above, kinda. There were places where I felt I added too many enemies, but rather than delete them I set them to Multiplayer only. As with difficulty settings I will probably revamp this at some point. Build Time: Don't ask me that question. Comments: Ray takes a walk through a volcano. Because reasons. I went an embarrassingly long amount of time into building this level before remembering that vanilla Doom II (and by extension, Ray Mohawk) doesn't have a lavafall texture. Whoopsie. Anyway, I used another texture to simulate the effect. It's fine. It works. The rules say that in spite of the unlimited design time, mappers shouldn't make levels that are too long, and since I'm bad at both reading comprehension and planning (see: the lavafall situation above) I didn't do that. It probably would have been a good idea if I had, but this map is yet another 15-20 minute job, and more if you get lost. Sorry about that. I had a tough time (like always) gauging the difficulty for this map. Since it's Ray Mohawk, I knew going in that big groups of enemies was A-OK and in fact recommended, but I still wound up with situations where I felt it went above that "first Episode of Valiant" threshold (Although it's been a while since I played Valiant, so my memory might be unreliable. I recall it being pretty tough, though). I toned those encounters down, so it's better. Kind of. I mean, in either sense the combat isn't great, but to me, this seems better. I suppose that I should mention the music poster I added. It's the album cover for "Out of the Blue" by Electric Light Orchestra. Not sure if they count as prog rock, but I'm also not sure if I know what constitutes prog rock in the first place (Wikipedia has only slightly illuminated me here). I chose it mainly because it's one of those formulative childhood things. I think my dad must have owned the album at some point. The same with MAP18: it needs to be loaded separately with PUSS XXXIV resources as well at the moment. Will be merged for RC1. Apologies for the inconvenience. If you haven't submitted a poster yet: please do so soon! Known bug: some custom posters have become a rock textures. I am baffled. No idea how they got a rock patch. Will fix for RC1.
