Yeah, besides just bs'ing in the lobby etc, it's a good way to collaborate on new projects and stuff. ;)

It works pretty well to test your projects on several random source engines too.

@Mr.Rocket great stuff, just one caveat tho. I think a crucial thing that's missing from DC right now is the ability to independently determine IWAD/DOSBox paths. For example, I have my Doom installations from GOG, which stores DOSBox in a subdirectory separate from doom/2.exe, ipxsetup.exe, etc. I have a similar setup for my IWADs in relation to source ports. I know for a fact that this CAN work, because I've used this setup for source ports with ZDL, Doomseeker, and zLauncher numerous times in the past. If the user has to reconfigure their entire setup of IWADs, DOSBox, and source ports, that's detracting from the overall user experience.

Yeah when I made Doom and Doom2IPX, I had it setup so the IWAD and pwads would run from the working directory(only).

This is how Doom and Doom2 is setup as well as its IPXSETUP.exe. Because of this, is why I implemented it like that.

(DosBox.exe and its 2 accompanied dlls) just need to be in your original Doom or Doom2 working directory for everything to work.

Besides the obvious, the important thing to do at the time was to make it easy to setup a network game.

Actually, you can run PWADs from subdirectories as well. I usually do this almost every day:

doom2.exe -file .\wads\pwad.wad

ALSO, DOSBox has a feature called overlay where you can essentially overlay one directory over another, so the contents register as being in the same directory in DOSBox. GOG uses this for cloud saves, which is where I typically keep my PWADs, and that works with loading them 100% fine.

I'll take it in mind, there's still room to redesign its support in Doom Connector, if need be. ;)

Basically all you need is this though:

doom2_on_dc.png.22140c00834969407ac074db93512738.png

It would be nice to have it so the Pwads could be loaded from a different location, even though Doom or Doom2 won't load anything more than 8 characters. It sort of makes sense to have vanilla only pwads in the original Doom directories though, however.

I'll look into it. ;)

P.s. at the time, I designed it around original Doom and Doom2's file structure, I had the Steam version too and made it so it works with Steam that way as well. I don't have the GOG version, but if DosBox is in the actual game directory, then there wouldn't be any problem there.

@OpenRift, could you send me your DosBox config and I'll have a look at it tonight?

~ and if there's any other configs it may create.

Thanks

Sent you a DM, should give you a better understanding of what I'm talking about.

From the looks of it, the use of -t overlay isn't much useful to me as the pwads would still need to be stored in the working directory.

Even if it's several subdirectories deep, they will still need to be in this working location.

As for "detracting from the overall user experience"? Really?

Adding DosBox.exe and its 2 accompanied dlls to your Doom or Doom2 location isn't going to distract anyone.

In fact, it seems that GOG should have had a better way of setting up the game when DosBox isn't in the same directory, as like the Steam version is.

That seems more distracting than having to place 3 files in your Doom or Doom2 directory, heh.

It's rather simple when you only have to do the procedure once. ;)

I mean really, I could make an installer so the DosBox files will be there prior to setting up the game, if that helps?

Best solution would for user to manually create symbolic links. Not very user friendly though.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

I'm in the middle of working on the old client version2, DC2.

If you remember:

I already have it compatible with the newer server.

I'm doing this so users will have the option of using the new or old client if wanted.

And I'm also thinking of having DosBox as a part of the installation for Doom and Doom2 IPX games.

Let me know your thoughts, thanks!

Most likely. Between Doom Explorer and Discord, everything DC did has been usurped by other applications for years now. I'll always have nostalgia for it, it was my first window into multiplayer Doom online, but sometimes it's best to let sleeping dogs lie.

EDIT: looks like it's still up after all

Actually Dagger has it hosted and has for about a year now.

Yep the site is down though, we're working on that.. :\

In the mean time I fixed up an older DC version which uses MAME/CSUME as the primary game engine for ROM games.

This version isn't Doom related however, and is called Arcade Connector, which can be found here:
